HOT DRINKS MACHINES, CLIMATE CHANGE AND COFFEE. | KSV ...

February 4th, 2013

We are constantly being warned of the implications of possible Climate Change on our environment, with hardly a day passing without some reference in the MSM to either a new example of long term ice melt or more extreme weather somewhere in the world. Perhaps second only to Climate is the attention given by newspapers in particular to the various potential health benefits surrounding many of the natural food and drinks we consume.? Red wine is great for this or bad for that, drink tea to enjoy protection from various ailments, but risking something else. Eat more meat, eat less meat, drink loads of coffee for this benefit or just a little coffee to protect from something else!? Perhaps everything in moderation is the key!

What is being raised as a major concern by the head of coffee research at the Royal Botanical Gardens? is that any significant change in climate poses a real threat to the Arabica coffee plant. Although the world wide coffee market is huge, in fact second only to oil in traded values, and coffee is now produced in over 70 countries producing exports in excess of ?10 Billion annually there are sustainability worries for the future. Almost three quarters of coffee produced is from Arabica beans, taken from cultivated stock all of which relate back to wild plants restricted to relatively small areas of Ethiopia and Sudan. Climate modelling is indicating that weather and habitat changes could potentially destroy all wild Arabica plants in only 70 years and without the original wild stock to fall back on in the event of any future disease or pest problem in cultivated stock then this could in the worst case result in a caffeine free society!

With Climate Change being predominately blamed on excessive energy use and carbon emissions it struck me there is a small but significant contribution we can make by using a hot drinks machine from KSV! Many of the vending machines in our comprehensive range have significant energy saving improvements compared with equipment produced just a few years ago. The Flavia Creation 400 drinks system for example has class leading energy saving features which in some small way may just save our climate, save our planet and save the coffee supply we enjoy drinking from it!
