NEW YORK (AP) ? Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who led the newspaper to new levels of influence and profit while standing up for press freedom during some of the most significant moments in 20th-century journalism, died Saturday. He was 86.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch" and served with the Marine Corps before joining the Times staff, first as a reporter, and then following his father and grandfather as publisher, died at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness, his family announced.

During his three-decade tenure, the newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes, published the Pentagon Papers and won a libel case victory in New York Times vs. Sullivan that established important First Amendment protections for the press.

"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press," his son, and current Times publisher, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., said in a statement. He said his father's refusal to back down in the paper's free-speech battles "helped to expand access to critical information and to prevent government censorship and intimidation."

In an era of declining newspaper readership, the Times' weekday circulation climbed from 714,000 when Sulzberger became publisher in 1963 to 1.1 million upon his retirement as publisher in 1992. Over the same period, the annual revenues of the Times' corporate parent rose from $100 million to $1.7 billion.

"Above all, he took the quality of the product up to an entirely new level," the late Katharine Graham, chairwoman of The Washington Post Co., said at the time Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's title.

Sulzberger was the only grandson of Adolph S. Ochs (pronounced ox), the son of Bavarian immigrants who took over the Times in 1896 and built it into the nation's most influential newspaper.

The family retains control to this day, holding a special class of shares that give them more powerful voting rights than other stockholders.

Power was thrust on Sulzberger at the age of 37 after the sudden death of his brother-in-law in 1963. He had been in the Times executive suite for eight years in a role he later described as "vice president in charge of nothing."

But Sulzberger directed the Times' evolution from an encyclopedic paper of record to a more reader-friendly product that reached into the suburbs and across the nation.

During his tenure, the Times started a national edition, bought its first color presses, and introduced ? to the chagrin of some hard-news purists ? popular and lucrative new sections covering topics such as food and entertainment.

"If you weren't around then, you forget the unbelievable outrage that greeted those sections. But in retrospect it was the right decision both editorially and economically," said Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Sulzberger also improved the paper's bottom line, pulling it and its parent company out of a tailspin in the mid-1970s and lifting both to unprecedented profitability a decade later.

In 1992, Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's job to his 40-year-old son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., but remained chairman of The New York Times Co. Sulzberger retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997. His son then was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

Reacting to news of Sulzberger's death Saturday, former Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld said that his business success was matched by integrity in the newsroom.

"As an editor, you knew that if you went to the publisher and sought his support on an issue that you deemed to be of high importance, you could pretty much count on getting it. He knew how to back his people," Lelyveld said. "The last years have been extremely difficult with his health problems. He bore them with great courage. I admired him hugely."

President Barack Obama said Sulzberger was "a firm believer in the importance of a free and independent press ? one that isn't afraid to seek the truth, hold those in power accountable, and tell the stories that need to be told."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he "changed the course of American history with his journalistic decisions."

Significant free-press and free-speech precedents were established during Sulzberger's years as publisher, most notably the Times vs. Sullivan case. It resulted in a landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that shielded the press from libel lawsuits by public officials unless they could prove actual malice.

In 1971 the Times led the First Amendment fight to keep the government from suppressing the Pentagon Papers, a series of classified reports on the Vietnam War. Asked by a reporter who at the Times made the decision to publish the papers, Sulzberger gestured toward his chest and silently mouthed, "me."

Sulzberger read the more than 7,000 pages of the Pentagon Papers before deciding to publish them. After Sulzberger read the papers, he was asked what he thought. "Oh, I would think about 20 years to life," he responded.

But in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court eventually sided with the Times and The Washington Post, which had begun publishing the papers a few days after the Times.

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt. "The Associated Press benefited from his wisdom, both during his years on the board of directors and his thoughtful engagement in the years that followed."

Gay Talese, who worked at the Times as a reporter when Sulzberger took over and chronicled the paper's history in his book "The Kingdom and the Power," called him "a brilliant publisher. He far exceeded the achievements of his father in both making the paper better and more profitable at a time when papers are not as good as they used to be."

In their book "The Trust," a history of the Ochs-Sulzberger family and its stewardship of the paper, Susan E. Tifft and Alex S. Jones cited Sulzberger's "common sense and unerring instincts."

In an interview in 1990 with New York magazine, Sulzberger was typically candid about the paper's readership.

"We're not New York's hometown newspaper," he said. "We're read on Park Avenue, but we don't do well in Chinatown or the east Bronx. We have to approach journalism differently than, say, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, where you try to blanket the community."

New York City's mayor from 1978 to 1989, Ed Koch, said Sulzberger also had great humility, despite his extraordinary influence.

"With enormous power and authority he was a humble a person as you could ever meet," Koch said Saturday. "People with enormous power often dominate a room. He did not. And yet the power and authority was there."

In the mid-1980s Sulzberger authorized the building of a $450 million color printing and distribution plant across the Hudson River in Edison, N.J., part of a plan to get all printing out of cramped facilities in the Times building in Manhattan.

Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926, the only son of Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his wife, Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, Adolph's only child. One of his three sisters was named Judy, and from early on he was known as "Punch," from the puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Sulzberger's grandfather led the paper until his death in 1935, when he was followed by Sulzberger's father, who remained at the helm until he retired in 1961.

Meanwhile, Arthur served in the Marines during World War II and, briefly, in Korea. He later observed, in a typically self-deprecating remark, that "My family didn't worry about me for a minute. They knew that if I got shot in the head it wouldn't do any harm."

Except for a year at The Milwaukee Journal, 1953-54, the younger Sulzberger spent his entire career at the family paper. He joined after graduating from Columbia College in 1951. He worked in European bureaus for a time and was back in New York by 1955, but found he had little to do.

Sulzberger had not been expected to assume power at the paper for years. His father passed control to Orvil E. Dryfoos, his oldest daughter's husband, in 1961. But two years later Dryfoos died suddenly of heart disease at 50. Punch Sulzberger's parents named him publisher, the fourth family member to hold the title.

"We had all hoped that Punch would have many years more training before having to take over," said his mother, Iphigene. Sulzberger relied on senior editors and managers for advice, and quickly developed a reputation as a solid leader.

At various times, Sulzberger was a director or chairman of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, American Newspaper Publishers Association and American Press Institute. He was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1984.

Sulzberger married Barbara Grant in 1948, and the couple had two children, Arthur Jr. and Karen. After a divorce in 1956, Sulzberger married Carol Fox. The couple had a daughter, Cynthia, and Sulzberger adopted Fox's daughter from a previous marriage, Cathy.

Carol Sulzberger died in 1995. The following year, Sulzberger married Allison Cowles, the widow of William H. Cowles 3rd, who was the president and publisher of The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle of Spokane, Wash. She died in 2010.

Cops: 5 dead in Minneapolis workplace shooting

As police search for a motive in a deadly Minnesota workplace shooting, witnesses say the gunman may have been fired from his job at a small signage company earlier in the day. ?Four people and the gunman were killed, and four others were injured. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

By NBC News staff, KARE 11 and wire reports

Updated at 8:02 a.m. ET: MINNEAPOLIS -?A gunman killed four people inside a Minneapolis sign-making business before turning the weapon on himself, authorities said early Friday.

The victims' bodies were found shortly after officers arrived at Accent Signage Systems Inc., located in a residential area in the city's north side, after receiving a 911 call Thursday afternoon, according to police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty.

"When officers arrived and entered the business to assist with the evacuation of employees, give aid to the victims and to search for the suspect, they found four victims dead from apparent gunshot wounds," McCarty said in a statement.

Four other people were wounded, including three critically. McCarty?declined to identify those killed or wounded, and said he did not know what connection the shooter may have had with the business, if any.

'Kind of odd'
Minneapolis Police Deputy Chief Kris Arneson said officers never fired at the shooter. She didn't release other details ? including the shooter's possible motive.

Neighbor Heather Buckingham, who told NBC station KARE 11 that she formerly worked for Accent Signage Systems as a receptionist, said the gunman was an employee of the firm who had been laid off on Thursday.

Police continue to investigate a shooting in Minneapolis that left "several" dead and four injured. KARE's Jay Olstad reports.

"The one that was doing the shooting was quiet, kept to himself," she told KARE 11. ?"Kind of odd."

Someone from inside the building called 911 around 4:30 p.m. to report the shootings, police said. The first officers on the scene quickly began evacuating people from the business and closed off several blocks.

More news from NBC station KARE 11

Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building down the street having his high school senior pictures taken when he and his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.

"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off running to our vehicles."

'Watched his boss get shot'
Local resident Barb Gasterland told KARE 11 that an employee of Accent Signage Systems came to her home looking for help.

"He was visibly fearful," she said. "He came running up the side of the road and asked for the phone because he was running from the shooter."

Gasterland said the man described the details of the shooting while hiding in her house for about 30 minutes.

"He had watched his boss get shot and his best friend and two other people," she told KARE 11. "He could tell one person was dead at least."

Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak described the incident as a "horrible tragedy."

Officers with the Minnesota State Patrol man the Penn Avenue bridge over Bassett's Creek near the scene of a shooting in Minneapolis on Thursday.

In a statement, Governor Mark Dayton said: "I deplore this senseless violence. There is no place for it anywhere in Minnesota. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the innocent people killed or wounded."

Local business publication Finance & Commerce reported that U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco Sanchez visited Accent Signage Systems in August in a trip focused on exporting, and praised the company for its innovation.

KARE 11 reported:

Accent Signage Systems Incorporated specializes in interior signs that help the visually impaired.

The company holds a patent for technology that imprints Braille on things like hotel room numbers and restroom signs.

Companies in 38 countries use Accent's technology.

According to the company's Facebook page, Accent started as a part-time engraving business out of company president Reuven Rahamim's basement in 1984. It has grown significantly.

Accent now employs about 30 people and earns $5 to $10 million each year.

Showcase Art to Brighten Your Home for Staging or Living | Zillow Blog

Interior designers often are surprised that few homeowners actually paint their walls or hang art on them.

While choosing art is a highly subjective ? and sometimes intimidating ? process, you can find inspiration on websites, at galleries or art festivals and in objects that you encounter every day.

Here are a few tips for using art in your home.

Play it up BIG!

Don?t be afraid of large art, even in small spaces. Many times, one great piece can really fill up a space nicely. In the model home photo above, the large piece of art on the right is almost the same width as the sofa and takes up most of the wall, helping fill in the room. Look for large canvas pieces for art that is larger than 30 inches wide to help cut down on the weight of the piece and make it much easier to hang.

Create a collage

Still nervous about large art? Can?t decide on one piece to showcase? Try using smaller pieces in a big way to create a wall collage. Even though you?re using a few pieces of art, it will read like one piece. This is great for art that is between 8 and 30 inches wide. Use an odd number of pieces and hang the set behind a sofa, above a console table or buffet or even over your bed. Incorporate a variety of textures?? art on canvas, framed art, colored glass and even mirrors ? to brighten the space. If you have art smaller than 8 inches wide, frame it in a wide frame or 3- to 4-inch mat to make it appear larger.

If it?s small, it?s NOT for the wall

Any framed art or photo that is smaller than 8 inches wide should not be hung on a wall. Instead, use these pieces on any shelf?? mantle, bookshelf, buffet or nightstand.

Hanging rules of thumb

Hang art so that the middle of the piece (or collage) is approximately 5 feet from the floor. Hanging art on a wall with wainscoting may require it to be a little higher, but try to stay within that range. When hanging a large piece of art behind a sofa, hang it high enough for heads to clear once people are seated.

Don?t be afraid of art; it can really help you bring life to your space ? for living and for staging.

5 Reasons Why You Need to Build Your List : CB Virtual Services

Internet marketing on a successful level includes list building when it comes to your site visitors and customers. Putting this contact list together is important for several reasons.

The first and most obvious reason is to stay in touch with your clients. Follow-up is the biggest component of future sales and it lets you customize your products and services more effectively.

Secondly, it lets you send them future offers that were not offered to them during the original sale. These could be accessory products to their original purchase, or a service that fits the same category. If you work as an affiliate marketer as well, this is a built-in audience for those offers.

Third, it gives you more opportunity in terms of partnering with other internet marketers. Sharing the power of your list with someone else is a service you can get paid for. Certain companies will pay for the right to have their information emailed to your list in order to increase site traffic and purchases.

The fourth consideration for list building is to reward clients and customers during sharing contests. They can each have a referral number, based on name or customer ID, and can be tracked in your records. By using a list like this, it gives you a way to track who is most effective during social campaigns and who sends traffic more often.

Finally, if you don?t build a list, you are throwing money and time away. Internet marketing is about creating an online presence that lasts. Without a list, you may make contact with several thousand people but have no way to reach them again. Depending on their memory to come back and see you is ineffective. Instead, use technology to build a contact list that creates future profits in several forms.Email Marketing

Sweden's H&M says Q3 dented by late summer heat

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz announced Thursday plans to ramp up its expansion in the coming months, even though problems associated with Europe's debt crisis and a heat wave in a number of its key markets capped earnings in the third quarter.

The Stockholm-headquartered group posted a net profit of 3.6 billion kronor ($549 million) in the three months between June and August, up just under 1 percent from 3.59 billion kronor in the year-ago period. Revenues rose to 33.57 billion kronor from 31.51 billion kronor.

The group said its performance was dented by economic difficulties in many European countries, a late-summer heat wave in much of Europe as well as currency fluctuations. However, some relief was provided by cheaper cotton prices.

"Conditions for the fashion retail industry continued to be challenging in many markets in the third quarter ? both as regards the weather and the macroeconomic climate, with austerity measures and restrained consumption," CEO Karl-Johan Persson said, adding that lower than expected sales could "primarily" be blamed on the heat wave.

The company's share price dropped almost 4 percent to 236.70 kronor ($35.89) in early trading on the Stockholm stock exchange.

Even so, the group said it continues to grab market share and revealed plans to open 300 new stores this year, up from a previously forecast 275.

It also said it plans to launch a new fashion brand, & Other Stories, in the first half of next year, which will be located in separate stores. The clothes will focus more on quality and will be higher priced than its normal fashion lines.

Daniel Ovin, an analyst at CAI Cheuvreux Nordic in Stockholm, said H&M's third quarter performance was a "disappointment," especially with regard to the fall in the company's gross margin to 58.2 percent from 58.6 percent.

"I would have thought that the lower cotton prices would have helped there," he said.

Libya Attack Not Just 'Mob Action,' Obama Says

Asked today by the hosts of ABC's "The View" if the deadly assault on the US consulate in Benghazi was a "terrorist attack," President Obama said that "there is no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the on-going assault, that it wasn't just a mob action."

The administration, which is still investigating the attack that killed four Americans, including US Ambassador Chris Stevens, has previously said that, based on what they knew so far, the assault was linked to broader protests fueled by an anti-Islam movie.

"We don't have all the information yet and so we're still gathering it," the president said. "But what's clear is around the world there's still a lot of threat out there. That's why we have to maintain the strongest military in the world, that's why we can't let down our guard when it comes to the intelligence work that we do and staying on top of-not just Al Qaeda? but all these various fringe groups that have started to develop." While the "overwhelming majority of Muslims they want the same things that families here want," the president said, "there are extremist frames that are there and these countries are still going through transition."

"They don't have strong institutions? they don't have a strong police force, a strong military and in that vacuum what you start seeing is these extremists trying to take advantage," Obama explained. The president said the US is not going to "shrink back from the world" because of this attack and the growing unrest in the Muslim world, a message he is expected to convey in his remarks before the United Nations General Assembly tomorrow.

"We are going to hunt down those who did this," he said of the attackers. "We will bring them to justice. We will make sure that we do everything we have to do to protect our embassies and our diplomatic posts, but we're going to stay engaged."

The president and first lady's interview on "The View" airs Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST on ABC.

Researchers solve puzzle of B-cell lymphoma development

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Germinal centers are sites in the organs of the lymphatic system, formed during the course of an immune response to infection, where B cells intensely proliferate and modify their DNA in order to produce antibodies specific for the pathogen. However, it is known that the vast majority of lymphomas derive from the B cells at the germinal centers. Now, Dr. Dinis Pedro Calado and Dr. Klaus Rajewsky of the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch have identified subgroups of B cells in germinal centers in which the proto-oncogene Myc, a critical regulator of cellular proliferation, is highly activated. They showed in addition that the Myc gene in these subpopulations is essential for the formation and maintenance of the germinal centers.

Their findings, published in Nature Immunology, also shed light on the origin of B-cell lymphomas derived from B cells at the germinal center reaction.

The Myc gene is a key regulator of cellular proliferation and is frequently involved in chromosomal translocations in human lymphomas derived from B cells at the germinal center reaction. Such translocations, seen in roughly 10 percent of diffuse large B-cell lymphomas and almost all cases of sporadic Burkitt lymphoma, juxtapose Myc and enhancers in immunoglobulin loci, leading to deregulated Myc expression.

These observations have puzzled researchers for many years because translocations of this gene can only take place in those cells where Myc is active. "However, Myc is thought not to be expressed in B cells at the germinal center reaction, the progenitors of most B-cell lymphomas," Dr. Rajewsky said. So the question was: if B cells at the germinal center reaction do not express Myc, how can they give rise to B cell lymphomas carrying Myc translocations?

Germinal centers are located in the lymphatic organs such as the spleen, lymph nodes and Peyer's patches in the intestinal wall. In the germinal centers the B cells are confronted with antigens and quickly proliferate. For the immune system to be able to cope with the huge variety of antigens, B cells must modify their DNA through mutation (somatic hypermutation) and recombination (class-switch recombination). However, the fast proliferation together with the ongoing DNA modifications may increase the occurrence of errors, which makes the malignant transformation of B cells at the germinal center reaction probable. "B-cell lymphomas are the most common type of human lymphoid malignancies. They mostly originate either from B cells at the germinal center reaction or from B cells that have passed through the germinal center reaction," Dr. Calado and Dr. Rajewsky pointed out.

What then is the role of the Myc gene? How can Myc be highly activated through translocations in B-cell lymphomas although it is not active in healthy B cells of the germinal center reaction? Dr. Calado and Dr. Rajewsky have now found an answer to this question. They identified subpopulations of B cells located in the germinal centers in which the Myc gene is activated. They also showed that c-Myc is essential for the formation and maintenance of the germinal centers. When they knocked out the Mycgene in B cells they could show that germinal centers could not be formed or maintained.

"The MYC-positive germinal center B-cell subpopulations are probably at high risk for malignant transformation. Our work has direct implications for the understanding of the pathogenesis of human germinal center-derived B-cell lymphomas carrying MYC chromosomal translocations and therefore can contribute to a better understanding of how these lymphomas occur," Dr. Calado and Dr. Rajewsky said.

Women's fitness ? Should women lift weights :- Health Medical ...

?

Do you want to lose weight , flatten abs, tighten your butt, firm your legs build your chest and tone your arms without looking like a man? Will strength training make you look too bulky? How do you do it? Is there such thing as a man?s workout? I know there are a lot of men who focus on the obvious body parts such as arms, back and chest and maybe a little legs. I admit that is not a woman?s style workout. But what about the men who do total body from head to toe? Should a woman do that type of workout? The answer to that question is YES. Men naturally have bigger muscles than women which means we can burn more calories than women at a much faster rate. We also carry less body fat.

But does that mean a women should go crazy and just focus on cardio, and only cardio with maybe a little weight training? The biggest myth that I have heard are women who believe that if they Lift heavy weights (strength training) they will get monster muscles like a guy. Ladies I am here to prove you wrong. Weight training is one of the best type or exercise to involve in your program. I am not talking about lifting some little 5lb. Weights. I am talking about heavy weight lifting that makes you want to scream for mercy and slap the person next to you for no reason. I know you want to have a nice tight butt and a wicked set of arms with the sexiest stomach on earth. [right?] Well how do you get it? Do you really think you can get that type of body from just using a treadmill or elliptical ?

Taoiseach meets with Pope in Rome

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has met with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

The Fine Gael leader's meeting with the Pontiff is his first since he castigated the Vatican for its inaction in dealing with the issue of child abuse in Ireland.

He is in Rome as part of a two-day meeting of the Centrist Democrats International group hosted by the Italian leader, Mario Monti.

The group is affiliated with the European People's Party, of which Fine Gael is a member.

Mr Kenny was among a group of European political leaders who met Pope Benedict at his residence at Castel Gandolfo.

Last July in the Dail the Taoiseach launched an unprecedented attack on the Vatican, accusing Catholic hierarchy of putting the Church ahead of child rape victims.

In a damning assessment of Rome's attitude to paedophile priests, Mr Kenny said investigations into the cover-up of clerical abuse had exposed a dysfunctional, elite hierarchy determined to frustrate investigations.

He also warned the Holy See that religion did not rule Ireland.

Old mansion gives glimpse into the oil boom of Whittier

Nestled among apartment buildings above Beverly Boulevard rests a two-story seven- room mansion that goes unnoticed. Outside of the Comstock Apartments on the 5800 block of Comstock Avenue are columns from a gazebo originally in front of the mansion. What lies behind is the home originally built by oilman William Loftus in 1911.

"We do get people that come up, usually older folks who know about the house," said apartment manager, Veronica Wilkerson. "I can usually tell that they are here to see the house."

The house is adorned with three bathrooms, hardwood floors, hand-carved wood and sliding pocket doors that separate rooms.

"One of the most spectacular things about this house is the stained glass panel," said Wilkerson. "It has been reported that it is an unsigned original Dale Tiffany."

It also has a stained glass dome, that is in the ceiling above the staircase, depicting scenes from the area.

Although the house has been divided into apartments, much of the elegant decor has been preserved. They found gold leaf details that had been painted over as well as some other wood features.

The house is divided into seven rental units that share the bathrooms and a kitchen.

Wilkerson says that the current owners, who built that 24-unit apartments around the house, fought to keep the house after they were told to demolish it by the city.
