How much exercise do I need?

Posted on 27. Feb, 2013 by Jenn in Health & Fitness

The following post is brought to us by guest blogger Kyle Turcotte, Certified Exercise Physiologist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.?

Physical Activity is important for our health and we need different types of activity to keep us healthy.? Health is a multifaceted concept and physical health is just one part of it, but that?s a conversation for another day.? So having said that, how much exercise do we need?

How much exercise?

There are a couple of ways to look at this question.? An easy way to answer this is to look to an excellent document put out by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and Participaction, Canada?s Physical Activity Guidelines. ?There are different age-specific guidelines available ? adult, older adult, youth, etc.? You can visit CSEP?s website by clicking here to see them all.? Let?s look at the recommendations for adults.

Aerobic or ?Cardio? Training

There are two components of fitness covered by the recommendations, aerobic and resistance training.? Recommendations for the quantity of aerobic or ?cardio? is at least 150 minutes a week.? ?Intensity defines the quality of exercise with the recommendation that it be moderate to vigorous.? Moderate refers to activity that gets a light sweat going, like a brisk walk or a bike ride.? Vigorous describes activity that gets you sweating and out of breath, like jogging or cross country skiing.

Another way to tell if your intensity is vigorous is to do the talk test; if you can hold a conversation your intensity is not high enough.? Vigorous exercise is challenging and you may need to work your way up to that level.? I?ll be talking about how to incorporate progression into exercise in a future post.

Resistance Training

For resistance exercises the recommendations are to include strengthening exercises two days a week.? This is a good place to start and these two days need to be nonconsecutive.? Resistance training variables ? sets, reps and rest period ? can be manipulated to produce different types of changes to your muscles.? Endurance is the best place to start, 1-2 sets of 12-20 reps with about 1 minute rest between sets.

Last month I shared why resistance training is important as well as a basic intro program to get you started in The Importance of Resistance Training.

Fitness Testing

Fitness testing is an excellent way to check up on your physical fitness, just like going to the doctor.? CSEP professionals are qualified to evaluate health-based fitness.? Look for a CSEP Certified Personal Trainer or Certified Exercise Physiologist if you would like to have a personal fitness assessment.?? A well-executed fitness assessment should be followed by goal setting and plan to help you achieve those goals.

You need a place to start, a bench mark on getting healthy.? Start here, but keep in mind that this is just the beginning you can be even healthier by being more physically active.? So get out there and find something you love to do that will help meet and exceed the guidelines!

Keep Well?Kyle

Microsoft's Office 365 subscription service is now available for businesses

Back when Microsoft released its Office 365 subscription service for home users, it said the business version would be arriving on February 27th. Sure enough, today's the 27th, and Microsoft's issued a press release explaining the pricing for Office 365 ProPlus, Midsize Business and Small Business Premium.

At the least expensive end of the spectrum is ProPlus, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, InfoPath and Access. Like the Home Premium version of Office 365, a user can install the software on up to five devices, though IT controls are of course more of selling point here than they are on the consumer version. That costs $144 per user for a one-year subscription.

Moving on, the medium-sized-business sku costs $180 per user per year, and adds Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and a few IT tools. It, too, is based on the same five-device-per-user model as ProPlus. As for the small business version, you get all the basic Office apps, plus email, shared calendars, website tools and videoconferencing. Pricing there is $150 per user per year. Sorry, though, no dice on the five-device, ProPlus thing -- that's not included in the small biz version.

Iran: Nuclear negotiations end on positive note

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary and chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili listens during a meeting on Iran's nuclear program, in Almaty, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013. Seeking even a small step forward in a yearslong dispute, negotiators from Iran and six world powers mulled options for preserving Tehran's nuclear program while still trying to keep it from becoming an atomic arsenal. (AP Photo/Shamil Zhumatov, Pool)

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? Negotiations with world powers over how to curb Iran's nuclear program have reached a "turning point" for the better after nearly breaking down last year, the Islamic republic's top official at diplomatic talks said Wednesday at the close of two days of delicate discussions aimed at preventing Tehran from building an atomic arsenal.

While still guardedly optimistic, the comments by Saeed Jalili, the secretary for Iran's Supreme National Security Council, marked a significant step forward in a years-long process that has been rife with suspicions and, if it fails, could lead to a new Mideast war. The Obama administration is pushing for diplomacy to solve the impasse but has not ruled out the possibility of military intervention in Iran to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Jalili said a new offer this week by the world powers to compromise is more realistic than what has been offered in the past. He described the new offer "including some relief from international sanctions" as a step to build confidence between the two sides after similar negotiations in Moscow were nearly derailed last June.

"In this round of talks we have witnessed that despite all the attitudes during the last eight months, they tried to get closer to our viewpoints," Jalili told reporters at the close of two days of talks in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, speaking through an interpreter. "We believe this is a turning point."

Jalili did not detail what the sanctions relief might include, or what Iran was willing to do to in exchange.

If they offer steps aimed at strengthening trust, this is important, he said. One important step is dealing with a series of crippling sanctions that the U.S., E.U. and U.N Security Council have imposed on Iran to try to force it to bend on its nuclear program. The sanctions have caused unemployment and inflation in Iran to skyrocket, while depressing its daily oil output and value of its currency, the rial.

A senior U.S. official at the talks said the offer included some sanctions relief ? but not on Iran's oil and financial industries, where the measures have hit the hardest. The official declined to characterize what sanctions might be lifted, but said a number of the restrictions imposed by the U.S and E.U. would be suspended. Additionally, the U.N. Security Council and E.U. would impose no new sanctions against Iran.

In exchange, the U.S. official said, Iran would have to end any uranium enrichment that nears or reaches 20 percent. The official added that Iran would be required to restrict its current stockpile of enriched uranium to that level, which is just a few steps away from being ready for use as a nuclear warhead.

Tehran would also have to suspend enrichment at its underground Fordo facility and prevent it from being able to re-start that process quickly. U.N. inspectors also would also be given greater room to monitor Iran's nuclear program, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks more candidly.

The Iranian negotiators "appeared to listen carefully to the offer," the U.S. official said. There was no deadline on when the offer might expire, but the official warned that time is already running out for Tehran to accept it.

Jalili said the Iranian people remained defiant despite the punitive sanctions leveled against it.

Even in the economic area, the pressure they have talked about could not bring the results they were wishing, he said, speaking through an interpreter.

He would not budge on Iran's longtime insistence, and a main sticking point in the talks, that it has the right to enrich uranium to 20 percent.

"Whatever we need, we will of course pursue that ? whether it is 5 percent or 20 percent," Jalili said. "It is important to us to have the 20 percent."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is leading the negotiations, urged Iran to quickly respond to the offer because "we need to see the progress necessary for the confidence the international community needs."

"I hope the Iranians are looking positively on the proposals we put forward," Ashton said. "I believe in looking at what the results are."

Technical experts for each side will meet in Istanbul in mid-March to discuss the world powers' offer and the high-level diplomats will re-convene again April 5 in Almaty.

Senior U.S. diplomats have described technical expert negotiations as an especially useful and practical forum in which to clarify some of the more complex sticking points.

Off-and-on talks between Iran and the world powers ? the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany ? began after the six offered Tehran a series of incentives in 2006 exchange for a commitment from Tehran to stop enrichment and other activities that could be used to develop weapons.

Tehran maintains it is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and medical isotopes, and insists it has a right to do so under international law. It has signaled it does not intend to stop, and U.N. nuclear inspectors last week confirmed Iran has begun a major upgrade of its program at the country's main uranium enrichment site.

Iran insists, as a starting point, that world powers must recognize the republic's right to enrich uranium. Tehran also has said shuttering Fordo is out of the question and that Iran first wants the U.N. Security Council to withdraw all of the sanctions it has heaped on the nation.

Iran has been unimpressed with earlier offers by the powers to provide it with medical isotopes and lift sanctions on spare parts for civilian airliners, and new bargaining chips that Tehran sees as minor are likely to be snubbed as well.

United Nations in South Africa ? News Archive ? Secretary ...

Geneva - I thank the International Commission against the Death Penalty for organizing this discussion, and I commend the critical role of civil society in mobilizing global support on this important issue. The right to life is the most fundamental of all human rights. It lies at the heart of international human rights law. The taking of life is too absolute, too irreversible, for one human being to inflict on another, even when backed by legal process. That is why the United Nations system has long advocated the abolition of the death penalty. International and hybrid tribunals supported by the UN do not provide for capital punishment, nor does the International Criminal Court.

Since the General Assembly first voted on a moratorium in 2007, the trend against capital punishment has gained momentum. In December 2012, the Assembly?s support for a moratorium was 111 in favour to 41 against, with 34 abstentions. The resolution calls on States to progressively restrict the use of capital punishment and not to impose it for offences committed by persons below 18 years of age and pregnant women. States were also asked to reduce the number of offences subject to the death penalty.

The sentiment towards abolition finds echoes in every region and across legal systems, traditions, customs and religious backgrounds. Currently some 150 States have either abolished the death penalty or do not practice it. I am therefore concerned that some countries with a longstanding de facto moratorium have recently resumed imposing the death penalty, and have even carried out executions. Even well-functioning legal systems sentence and execute persons who have been ultimately proven innocent. Wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice have condemned innocent people to years of anguish on death row before being executed or exonerated.

In those States that continue to impose the death penalty, thousands of individuals are executed each year ? often in violation of international standards, such as the right to fair trial and due process. The death penalty is still used for a wide range of crimes, such as drug crimes, which do not meet the threshold of ?most serious crimes?, and information concerning the application of the death penalty is often cloaked in secrecy.

Capital punishment is inconsistent with the mission of the United Nations to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights and the dignity and worth of the human person. A global moratorium is a crucial stepping stone towards full worldwide abolition. I urge you to use this meeting to consider how to further this end.

I wish you a productive discussion.

Why are Bob Woodward and the White House arguing over the sequester?

The blame-game over who?s responsible for the 'sequester' and its automatic spending cuts finds journalistic icon Bob Woodward, engaged in a dispute with the White House.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / February 24, 2013

Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward shown on CNN's "Larry King Live" in 2004. Woodward and the White House have been arguing about the sequester and its across-the-board budget cuts scheduled to hit Friday.

The blame-game over who?s responsible for the ?sequester? and its automatic spending cuts ? which everyone agrees is a terrible way to run Washington?s business ? finds journalistic icon and Pulitzer Prize winner Bob Woodward at the center of the controversy, engaged in a shouting (or at least tweeting) match with the White House.

The essence of the flap is Woodward?s assertion that Obama administration officials (and the President himself) fathered the notion of sequestration as a way of forcing all hands in Washington to come up with a rational spending cut and revenue plan for reducing the federal deficit, and that Obama had ?moved the goal posts? on budget negotiations by seeking new revenues to accompany spending cuts.

White House press secretary?Jay Carney?calls Woodward?s charge in a Washington Post op-ed column Sunday ?willfully wrong.?

Sequester 101: What happens if $85 billion in cuts hit on March 1

Elaborating in a statement Sunday, the White House said, ?There has never been any question that the President seeking revenues as part of a plan to replace the automatic cuts in the sequester was expected from the very beginning in the 2011 fiscal negotiations and the passage of the Budget Control Act. That the President today is seeking a balanced plan to replace it with revenues and entitlement reforms cannot in even the slightest way be considered a change of policy, a change of expectations, or moving the goalposts.?

To which Woodward responded in an email to Politico: "The White House pushback is a classic case of distortion and confusion.?

"We unfortunately have seen this too often in recent presidential history,? he emailed. ?I do not think it is willful. They are just mixed up, surprisingly so."

Since this is Oscar night, we pause to note that in an earlier drama Woodward was played by Robert Redford in the 1976 movie about how he and Carl Bernstein ? Dustin Hoffman on screen ? unearthed the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon, launching a generation of would-be investigative reporters and securing tenure for their journalism professors.

West Bank villagers view Oscars at night, outdoors

BILIN, West Bank (AP) ? This wasn't your typical Oscar viewing party.

In the West Bank village whose struggle to regain land taken by Israel was portrayed in an Oscar-nominated documentary, activists huddled around a campfire before dawn Monday to watch the ceremony.

For added symbolism, they pinned the screen to a tent just meters (yards) away from Israel's West Bank separation barrier, which cut off the village of Bilin from much of its land.

Some smoked water pipes, huddled in sleeping bags or warmed their hands over the fire as actors in gowns and tuxedos performed on a stage half-way around the world.

The documentary, "5 Broken Cameras," did not win, and some said they were disappointed. But protest organizer Abdullah Abu Rahma says the Oscar nomination gave Bilin's struggle a big push.

The village has been the scene of weekly protests against the barrier, which were documented in the film. Palestinians charge that the barrier, which cuts into the West Bank, is a land grab. Israel says it's needed to keep Palestinian attackers out.

Firefox Smartphones Coming Soon - Business Insider

ZTE

ZTE Firefox OS smartphone

Mozilla today announced big progress with its new smartphone operating system.

We've been hearing dribbles and drabs about Firefox OS all year long. It will launch first in Europe but Mozilla also announced that Sprint has signed on.

That's the first U.S. carrier.

The European carriers will be selling it starting in mid-2013. Manufacturers of the phones so far include Alcatel, LG and ZTE, Huawei.

U.S. users can get their hands on the OS by installing it on an Android phone. Plus, a company called Geeksphone makes the device.

The Verge's Chris Ziegler, who was living blogging today's press conference at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, wasn't too impressed with the ZTE Open. He called it "an extremely low-end device."

Quality aside, this is an interesting experiment by Mozilla. This smartphone OS is built entirely from Web standards, like HTML5, and "free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms," Mozilla says.

All told Mozilla announced 18 mobile operator partners in nine countries.

Dot Earth Blog: Exploring Climate Resilience and Energy Sense

I visited Los Angeles this week to discuss new approaches to environmental communication with students and faculty at the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability of the?University of California, Los Angeles. I also joined two of the university?s professors ? the climate scientist Alex Hall and the environmental historian Jon Christensen ? for an onstage Z?calo Public Square discussion of this question: ?Should we just adapt to climate change?? (The answer of course is?drumroll?no.)

I encourage you to watch the conversation above. I?ve had time to transcribe a few sections, which are appended below, but wanted first to summarize an important point made by Hall, who has been using models to project regional temperature shifts for the Los Angeles region.

Hall said that by mid-century the region may see 4 to 5 degrees F. of warming ? as well as more frequent stretches of dangerously hot summer days ? under a ?business as usual? emissions trajectory. But even in an idealized (i.e., impossible) future in which worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions were somehow deeply curtailed, the city would still see 70 percent of that warming. Only late in the century would the unabated gas buildup cause a much bigger regional heating.

A central take-home message, he said (and I agreed), is that adaptation to heat is a prime imperative even as the much tougher task of moving beyond conventional use of fossil fuels is pursued.

There were great questions on a host of fronts, with several attendees focusing on oil ? both through the debate over the proposed Keystone XL pipeline and the growing recognition that California, which for a century has been an oil producer, is poised for a huge expansion of drilling for both oil and natural gas in the state?s Monterey shale deposits.

Here?s part of what I said on Keystone:

On the Keystone fight, essentially I?ve been saying ? not quite to the extent Joe Nocera said in The Times a couple of days ago when he called the protests ?boneheaded,? which I think was not productive ? I have been among those who?ve said you look at the global oil market and you realize that as long as the oil price is somewhere around $100 a barrel we will be going to the ends of the Earth the dirtiest possible places, to get the last drop. Of course now we won?t have to because California is going to be the next shale oil bonanza. [There were boos, and I stressed I was merely noting the reality, not endorsing it.] Maybe the Alberta tar sands won?t look so attractive. What I?m saying is it?s high demand that drives the oil-extraction imperative. Until you start to do the things we?ve been talking about to cut demand, you can blockade a certain pipeline or whatever but that oil will out?. It?ll be Nigeria or the Arctic if it?s not Alberta. So that gets me in trouble. So there?s a lot of yelling. The whole climate debate for years has been this yelling match. ?Yelling Fire on a Hot Planet,? remember the piece I wrote in 2006.

As I did the other day, I described the excitement surrounding an engineering contest I judged this week in which middle-school students from around the country presented their sustainable and energy-smart urban designs:

On Monday, I was in Washington, D.C., at a meeting that was part of National Engineers Week and these young people from around the country ? middle school students ? came for the finals of this big Future City Competition. These kids had to build model cities, very detailed, with water catchment areas for storm water, water filtration, thinking about fire hazards. They were building Indian cities, some did a city in Norway, some did Phoenix. Instead of yelling, I heard cheering. It?s so great. It?s so much more powerful.

A question was posed about the extensive and decades-old oil fields in neighborhoods near the Culver City venue for the talk, and the prospect for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, expanding there and elsewhere in the state.

I said the newly appreciated reality that oil and gas are here for decades to come required that President Obama step beyond his ?all of the above? energy strategy and craft policies that ensure we keep advancing post-fossil energy technologies and efficiency efforts:

Having cheap natural gas will impede both the build-out of renewable energy options and also basic science in energy. Obama said something very valuable early in his first term. He talked about a shock and trance energy policy in this country ? mainly focused on gasoline prices. But you can see that if energy prices, especially for natural gas, stay low for a long period of time, we?ll be back in a trance and the imperative for other tougher pushes, whether it?s a build-out of renewables, as Joe Romm would like, or much more R. and D., as I would like, it?s just going to be really hard to sustain that.

There?s plenty more, including a great question about making climate-friendly fuels using carbon dioxide captured from air, posed by 14-year-old Benji Fields (the son of a friend). (I wrote about one such concept a few years ago.) I know the rumors that the president has chosen Ernest Moniz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to be his next energy secretary, but I mused that perhaps Benji had a shot.

If you see passages that excite or irk you, and have time, please include transcribed excerpts in your comments.

Hubble sees a glowing jet from a young star

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image showing an object known as HH 151, a bright jet of glowing material trailed by an intricate, orange-hued plume of gas and dust.

It is located some 460 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), near to the young, tumultuous star HL Tau.

In the first few hundred thousand years of life, new stars like HL Tau pull in material that falls towards them from the surrounding space. This material forms a hot disc that swirls around the coalescing body, launching narrow streams of material from its poles. These jets are shot out at speeds of several hundred kilometers (or miles) per second and collide violently with nearby clumps of dust and gas, creating wispy, billowing structures known as Herbig-Haro objects -- like HH 151 seen in the image.

Such objects are very common in star-forming regions. They are short-lived, and their motion and evolution can actually be seen over very short timescales, on the order of years. They quickly race away from the newly-forming star that emitted them, colliding with new clumps of material and glowing brightly before fading away.

Snapchat video messaging comes to the stable Android app

The popular self-destructing message app Snapchat just got a nice new feature on Android. We told you recently that video messaging had come to the beta version of Snapchat, but now the update has gone live and the video messaging feature has made it to the stable version of the app in the Google Play Store.

Video messages are limited to just 10 seconds in length, and carry a 1 to 10 second self-destruct option. The app still offers the same options for text messages and images can be sent to contacts on the same timer anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds. And, the app will notify the person who sent you the message if you attempt to take a screenshot in order to save the message.

The update also includes a new notification system, which gives users more control over what kind of alerts are shown. The app is also supposedly faster and more reliable.?

If you want to give it a shot, Snapchat is available for free in the Google Play Store.

University of Iowa Shares Student Information with Law Enforcement

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The University of Iowa has been sharing information with local law enforcement about students who apply for gun permits.

The Des Moines Register says the information normally is kept confidential in keeping with the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.

Mark Braun is chief of staff for university President Sally Mason, and he says that in some cases information on failing grades may be included or information about depression or anger issues.

A university lawyer says forms signed by gun permit applicants at the Johnson County Sheriff's Office lets the university share that information with the Sheriff's Office.

The U.S. Department of Education says the waiver of the federal rules must specify which records will be disclosed, but the Johnson County form doesn't mention school- or education-related records.

Chromebook Pixel: Google's Retina, Touchscreen, MacBook Pro Counterpunch

Until now, Chromebooks hadn't been much more than glorified netbooks; underpowered curios best suited for technological novices. The 13-inch, touchscreen, retina-displayed, full-powered Chromebook Pixel, though, appears to be anything but. And it should be enough to make Apple at least a little nervous. At least until you get to the price. More »

Mercury may have harbored an ancient magma ocean: Massive lava flows may have given rise to two distinct rock types

Feb. 21, 2013 ? By analyzing Mercury's rocky surface, scientists have been able to partially reconstruct the planet's history over billions of years. Now, drawing upon the chemical composition of rock features on the planet's surface, scientists at MIT have proposed that Mercury may have harbored a large, roiling ocean of magma very early in its history, shortly after its formation about 4.5 billion years ago.

The scientists analyzed data gathered by MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging), a NASA probe that has orbited the planet since March 2011. Later that year, a group of scientists analyzed X-ray fluorescence data from the probe, and identified two distinct compositions of rocks on the planet's surface. The discovery unearthed a planetary puzzle: What geological processes could have given rise to such distinct surface compositions?

To answer that question, the MIT team used the compositional data to recreate the two rock types in the lab, and subjected each synthetic rock to high temperatures and pressures to simulate various geological processes. From their experiments, the scientists came up with only one phenomenon to explain the two compositions: a vast magma ocean that created two different layers of crystals, solidified, then eventually remelted into magma that then erupted onto Mercury's surface.

"The thing that's really amazing on Mercury is, this didn't happen yesterday," says Timothy Grove, a professor of geology at MIT. "The crust is probably more than 4 billion years old, so this magma ocean is a really ancient feature."

Grove, along with postdoc Bernard Charlier and Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics and Planetary Science and now MIT's vice president for research, published the results in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Making Mercury's rocks

MESSENGER entered Mercury's orbit during a period of intense solar-flare activity; as the solar system's innermost planet, Mercury takes the brunt of the sun's rays. The rocks on its surface reflect an intense fluorescent spectrum that scientists can measure with X-ray spectrometers to determine the chemical composition of surface materials.

As the spacecraft orbited the planet, an onboard X-ray spectrometer measured the X-ray radiation generated by Mercury's surface. In September 2011, the MESSENGER science team parsed these energy spectra into peaks, with each peak signifying a certain chemical element in the rocks. From this research, the group identified two main rock types on Mercury's surface.

Grove, Charlier and Zuber set out to find an explanation for the differences in rock compositions. The team translated the chemical element ratios into the corresponding building blocks that make up rocks, such as magnesium oxide, silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide. The researchers then consulted what Grove refers to as a "pantry of oxides" -- finely powdered chemicals -- to recreate the rocks in the lab.

"We just mix these together in the right proportions and we've got a synthetic copy of what's on the surface of Mercury," Grove says.

Crystals in the melt

The researchers then melted the samples of synthetic rock in a furnace, cranking the heat up and down to simulate geological processes that would cause crystals -- and eventually rocks -- to form in the melt.

"You can tell what would happen as the melt cools and crystals form and change the chemical composition of the remaining melted rock," Grove says. "The leftover melt changes composition."

After cooling the samples, the researchers picked out tiny crystals and melt pockets for analysis. The scientists initially looked for scenarios in which both original rock compositions might be related. For example, both rock types may have come from one region: One rock may have crystallized more than the other, creating distinct but related compositions.

But Grove found the two compositions were too different to have originated from the same region, and instead may have come from two separate regions within the planet. The easiest explanation for what created these distinct regions, Grove says, is a large magma ocean, which over time likely formed different compositions of crystals as it solidified. This molten ocean eventually remelted, spewing lava onto the surface of the planet in massive volcanic eruptions.

Grove estimates that this magma ocean likely existed very early in Mercury's existence -- possibly within the first 1 million to 10 million years -- and may have been created from the violent processes that formed the planet. As the solar nebula condensed, bits and pieces collided into larger chunks to form tiny, and then larger, planets. That process of colliding and accreting may produce enough energy to completely melt the planet -- a scenario that would make an early magma ocean very feasible.

"The acquisition of data by spacecraft must be combined with laboratory experiments," Charlier says. "Although these data are valuable by themselves, experimental studies on these compositions enable scientists to reach the next level in the interpretation of planetary evolution."

Larry Nittler, a staff scientist in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, led the research team that originally identified the two rock compositions from MESSENGER data. He says the MIT team's experimental results propose a very likely early history for Mercury.

"We're gradually filling in more blanks, and the story may well change, but this work sets up a framework for thinking about new data," says Nittler, who was not involved in the study. "It's a very important first step toward going from exciting data to real understanding."

This research was supported by a NASA cosmochemistry grant, a Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship, and the NASA MESSENGER mission.

South Africa is no stranger to violence against women. Fully 71 percent of women report having been victims of sexual violence, a rate that's among the highest in the world.

Still, the nation is not inured to the horror these crimes inflict. Lindiwe Mazibuko serves in South Africa's parliament. She says the rape and murder of 17-year-old Anene Booyson should spur people to action:

[1:05] "I believe that this can be a watershed moment. I believe it's up to South African society, political leaders, the government and those in the criminal justice system to decide whether or not this will be a watershed moment."

The brutality of the crime, as well as Booyson's bravery identifying one of her attackers before she died, has captivated South Africa. Protesters marched, columnists penned emotional editorials, and President Jacob Zuma weighed in as well.

But political scientist Sally Matthews says much of the discussion misconstrues the problem:

[2:24] "What concerns me is that a lot of the responses to gender-based violence call the men who commit these acts monsters or think of such men as being very different from the rest of us."

Matthews argues that instead of distancing these perpetrators from society as a whole, the community should consider how broadly-held attitudes and opinions contribute to a culture that tolerates violence.

The Valentine's day shooting at the home of Olympian Oscar Pistorius, dropped right in the middle of this conversation.

Pistorius has professed his innocence in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. But he faces a charge of premeditated murder. Authorities said there had been "previous incidents" at the home, including "allegations of a domestic nature," but did not provide details.

In an eerie connection between the two cases, Steenkamp posted a tribute to Booyson on Instagram. Four days later, she died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Turning pine sap into 'ever-green' plastics

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Plastic bags are a bane of nature. And not just bags -- just about all plastics, really. Most are made out of petroleum, and a piece of plastic, if it misses the recycling bin and ends up in a landfill, will probably outlast human civilization.

But Chuanbing Tang at the University of South Carolina is developing new plastics that are "green" from the cradle to the grave. Given that the new polymers he's working on often come from pine trees, firs and other conifers, he's giving the word "evergreen" added resonance.

Rather than tapping a barrel of oil to obtain starting materials, Tang's research group instead begins with the natural resins found in trees, especially evergreens. The rosin and turpentine derived from their wood is rich in hydrocarbons, similar but not identical to some components of petroleum.

Hydrocarbon-rich starting materials, whether from petroleum or tree resin, can be converted into various forms of what are commonly termed "plastics" through polymerization. With petroleum derivatives, scientists have invested more than a hundred years of research into refining the polymer chemistry involved, and their success in that endeavor is evident in the range of plastics now part of common parlance, such as Plexiglas, polycarbonate and PVC.

But processes for developing plastics from renewable sources, such as rosin and turpentine, are not nearly as developed. "Renewable polymers currently suffer from inferior performance in comparison to those derived from petroleum," Tang said.

His laboratory is a national leader in helping change that situation. Tang just received a National Science Foundation CAREER award to further develop the polymer chemistry he has been refining since he arrived as a chemistry professor in USC's College of Arts and Sciences in 2009. The award from NSF's Division of Materials Research will support Tang's laboratory through 2018.

"The aim is to understand how the macromolecular compositions and architectures dictate the properties of the materials we make," Tang said. "If we can establish clear structure-property relationships, we will be able to achieve the kinds of results we now get from polymers made from petroleum."

According to Tang, molecules derived from wood products are particularly worthwhile targets. "They're a rich source of the cycloaliphatic and aromatic structures that make good materials after polymerization," he said. "They have the rigid molecular structures and hydrophobicity that materials scientists know work well."

They also have an advantage at the end of their life cycle. By virtue of being a direct product of biology, the renewable starting materials are a familiar sight for the microbes responsible for biodegradation. "Most plastics from non-renewable resources are generally not biodegradable," Tang said. "With a polymer framework derived from renewable sources, we're able to make materials that should break down more readily in the environment."

Together with graduate student Perry Wilbon, Tang worked with Fuxiang Chu of the Chinese Academy of Forestry to prepare the first comprehensive review of terpenes, terpenoids, and rosin, three components of tree resin (and other natural products as well) that are plentiful sources of cycloaliphatic and aromatic structures. Published as the cover article in Wiley's Macromolecular Rapid Communications in January 2013, the review is a blueprint for just one approach that Tang is taking to develop sustainable polymers from the greenest of sources.

This research was supported in part by an NSF CAREER award (1252611).

Dean Reynolds reports on how the former congressman looted the funds of his donors.

A 22-page document released by the US Attorney?s Office Wednesday details ways the couple collaborated to conceal the spending from federal authorities, even as they solicited fresh campaign donations to keep the spigot flowing. It also outlined how the Jacksons spent campaign money on both the sublime (a $43,350 gold-plated Rolex watch, furs, and exclusive sports and celebrity memorabilia) and the mundane (toilet paper, underwear, children?s vitamins, and food).

?Jesse Jackson lied many time over many years to hide this fraud from the government and most importantly, from his constituents,? US Attorney Ron Machin said at a press conference late Wednesday. ?It?s important to remember the true victims of Jackson?s crimes. This sort of conduct, I don?t think we?ve ever seen it to this scope if you look at the list of items and the amount spent. His [campaign fund] was his personal piggy bank.?

Both Jacksons broke down in tears several times during their separate hearings in Washington. Mr. Jackson, who was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud, and false statements, told US District Judge Robert Wilkins he wished to waive his right to a trial because he has ?no interest in wasting the taxpayers? time or their money.?

?For years I lived off my campaign. I used money that should have been for campaign purposes, and I used them for myself personally,? he said.

Ms. Jackson, who is charged with a single tax crime, also waived her right to a trial and is set for sentencing July 1. Her husband, scheduled for sentencing June 28, faces a possible prison term of nearly five years and a fine of up to $100,000. Sandi Jackson faces a possible prison term of nearly two years.

Under the plea agreement, Mr. Jackson will be sentenced to between 46 and 57 months. His lead attorney, Reid Weingarten, is likely to argue for the shorter sentence on grounds that bipolar depression, a diagnosis Jackson received last fall, contributed to his actions.

Mr. Machin, however, noted Wednesday that Jackson ?was an efficient congressman? during the seven years in question and capably made numerous public appearances, including a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.??It?s hard for me to imagine how they?re going to reconcile this scheme and it being a byproduct of a recent medical condition,? he said.

Marcellus McRae, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice in Los Angeles, says that because Mr. Weingarten did not use the medical condition as a factor to fight the indictment, it may not be a strong enough argument.

When Virginia Beach pizza owner Jay Laze heard about a Utah frozen yogurt shop that gave discounts to gun carrying customers in celebration of the Second Amendment, he didn't think that it seemed unsafe.

Rather, Laze told local station WTKR, "I thought it was a great idea, and I was wondering why nobody here was doing it. It should be happening all around the country."

And that's how All Around Pizzas and Deli, which boasts delivery guys who carry guns, started giving 15 percent off to people who were carrying or flashed their permit.

Apparently, it has been effective. Laze told the AP that 80 percent of customers have brought in a gun thus far, and one went so far as to bring in an AK-47.
