My 13-Year-Old Baldur's Gate Review, Enhanced Edition

My 13-Year-Old Baldur's Gate Review, Enhanced EditionWhen PC role-playing classic Baldur's Gate was released in 1998, I was writing for a small gaming news site called Videogamers.com. BioWare's masterpiece was my first official PC game review. While Videogamers.com is long gone, the magical Internet Wayback Machine houses an archived version of the review, at least until I figure out a way to erase it.

In honor of Beamdog's release of the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for the PC and Mac (still waiting on those mobile versions), I've dug up that collection of loosely-related words and added some writer commentary.

This is going to hurt.

I'd say I started playing Dungeons and Dragons back in 1985. A group of friends and I would camp out in the woods behind my apartment complex and play all night long. I've been playing pretty steadily since then, and I can honestly say I've invested at least 2,000 dollars in the game over the years. I am currently searching for copies of the cartoon (remember Uni?) on video. I have every novel, have played every computer D&D game that's come out, and I own at least 20lbs of dice. D&D (or more correctly AD&D) is one of my greatest passions, right up there with videogames, good Italian food, and my wife (though not necessarily in that order.) That having been said, believe me when I say that Baldur's Gate is the best AD&D videogame yet to have been released.

Look at all those extra words. "I'd say", "honestly", "currently", "yet to have been released". Back in the day, more words meant more quality. Oh yeah, I had a wife at the time. She wasn't very good.

Baldur's gate, developed by Bioware, plays like tabletop AD&D with very animated miniatures, no smoke or potty breaks between rounds, and no waiting for the Dungeon Master to finish up reading the module in the bathroom before you can start. Everything else is by the book, and by that I mean all the rules are here. Encumbrance, THAC0 (to hit armor class 0), fumbled hits, thieving skills, weapon proficiencies, random treasure generation; if it's a rule in the DM or Players' guide, then it's a good bet it made it into the game.

And you thought I was obsessed with toilet gaming now.

Sounds complicated, right?

Dramatic question! I bet I imagined the reader nodding along with this bit.

It is, but not to the gamer. All of these calculations and effects take place behind the scenes. If you fumble and break your weapon, the game will tell you. If you carry more than your strength allows you will have serious trouble keeping up with your party. If you fail your saving throw against petrification, the lesser basilisk will kill you dead. The end result is very satisfying. You can't almost hear the dice rolls going on and you may even catch a whiff of unwashed fanboys enjoying themselves.

That's right, can't. My editor at Videogamers.com was 17. He was probably distracted by girls or fast cars or whatever else the kids were into back then. I am still proud of "unwashed fanboys enjoying themselves".

The story is classic fantasy material. Your initial character is a mysterious orphan, raised by a loving foster father in the city of Candlekeep. Everything is lovely and peaceful until one day, when murderers start showing up hungry for your blood, and your father asks you to flee the city with him under cover of the night. You of course agree, fleeing with him only to be attacked on the road outside town, resulting in the tragic death of the man who was the only family you ever knew. Tired, frightened, and alone, you set off to find the truth behind your life and his death. Thus begins your epic tale.

I should have just copied that from the manual.

As you travel you'll meet some very interesting characters. There is a doom and gloom speaking mage, a druidess who often addresses the player as "Oh omnipresent one", and a Ranger whose sidekick is a miniature giant space hamster named Boo. And these are just the characters you can play. Bioware has populated the Forgotten Realms with familiar faces like Elminster the Archmage and Drizzt Do'Urden the Drow ranger. If you've read the books you'll notice familiar concepts too, like the elven mage you can have join your party who is bonded to his hereditary Moonblade.

LOOK AT HOW MUCH I KNOW ABOUT D&D. Loooooook at it. Impressed, aren't you? I sure am.

The game incorporates many features from other popular games. The perspective is Diablo. The point and click commands reminded me of Warcraft and other games of that ilk. Basically you control your character and up to 5 others as a group or singularly. You pick actions using shortcut keys or handy icons on the display, and the characters follow the instructions. Do you have all characters attack at once, or do you let a few hang back in case of ambush, throw some big fighter into the fray and have your thief circle around for a backstab? Do you want to control all characters yourself or pick from several behavior archetypes? Paper or plastic? That's the beauty of the game. There are so many things to do and so many ways to do them, so gameplay never gets dull or repetitive.

Here I am comparing BioWare to Blizzard, years before it was cool. Let me just slip on my thick-framed black glasses.

The game's presentation is very solid. The menus are mainly icon driven and easy to navigate, especially the "paper doll" style inventory screen where you can drop equipment, armor, weapons, and even quick-access spells onto your characters to prepare them for battle. On the main screen you have a large playfield area, with the areas you have not visited blacked-out (love that feature). Each character has a set of quick icon commands that appear along the bottom of the screen when they are selected. Here you can place oft-used spells, magic scrolls, wands, potions, or special abilities like turning undead or laying hands. Everything you need is right at your fingertips thanks to the intuitive interface.

Very solid. Not sure what that means. And look at me getting all excited over a fog-of-war feature. I was so cute back then.

The detailed graphics of Baldur's Gate are nothing short of amazing. Each map location is almost like a painting, with a look and feel that balances technical skill with artistic flair. While this is enough to satisfy most critics, the developers add day and night effects as well as snow and rain, complete with lightning lighting up the screen. Your characters and other NPC's not only look great but animate smoothly. The fact that your characters' looks change with their equipment is a very nice touch. Monsters are menacingly portrayed, from the tiny kobold to hill giants and beyond. Baldur's Gate also has its fair share of special effects, most notably the spells that spring to life from their caster's hands in brilliant flashes of light and color and sound. Just like I used to imagine them.

To this day I stand by the fact that the most important feature for a role-playing game to have is equipment that changes a character's appearance. If I am putting on new armor, I want to see new armor.

Adding to the ambiance is the soundtrack, consisting of tunes as epic as the adventure it accompanies. Pounding music meets the clash of weapons in battle while underlying menace can be heard in the dungeon dirges. The sound effects add to the environment nicely, bringing not only the clang of swordplay and the growl of the beast, but also the ambient noise of the realms, like crickets chirping at night or the murmurs from a crowded tavern. Rounding out the sound portion of our review are the voices, which manage to avoid being cheesy while adding some (much needed at times) comic relief. You may lose bladder control the first time the insane ranger yells, "Go for the eyes Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!"

Thirteen years later I am still losing bladder control, and not just while playing video games!

The multiplayer play consists of the same storyline as the main game, but instead of one player controlling 6 characters, up to 6 people can play at a time, each controlling their own character. Almost like sitting around the old gaming table. If you get a good group together it almost doesn't get any better than this. As with every game of its type, beware of the few bad apples out there who want the money from your pouch and the experience from your death.

I forgot Baldur's Gate had a multiplayer feature until reading this.

Now to be fair I did have a few problems with Baldur's Gate. The install was the main issue. Unless you have room for the full install you will have to swap between the 5 CDs frequently. Oh, and the full install is 2.5GB. Yes, times are a'changing. I also had some trouble with slowdown during some of the more "Ten Commandment" sized battles, but not enough to ruin my overall enjoyment of the game.

Holy shit, 2.5GB!? Somebody call the pope!

After playing Baldur's Gate for several days I have still not seen everything. The game is huge and every inch is more interesting than the last. I have to say it's about damn time someone truly captured the essence of AD&D in a computer game. Bioware has done it, and with the promise of further expansions (read: modules!) for this masterpiece, Baldur's Gate will keep you going for a long time coming. Just remember to eat and bathe, fanboys.

Rest assured the constant mention of dirty fanboys was the result of my own dirty fanboyishness.

And here we have the old VideoGamers.com rating system, in which I arbitrarily tossed out letters that seemed right.

I believe there's an Austin Powers reference in there, though I admit nothing.

Well that was painful, though not nearly as bad as some of my other early reviews. You might find some of them here. I apologize in advance.

Health-care providers can play critical role in reducing and preventing intimate partner violence

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? In a perspective article to appear in the Nov. 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health (BUSM and BUSPH) report that health-care providers can play a critical role in helping to reduce and prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) by screening and referring patients to appropriate resources.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a comprehensive report on the prevalence of sexual violence, stalking and IPV in the U.S. The report relays the alarming findings that 35.6 percent of women in the U.S. are raped, assaulted or stalked by intimate partners at some point during their lives, and approximately six percent experience these events in a given year. Men are also at risk: 28.5 percent report lifetime victimization and five percent report past year victimization. The annual health care costs for women who are experiencing ongoing IPV are 42 percent higher than those for non-abused women, and it has been estimated that the cost of providing health care to adult survivors of IPV ranges from $2.3 billion to $7 billion in the first year after the assault.

Now that the Affordable Care Act requires insurance coverage to include domestic violence screening of women, physicians are taking a new look at how they respond to patients who are domestic violence survivors. There are several steps doctors should take when patients report potential IPV, including acknowledging the admission of abuse. "We advise thanking the patient for trusting the provider with the information, and expressing concern about the patient's safety," explained lead author Jane Liebschutz, MD, MPH, FACP, an associate professor of medicine and social and behavioral sciences at BUSM and BUSPH respectively.

Other steps include: asking the patient if he or she would like to be connected to IPV advocacy services; offering the patient the National Domestic Violence hotline number; considering whether child protective services are required and screening the patient for co-morbid depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

According to Liebschutz, when a patient screens negative for IPV, but providers nevertheless suspect that they are experiencing abuse, it is important that the provider not force disclosure. "It is not critical that the patient acknowledges IPV victimization in order to receive a benefit from the screening. Having asked IPV-related questions signals to the patient that the provider is caring and concerned, trustworthy and willing to discuss the topic during a future visit," she added.

Finally, providers need not receive a positive screening response in order to provide universal education about IPV. "Even if a patient screens negative, providers are encouraged to state that many patients do experience IPV at some point, and that there are many resources to help people who feel unsafe in their relationships," said co-author Emily Rothman, ScD., an associate professor of community health services at BUSPH.

JayBird launches BlueBuds X in-ear Bluetooth headphones for $169.95

If you thought JayBird's Freedom Sprint headphones were the only pair the company had planned for release this year, think again. Today marks the launch of BlueBuds X, an in-ear Bluetooth set with a microphone for taking calls, and a selection of the company's trademarked features. "Shift" technology promises lossless decompression of audio, while "PureSound" filters out white noise present in the vocal range. The headphones also boast "SignalPlus" to ensure stable pairing, the secure fit wings you see above so they stay nice and snug, and an eight-hour battery life. As usual, JayBird is targeting BlueBuds X at the fitness and sports market, but we reckon they'll probably work just as well outside of the gym. If you fancy picking up a pair, then head to the source link below to order them in "Midnight Black" or "Storm White" for $169.95 a piece.

Blue whales use ballet to trick their prey

Like behemoth ballerinas, blue whales pirouette before lunging at their prey, a strategy that may help the giants ambush krill from below.

"This behavior probably improves the whales' chances to engulf the most krill possible," said study co-author Ari Friedlaender, a marine biologist at Duke University.

The new findings, detailed on Tuesday in the journal Biology Letters, may shed light on how the enigmatic creatures hunt and devour their shrimplike prey.

Hungry giants
The blue whale, the world's largest living creature, can span up to 98 feet (30 meters) in length and weigh up to 200 tons (180 metric tons). This creature the size of a submarine uses its bristly, comblike teeth, or baleen, to filter tiny crustaceans called krill from the water. Antarctic whalers who opened up the massive bellies of blue whales often found up to 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of krill, though the sea giants probably don't eat that much every day, Friedlaender told LiveScience.

Because krill cluster in massive swarms, "they're perfect food for something like a baleen whale that wants to engulf a big amount of something at one time," Friedlaender told LiveScience.

While the marine mammals' diet is well-known, how they find their prey remains a mystery.

To understand these foraging behaviors, Friedlaender and his colleagues attached motion sensors to the backs of 22 blue whales using suction cups. They also attached a critter cam to one individual, which showed the ocean and part of the whale's head from the animal's point of view. [See Video as a Blue Whale Dives for Krill]

Underwater ballet
When Friedlaender's team analyzed the data, they found something completely unexpected.

The sensors, which captured several hours of data from each whale, revealed half of the whales doing full, 360-degree turns. Many of these underwater twirls occurred as whales dove for prey.

A blue whale typically spots a dense krill swarm by the dark patch it leaves on the water's surface as seen from below. Once the swarm is spotted, the whale surges upward toward the dark spot and opens its mouth to engulf the krill in one big gulp. But sometimes, it also whirls around as it performs this lunge.

    4. First Sicilians didn't much care for seafood

"As it opens its mouth it begins to roll over. It's a very energetically costly thing to do ? it's like a parachute opening and the whale slows down considerably," Friedlaender said.

The stealthy strategy may allow whales to anticipate the krills' escape route and adjust before the krill have a chance to cluster together out of reach, he added.

Because one dense krill patch could provide a day's worth of food, it makes sense to perfect their hunting strategies, even if it takes a lot of energy, the researchers write in the journal article.

Whales also turned just before and between dives, suggesting the rotations help the cetaceans scope out the location of prey.

"As in all cetaceans, the eyes are positioned laterally, and thus rolling the body should enhance panoramic vision in multiple dimensions," the researchers write.

(AP Photo/Ishtiaq Mahsud)

(AP) ? A suicide bomber on Thursday attacked a prominent Pakistani militant commander in the country's northwest who is believed to have a nonaggression pact with the army, wounding him and killing seven people, officials said.

The bomber attacked Maulvi Nazir in Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan tribal area, as he was arriving at an office he uses to meet with locals and hear their complaints, said the commander's spokesman, Maulana Ameer Nawaz. Nazir was not critically wounded, said Nawaz.

Nazir was one of over a dozen people wounded in the attack, said Pakistani intelligence officials and a local government administrator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. They initially reported that three people died, but later raised the number to seven after some of the critically injured died of their wounds.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for the past several years and has jockeyed with Nazir for power in South Waziristan.

The tribal area was the Pakistani Taliban's main sanctuary until the army launched a large ground offensive in 2009 and pushed many of them out.

Nazir is widely believed to have cut a deal with the army ahead of the offensive that allowed him to stay in South Waziristan as long as he remained on the sidelines. The militant commander has in the past focused his fight against U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, not against the Pakistani state.

Nazir had been running a secret campaign in recent weeks to push the Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants allied with them out of Wana and the surrounding areas, said intelligence officials.

Nawaz, the militant commander's spokesman, said the suicide bomber who attacked Nazir appeared to be a 15- or 16-year-old boy.

"The moment the chief got out of his vehicle, the boy ran toward him and detonated his explosives," Nawaz told The Associated Press by telephone.

Yar Mohammad, a resident of Wana who witnessed the attack, said the blast was huge.

"I'm seeing smoke everywhere," he said.

Nazir's fighters retaliated after the attack by killing two Pakistani Taliban militants in the main market in Wana, said intelligence officials. There were also reports of Nazir's fighters attacking Pakistani Taliban militants in the nearby village of Kari Kot, they said.

[Real Estate] Median Home Sales Rise in So Cal And Locally ? Los ...

By Allison Ferraro

Southern California home sales rose sharply in October as buyers joined investors, shifting the mix of homes selling up a notch as foreclosure resales hit a five-year low, according to DataQuick, a real estate research firm out of La Jolla, CA.

The median price paid for a home rose nearly 17% from a year earlier, a real estate information service reported. Last month?s sales were the highest for the month of October 2009, though they were 11.1% below October 1988.

The rise in prices, according to DataQuick was due to higher demand, triggered by ultra-low mortgage rates compared to a lower supply of homes on the market. Additionally, foreclosures were a smaller share of sales, while move-up homes are a larger share, raising the median price.

Locally, the median price for a single-family home mirrored this trend. Median prices in the Echo Park area (90026) rose 16% in October?to $533,000?compared to the same time last year.

Los Feliz saw similar gains. In October 20 homes were reported sold, at a median price of $894,000?up 11.8% from a year ago.

Silver Lake median prices were also higher, 8.4%. In October the median price for a home was $565,000.

Home prices in October in the Hollywood Hills (90068) were also higher, 11.9% compared to last year, for a median price of $865,000.

Median prices for condominimums locally, however, were mixed.

Median prices for condos rose in Los Feliz and the Hollywood Hills, 10.5% and 8.6% respectively. Silver Lake condos, however, saw a decline in price of 10.5%.

Forex Trading Tips And Tricks That Work - Search Forex

Welcome to the wide world of Forex! Forex is a large, exciting market that is defined by tricks of the trade and advanced financial techniques. The high levels of energy, stress and competition may make currency trading seem unconquerable to you. The tips is this article will give you suggestions that can shape your forex trading experience.

As a new Foreign Exchange trader, you need to decide in what time frame you want to work. If you want to move trades quickly, use the 15 minute and hourly chart to exit your position in just hours. 10 and 5 minute charts are usually used by scalpers to get through the trading process quickly.

Only choose a Foreign Exchange program that you can customize. You want to be able to make changes to your system and software so that they fit your strategy. Don?t purchase any software unless you?re sure you?ll be able to customize it to suit your needs.

The term ?Forex? means ?foreign exchange.? This type of market is all about currency trading. You can make profits and perhaps make this your career. Buying and trading is definitely not something you want to jump into without a solid foundation of knowledge to work from.

TIP! Developing a plan before making forex trades is essential. There is no short cut to forex trading success.

Although analysis is important, no trade is going to be assured of success. You must evaluate your specific risk profile, and decide how much risk you are comfortable taking. Once you understand the basics of trading, you will be able to create a plan that works for you, and allows you to understand the market.

Don?t let your emotions carry you away when you trade. It is often said that bad trades were being caused by anger, greed or even panic, so don?t make trades when you are feeling emotional. You will massively increase risk and be derailed from your goals if you let emotions control your trading.

Research your broker when using a managed account. Select a broker that, on average, does better than the market. A good broker needs experience, so find someone who has worked in the field for a minimum of five years.

Don?t ever consider going against trends if you?re just a beginner at trading in the market. You should also avoid selecting your highs or lows against the current market. Go with the flow of the market if you are starting to feel overwhelmed. Going against the market trends is stressful and not worth the money you will lose.

TIP! Since forex trading can be complicated, you might not want to dive in right away. Fortunately, you can practice using demo platforms.

Select a trading style based on your priorities. If you aren?t going to be a full-time day trader, then trade asynchronously over a longer span of time, say a week or a month.

Most people think that stop loss marks are visible. This is completely untrue, and trading without a stop loss marker is very dangerous.

Forex trading can be exciting, especially for new traders, who sometimes devote a great deal of energy to it. Many traders can only truly focus for a handful of hours at a time. The market is not going anywhere, so take breaks to clear your head and refocus.

TIP! If you prefer an investment that is relatively safe, consider Canadian currency. It may be hard to tell what is happening in another country?s economy, so this makes things tricky.

Do not chose your foreign exchange trading position based on that of another trader?s. People are more likely to brag about their successes than their failures. Even a pro can be wrong with a trade. Rely on your personal strategies, your signals and your intuition, and let the other traders rely on theirs.

In the world of foreign exchange, there are many techniques that you have at your disposal to make better trades. The world of forex has a little something for everyone, but what works for one person may not for another. Hopefully, these tips have given you a starting point for your own strategy.

Post-divorce parenting arrangements increasingly diverse - Marilyn ...

A study of separated parents in Australia suggests that child contact arrangements are becoming more diverse. The findings point to a shift from traditional arrangements where a father would see their children every second weekend, to agreements with more paternal involvement.

The study of separated parents registered with the Australian Child Support Agency found that children generally move between parents? houses two or four times a fortnight. The research also suggests that there is more sharing of parental responsibilities than has been evident in the past. For instance, there are now more 50/50 arrangements where children spend a week at a time with each parent.

Study leader Dr Bruce Smyth, of the Australian National University, said concern had been expressed about moving children between homeses too often. However, according to the report:

?The new data suggests that arrangements involving frequent moves between homes are not the norm. Fewer transitions help to limit children?s exposure to parental hostility at handovers and offers greater predictability for children, especially young children.?

Dr Smyth added:

?All parenting arrangements involve trade-offs, single long blocks of time with each parent require fewer transitions for children, but involve longer absences from one parent. By contrast, more fragmented schedules require more transitions for children but help to minimise the time away from each parent.?

He said creative arrangements can be effective in amicable situations:

?Most parenting arrangements can work well where parents get along, there?s some flexibility, and the arrangements are child-responsive.?

EU reviews cancer drug from Merck and Endocyte

NEW YORK (AP) ? Merck & Co. and Endocyte Inc. said Tuesday that European Union regulators will review their drug vintafolide as a treatment for ovarian cancer.

The companies said the European Medicines Agency will review vintafolide as a treatment for ovarian cancer that is resistant to platinum-based chemotherapy. The agency will also review their application for a diagnostic agent that is intended to help identify patients who could benefit from the drug.

Vintafolide is designed to target a folate receptor that appears on cancer cells but doesn't exist on most other cells. Endocyte, based in West Lafayette, Ind., said the receptor is found on 80 to 90 percent of ovarian and lung cancers.

Vintafolide and the diagnostic agent both have orphan drug status, which means competing products will be barred from the market for up to 10 years if they are approved.

Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck will pay Endocyte $5 million because the application was accepted.

Merck stock fell 9 cents to $44.10 and Endocyte shares lost 15 cents to $8.99 in midday trading Tuesday.

President Morsi stands firm despite Egypt protests

Morsi's grab for more power has prompted days of protest by judges and youth, but the president appears confident that he has the numbers on his side.

By Kristen Chick,?Correspondent / November 25, 2012

President Mohammed Morsi, (center), waves to supporters outside the Presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt on Friday. Egypt's official news agency says that the country's highest body of judges has called the president's recent decrees an "unprecedented assault on the independence of the judiciary and its rulings." In a statement carried on MEAN Saturday, the Supreme Judicial Council says they regret the declarations President Mohammed Morsi issued Thursday.

The president's administration issued a statement emphasizing the temporary nature of his nearly unchecked authority, and said his constitutional decree granting it was not meant to concentrate his powers.?

The statement came as some judges were on strike to protest his move, which sidelines the judiciary and removes nearly all checks to President Morsi's power, making his decisions and laws immune to challenge until a new constitution is written. A nationwide judges' strike would mount a strong challenge to Morsi, but it was unclear how widespread the strike was as it appeared that many courts were still working.?

The protests, both on the street and in the courtroom, do not appear large enough to dent the president's momentum, says Mustapha Kamel Al Sayyid, a political science professor at the American University in Cairo.

"I think that the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood is planning a big demonstration ... on Tuesday suggests that they are not inclined to accept a compromise," he says. "I think they are planning to send a message that they have more support in the country than the secularists, and they will not change their position."?

The presidency's statement indicates that rather than compromise, his administration wants to convince people to accept his exceptional powers because they only last for several months. "Of course, with these powers much could be done in two months," says Dr. Sayyid.

Protests dwindled

A protest against Morsi's decree by thousands of people in Tahrir square Friday dwindled to hundreds today.?Several dozen tents stood in the square's garden, where some protesters are sleeping at night. Both opposition groups and the Muslim Brotherhood have called rival rallies in Cairo for Tuesday.?

Protesters fighting police on the outskirts of Tahrir square today near the American embassy say they want to bring down the president's new decree. But the group of several hundred rock-wielding mostly teenage boys also appeared eager for a row with the police.?

Clashes between protesters and police have run almost nonstop since Nov. 19, when a demonstration held to commemorate deadly clashes between protesters and police last year devolved, once again, into violence. The low-level exchange of rocks and tear gas continued as Tahrir square filled up with protesters against Morsi's decree Friday, with some of the demonstrators joining the fight against police but most protesting peacefully in the square.?

Security forces built a wall of concrete blocks across a major downtown road overnight in an attempt to separate protesters and police. The wall was a reminder to many in Cairo that turmoil seems to be the only constant during the nearly two years since a popular uprising swept former President Hosni Mubarak from power. Just over a year ago, security forces built an almost identical wall in nearly the same spot after days of deadly fighting between police and demonstrators protesting the military junta that then ruled Egypt.?(Security forces have built nearly half a dozen others nearby after similar clashes.)?

Many Egyptians had hoped that the instability would end after they elected a new president. But Egypt's stock market plunged Sunday ??falling nearly 10 percent, the most in over a year ??on its first day open since Morsi's decree, as it has done many times over the turmoil of the past years. Around 500 people have been hurt in the past three days of protests.?

Some of the young men joining in the rock-throwing against police complained bitterly that this police force was no different than the one that was notorious for brutality and abuse under Mr. Mubarak, and which continued those policies under military rule. "Morsi's police is attacking us and shooting us just like Mubarak's police did," said Ahmed Ali, a 14-year-old protester who wore a scarf because of tear gas. "And now Morsi wants to be a dictator. We won't allow a new dictator to take Mubarak's place."?

Some judges had reacted angrily to Morsi's decree, with the influential Judges Club calling for a nationwide strike. While courts in several cities were reported to have stopped working today, others were still handling cases. The judiciary has repeatedly delayed Egypt's transition, dissolving its first post-uprising elected parliament, and disbanding a committee elected to write the constitution. Morsi has said that declaring the new constituent assembly immune from court decisions that would disband it, and preventing judicial challenges to his decisions, was the only way to move Egypt through its transition period to stability with a new constitution and parliament.?

What is the Point of Marriage?

This post was submitted by Stella.

So, it?s the weekend and I've been doing my own bit to contribute to the society by heaping my electricity bill while putting in my time on the couch. I am a TV troll. I watch pretty much every TV show you can imagine. Sometimes I wonder how I have time for anything else. Anyway, I digress; back to the point of this post.

Amongst the multitude of reality shows I watch, I noticed a common trend among a majority of the characters that were in relationships: They were living together (a few with kids or planning on having kids). Basically, living like a ?married couple? and for some reason a few of the women were unhappy because "he hadn't put a ring on it."

I look at the couples around me as well and it?s the same situation. One lady in particular stands out to me. She finally got her proposal and is in the thick of planning her wedding. As part of her planning, she has come up with a list of things that must change after marriage. The list includes things like no more late nights with the boys, no friends crashing at their place, and it goes on. They?ve been living together for years and they have two kids (6 & 2). In my eyes, their situation isn?t changing; all they are doing is adding the title of husband/wife and Mrs for the lady.

They already have the companionship, they are sharing responsibilities, supporting each other's dreams and all that good stuff that marriage is supposed to be about. What motivation does the guy have to change his ways? With the current divorce rates I ask, are people getting married just to have the ceremony to splash cash and show off just how much money they are making? Or is it that people believe that the piece of paper they sign will guarantee that they will be together forever? Is getting married just another trend??

I personally feel that if you?ve got a good thing going adding the titles ?Husband? or ?Wife? can only add undue pressure to the relationship. I don?t know if I have been living in my own little bubble for so long that I'm late at noticing this trend, but if so, please forgive me but I still want to hear your thoughts.

In the world we live in today and the way ?dating? is handled, what is the point of marriage??

3 Tips to Keep Your Teen Focused During the Holiday Season

There are 32 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, and it's a safe bet that high school students are counting each and every one of them.

The excitement of the holidays--and the corresponding break from school--can make it hard for teens to focus, but schoolwork can't take a backseat to holiday activities.

"If kids are excelling in school, they don't want to fizzle out now, and if they've been struggling ... now [is] the time that they really need to step up to the plate," says Jennifer Bernstein, a professor at Le Moyne College and founder of Get Yourself Into College, which guides students through the college application process.

Finals and college applications don't disappear during the holiday season, either, so parents should pay close attention to ensure their teen finishes the year on a strong note. The following tips can help parents keep students on track through New Year's.

1. Map it out: Schedules are hectic over the holidays. Jotting application deadlines, assignment due dates, and big exams on the calendar can help parents and students prioritize their time.

"Make a list, check it twice, then make your plan of attack," says Melissa Khan, a Los Angeles-based life coach who works with teens.

That plan should include blocking time out each day so students aren't overwhelmed during the final days of the semester, adds Le Moyne's Bernstein.

[Get three tips to teach teens healthy study habits.]

Using an online calendar allows parents to keep track of their teen's progress without nagging them, she adds.

"Google Calendar is great because it has a share feature," she says. "You can have your teenager indicate on the calendar what he or she accomplished each day, and then you can just keep your eye on things."

2. Embrace the spirit: Don't pretend like this is any other time of year. Instead, harness the excitement to motivate your teen, says Sherri Ziff, a life coach who has two teenagers at home.

"Don't ignore that the energy in the air is all about the holidays coming up," Ziff says. "Encourage a break between English and math and surprise them with a hot chocolate or talk about what gifts they should get friends or family."

Parents can also harness the holiday spirit to engage their teen in service learning activities, says Merle McGee, vice president of programs at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, an after-school program focused on getting teens to college.

[Learn why high school students are not ready for college.]

Volunteering at a soup kitchen or donating gifts to a needy family gets students involved in their community and helps parents promote their family values, McGee says. It also helps build experiences for college applications and essays.

3. Keep looking ahead: December is often a time to reflect on the past year, but parents should also push students to focus on what is in front of them, McGee says.

For juniors, that means starting the college search in earnest. For seniors, that means finishing college essays, submitting applications, and researching financial aid options.

[Get 10 tips for writing college application essays.]

Younger students aren't off the hook, either. Underclassmen should spend the holidays thinking about internships, camps, or classes they want to participate in over the summer, she adds.

"It's an opportunity for them to reflect on ... [how] they will continue to explore themselves and their interests while building a strong collegiate profile," McGee says. "The role of parents is helping to keep their child focused on the activities that they need in order to propel themselves forward towards those higher education goals."

Google settles patent lawsuit from Immersion over Motorola use of haptic feedback

Motorola Droid RAZR family 2012

Immersion is known for guarding its haptic feedback patents with enthusiasm -- just ask Microsoft, among others. Motorola learned first-hand when Immersion sued over the use of basic haptic technology in May, but all that's water under the bridge now that Motorola's new parent Google is settling the matter out of court. While the exact sums aren't public, Google will pay Immersion to address any relevant past shipments, license the patents for future Motorola shipments and take care of "certain issues" with Google-badged hardware using the disputed vibration techniques. Immersion's end of the bargain is simply to end its legal action, including an ITC complaint, although the company makes clear that non-Motorola Android phones aren't covered by the deal. We're sure Google isn't happy to shoulder additional costs on top of its $12.5 billion Motorola acquisition, although it may see the settlement as a matter of establishing focus. After all, there's bigger fish to fry.

NYPD Tracks Stolen Phone Records Forever - Business Insider

When a phone is reported stolen to the New York Police Department, detectives routinely request phone records from the day of the theft onwards, in case the suspect uses the phone to make calls.

The requests, generally made as subpoenas without the victim's consent or knowledge, last anywhere from four days to two weeks, according to an NYPD officer who spoke with the New York Times.

Sprint requires the police to have the victim fill out a form first. Other carriers don't.

The subpoena adds your phone number and numbers called from that phone to?a database called the Enterprise Case Management System. The system allows detectives to cross-reference that number against phone numbers from other cases.

In the process, "the?Police Department?has quietly amassed a trove of telephone logs, all obtained without a court order, that could conceivably be used for any investigative purpose," reports the New York Times.

Sometimes the NYPD could even monitor calls made from a new phone you use to replace the stolen one.?The same subpoena can also include calls made to and from your new phone if the number has been transferred, detectives told the Times.

Detectives tell victims to hold off on transferring their number so they have a better chance of tracking calls made by thieves.

?If large amounts of victim phone records are being collected and added to a searchable database, it?s very troubling,? said Michael Sussmann, a lawyer who represents wireless carriers, interviewed by phone interview via the New York Times.

The NYPD wouldn't comment on whether information obtained from call records had been used for other cases.

Alessandra Relationships Central ? Natural Male Enhancement ...

Natural male enhancement to get a penis size up to 9 in . in length, more thickness, a harder erection, a larger flaccid size, and also enhance your performance in the bedroom is not just probable, it may be guaranteed. The keyword to pay attention to in that previous sentence is ?can?. And that?s because it?s vital that you follow down a wise path if you want to effectively (and naturally) enhance your manhood? without the typical consequences.

In this post here I?m going to share with you my top 4 tips for getting an incredible manhood which i unfortunately needed to learn the tough way. The good news is that I took action, I made mistakes, and i also learned from. The good thing for you is that you be able to take advantage of the understanding I gained to make sure you start on the right feet with increasing your size.

Listed below are My Top 4 Tips To Increase Your Manhood? Effortlessly, Naturally, And also Faster You Think?

1 . Eat right and exercise? Are you surprised? Were you anticipating me to say on the first tip some thing along the lines of ?strap upon 50 pounds of metal to your penis and get bigger in two days?? Well my good friend, contrary to what you could see usually on the web, the initial step to get a bigger diathesis is actually to improve your overall health.

Exactly why is that important?

Properly, consider it: Your penis is mounted on your whole body, right? I hope it is! (LOL) Properly, what you do using the rest of your whole body will also have an effect on your manhood as well.

By consuming healthier (such as getting more fresh fruits, nuts, proteins, healthy body fat, and antioxidants) in your diet, you will definitely make a natural penile enhancement method A lot more effective. The key reason why is because healthy eating promotes stronger blood circulation. Stronger blood circulation into your penile shaft = a larger, harder, and healthier penile!

So far as fitness is concerned, exercising assists with 2 ways. One, it helps also with increasing blood circulation. And also secondly, it helps with decreasing tension. Too much tension can most certainly cause erection issues.

second . Avoid unnatural enlargement methods? Unnatural enlargement techniques will not only prevent you from getting which penis size you have always dreamed of getting, they are going to also cause several pretty disturbing side-effects with your manhood. Some of these side-effects can in fact be long term.

It is vital that you avoid unnatural techniques not just because of side-effects, but also the potential of developing diseases and possibly getting a deformed penile (which is the greatest side-effect of surgery)!

In the event that all that wasn?t sufficient, unnatural techniques (ironically) cost much more than effective natural methods! Go determine!

4. Stick with organic male enhancement? If you want to obtain all those amazing advantages I mentioned in the beginning informed, then a only way you will definitely arrive is with natural methods. The key reason why is because only a organic method is efficient at doing EVERYTHING necessary to increase your size, increase your performance, and boost the health of the male organ.

The best natural method which i recommend (and personally used myself with incredible results) are natural penile exercises.

Exercising your manhood is a surefire method to get all of the benefits of a proper endowed male organ. It is because exercising your manhood increases blood flow, they enhance your PC muscles, they enlarge your penile chambers, and much more. Because of how complete this method is, this only makes sense that this method would result in a COMPLETELY improved male organ.

Main point here, if you want to develop, get more powerful, and get healthier with your diathesis, then I recommend you eat healthier and exercise a minimum of 3 times per week, avoid unnatural enlargement techniques, and stick with all natural enhancement (such as penis exercises). Before you know it, you and your partner will certainly be enjoying some pretty extreme quality time together? if you catch my go!

Are you ready to Enlarge Your Penis QUICK, grow longer and thicker in weeks, and give your lover SHOUTING orgasms? Well, I highly recommend the Penis Advantage workout program. This award winning program is safe, efficient, permanent, and you can download every thing INSTANTLY (no embarrassing prevents at a store or packages to receive)! I went from 5. five inches to seven. 5 inches within 8 weeks using this powerful plan!

> > For additional information, click on http://www.IncreasePenisSizeFast.info to learn more!

CAUTION: The program is EXTREMELY efficient, and I recommend you stop the program for 48-72 hrs if you start to grow more than an inch inside a weeks moment.

FDA halts operations at peanut butter plant

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration halted operations of the country's largest organic peanut butter processor Monday, cracking down on salmonella poisoning for the first time with new enforcement authority the agency gained in a 2011 food safety law.

FDA officials found salmonella all over Sunland Inc.'s New Mexico processing plant after 41 people in 20 states, most of them children, were sickened by peanut butter manufactured at the plant in Portales and sold by Trader Joe's grocery chain. The FDA suspended Sunland's registration Monday, preventing the company from producing or distributing any food.

The food safety law gave the FDA authority to suspend a company's registration when food manufactured or held there has a "reasonable probability" of causing serious health problems or death. Before the food safety law was enacted early last year, the FDA would have had to go to court to suspend a company's registration.

Michael Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, said the agency's ability to suspend a registration like this one is a major step forward for the agency.

"Consumers can be assured that products will not leave this facility until we determine they have implemented preventive measures that are effective to produce safe products," Taylor said.

Sunland had voluntarily closed its plant after a September outbreak and planned to reopen its peanut processing facility on Tuesday, with hopes of selling peanut butter again by the end of the year. Sunland's Katalin Coburn said FDA's decision to suspend the registration was a surprise to the company and Sunland officials had assumed they were allowed to resume operations.

The company now has the right to a hearing and must prove to the agency that its facilities are clean enough to reopen. Coburn said Sunland is cooperating with FDA and company officials hope they can be up and running again soon.

Sunland is the nation's largest organic peanut butter processor, though it also produces many non-organic products. The company recalled hundreds of organic and non-organic nut butters and nuts manufactured since 2010 after Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter was linked to the salmonella illnesses in September.

In addition to Trader Joe's, Sunland sold hundreds of different peanut products to Whole Foods, Safeway, Target and other large grocery chains.

During a month-long investigation, after the outbreak linked to processor Sunland and to Trader Joe's, FDA inspectors found samples of salmonella in 28 different locations in the plant, in 13 nut butter samples and in one sample of raw peanuts.

The agency also found improper handling of the products, unclean equipment and uncovered trailers of peanuts outside the facility that were exposed to rain and birds.

The FDA said that over the past three years, the company shipped products even though portions of their lots, or daily production runs, tested positive for salmonella in internal tests. The agency also found that the internal tests failed to find salmonella when it was present.

FDA inspectors found many of the same problems ? including employees putting their bare fingers in empty jars before they were filled, open bags of ingredients, unclean equipment, and many other violations ? in a 2007 inspection. Similar problems were recorded by inspectors in 2009, 2010 and 2011, though government officials didn't take any action or release the results of those inspections until after the illnesses were discovered this year.

In a statement issued earlier this month, Sunland's president and chief executive officer, Jimmie Shearer, denied the company knowingly shipped tainted products.

"At no time in its 24-year history has Sunland, Inc. released for distribution any products that it knew to be potentially contaminated with harmful microorganisms," Shearer said in a statement posted on the company's website. "In every instance where test results indicated the presence of a contaminant, the implicated product was destroyed and not released for distribution."

A separate peanut butter outbreak in 2009 not related to Sunland was linked to hundreds of illnesses and nine deaths.

Friend Zone in Zura: I have liked my best guy friend for a long time. We have known each other for years and I definitely think it?s time for me to tell him how I feel. I just don?t know how to go about it. It sounds clich?, but I don?t want my feelings to get in the way of our friendship. What if he doesn?t feel the same way and can?t be friends with me anymore at the risk of it being too awkward? What should I do?

Love Guru: Here?s another clich? that might just solve your dilemma: Honesty is the best policy. Seriously girl, you?ve got to spill the beans! While this may not seem like the best advice, there really are no magic words to say which will guarantee he will respond the way you want him to. All you can do is say what?s on your mind. Do it in a setting where both of you are comfortable and make sure the two of you are alone. Don?t drive yourself crazy thinking of exactly how you want to express your affection?a simple ?I like you? will suffice. As for how it will affect your friendship? Face it, one person having feelings for the other will naturally change the dynamic two people have. The difference will be how he treats the situation. If he doesn?t feel the same way, a true friend won?t let such a thing ruin the years you have spent together. In either case, you owe it to yourself to take a chance on love. The way I look at it, you don?t want to look back on your friendship and wonder, ?What if??

Labels in Lipinski: I?ve been seeing this girl, and it?s been going pretty well. We?ve gone out several times, and talked about seeing each other more in the future. Problem is, I don?t know how to define what we are. Are we dating? Or are we in a relationship? Love Guru, what?s the difference?

Love Guru: Let me break down the terminology of the dating world for you. Think about the words themselves. If you are ?dating? someone, you are doing just that?you?re going out on dates with this person, getting to know them. This being said, you can be simultaneously dating multiple people. Now, before you start playing the field, Casanova, consider that, as a young person, you are in the stage of dating. It?s a time in your life when you get to know people, singling out traits of what you like and don?t like. This term can be used more loosely. As for a ?relationship,? that?s an entirely different ball game. This implies more commitment, with the labels of ?girlfriend? and ?boyfriend? usually being attached to the dynamics of your pairing. You?re typically in a relationship if you have discussed both of you being exclusive with your significant other?to not date anyone else. To make it even simpler, try this rule of thumb for those tech-savvy daters out there: if you are serious enough with this person to be Facebook official, then you are in a relationship. Otherwise, you?re dating. Got it?

The flame is gone: I?ve been with my girlfriend for almost two years now and she is really amazing. Lately though, things have slowed down. The things that we usually like to do have become boring and I feel like I?m struggling to keep her interest. What should I do?

Love Guru: It sounds like spice is the missing ingredient here. Surprise her more often: Take her to a new restaurant or plan an adventure to a place you?ve never been before. You obviously know this girl well, so build upon her interests in new and exciting ways to regain spontaneity in your relationship. Have a bouquet of flowers sent to her work with a cute message attached and back it up with some good old-fashioned romance when she gets home. Some newfound zest will definitely turn her on and you?ll be back to your happy ways in no time flat.

Question: Recently, my boyfriend came to me and he wants to set a day aside for himself to go mountain biking with a group of friends. There are other girls in the group which makes me feel uncomfortable and honestly, a tad insecure. What should I do?

Love Guru: Let him take the day. Breathing room is important in any relationship and if he is allowed to take a personal day every once in a while, your relationship will be healthier for it. As for the other girls, you just have to trust him. Trust is a cornerstone in all relationships and if you can?t trust him, your courtship won?t last. Bending and twisting is the name of the game; it is all part of the sacrifice, which make relationships work. He is guaranteed to respect the fact you are willing to let him have personal freedoms and you might just see the outcome of a happier and better partner.

Cyber Stalker: I broke up with my girlfriend about three weeks ago and she is having a really hard time accepting it. She continues to blow up my phone, Facebook and email with sob stories and apologies. I don?t want to be the guy who has to resort to blocking people on Facebook, but this is getting ridiculous. Help!

Love Guru: The most effective way to handle this situation is to?like it or not?talk it out. You need to call her and put it all on the table. Be honest, even if it means using tough love. Your relationship is finished, so there?s no good reason she should be calling you all the time. If she still can?t take the hint, then your only choice is to drop the hammer and block her?if being ?that guy? is your only way out, then do it.
