(AP) ? Thirteen bound corpses, many apparently shot execution-style, have been discovered in eastern Syria just days after the massacre of more than 100 people provoked international outrage and the coordinated expulsion of Syrian diplomats from world capitals.

The latest killings happened in Deir el-Zour province, where the bodies were found late Tuesday blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs, U.N. observers said Wednesday. A statement by the U.N. mission said some appeared to have been shot in the head at close range.

A video posted online by activists showed the men lying face down, pools of dried blood under their heads.

The head of the U.N. observer team, Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, said he was "deeply disturbed by this appalling and inexcusable act."

The fresh killings underline violence that seems to be spiraling out of control as the uprising against President Bashar Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency. Activists say as many as 13,000 people have been killed since the revolt began.

In the wake of last weekend's massacre in Houla, in which nearly half of the 108 dead were children, the United States and Western nations expelled Syrian diplomats in protest ? a move Syria's state-run media denounced Wednesday as "unprecedented hysteria."

The massacre drew continued harsh criticism Wednesday, even from Syria's closest ally Iran, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying that anyone responsible for the killings should be punished. "I'm not excluding anyone from this responsibility," Ahmadinejad told France 24 TV station.

U.N. investigators and survivors have blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages in central Homs province, saying men in civilian clothes gunned down people in the streets and stabbed women and children in their homes. The Syrian government denied its troops were behind the killings and blamed "armed terrorists."

Damascus had said it would conclude its own investigation into the Houla deaths by Wednesday but it was not clear if the findings would be made public. The U.N.'s top human rights body planned to hold a special session Friday to address the massacre.

Meanwhile, violence continued unabated. Syrian forces bombarded rebel-held areas and clashed with army defectors in Homs province, killing at least eight people, activists said.

The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Turkey, Syria's neighbor and a former close ally, joined the coordinated diplomatic action, saying it ordered the Syrian charge d'affaires and other diplomats at the Syrian Embassy in Ankara to leave the country within 72 hours. The consulate in Istanbul will remain open for consular duties only.

Among the most outspoken critics of the Assad regime, Turkey closed its embassy in Damascus in March and withdrew the ambassador. Its consulate in Aleppo remains open, but the Foreign Ministry said it reduced the number of its personnel there on Wednesday.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said new unspecified sanctions might be imposed against Syria in the coming days. The world "cannot remain silent in the face of such a situation," he said.

Japan also ordered the Syrian ambassador in Tokyo to leave the country because of concerns about violence against civilians. Japan's foreign minister, Koichiro Genba, said his country was not, however, breaking off diplomatic ties with Syria.

The Obama administration added new sanctions on a Syrian bank Wednesday as a top White House official said the U.S. wants to economically throttle Assad's regime and cut off salaries of pro-government thugs blamed for the grisly massacre in Houla.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the Syria International Islamic Bank has been acting as a front for other Syrian financial institutions seeking to circumvent sanctions. The new penalties will prohibit the bank from engaging in transactions in the U.S. and will freeze any assets under U.S. jurisdiction.

"We are strangling the regime economically," White House deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough said.

The international community has been grappling with ways to quell the deadly violence and spur a political transition. The U.S. and Western countries are loathe to use military intervention similar to last year's campaign in Libya to oust Moammar Gadhafi, fearing a backlash.

The White House said this week that such an assault risks leading to "greater chaos, greater carnage."

But for now, Syria can still count on the support of its allies China and Russia, which on Wednesday criticized the diplomatic moves.

"The banishment of Syrian ambassadors from the capitals of leading Western states seems to us to be a counterproductive step," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said. He said the move closes "important channels" to influence Syria.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday in Damascus to try to salvage what was left of his peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground.

Tensions have escalated as more information emerges about the May 25 killings in Houla.

The U.N.'s human rights office said most of the victims were shot execution-style at close range, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling.

The U.N. Security Council met behind closed doors Wednesday to hear briefings from Annan's deputy Jean-Marie Guehenno and U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice warned that a failure of Annan's peace plan could create a spreading conflict that creates "a major crisis" not only in Syria but also region-wide.

"And members of this council and members of the international community are left with the option only of considering whether they are prepared to take actions outside of the Annan plan and the authority of this council," she told reporters.

MTV Movie Awards Debut First-Ever Live Social Voting Category!

Fans can cast their vote in the new Best Hero category using hashtags on Twitter associated with the nominees — now through the June 3 show.
By John Mitchell

Fans of onscreen heroics should get their fingertips ready to tear up Twitter because that's where they'll be voting for their favorite onscreen do-gooder in the new category of Best Hero for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

Beginning Tuesday (May 29) and right on through to the live show on June 3, fans can vote and track the nominees for Best Hero, presented by Sprint, via Twitter using hashtags associated with the nominees. Is your favorite hero a contender?

Check out the nominees:
»Harry Potter, "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (#votepotter)
»Katniss Everdeen, "The Hunger Games" (#votekatniss)
»Thor, "Thor" (#votethor)
»Captain America, "Captain America" (#votecaptain)
»Jenko, "21 Jump Street" (#votejenko)

The new nods for "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games" and "21 Jump Street" add to those films' already hefty tallies. And the nomination for Katniss of "The Hunger Games," played by Best Female Performance nominee Jennifer Lawrence, pushes that film ahead of "Bridesmaids" to become the most-nominated film this year with nine nominations. The bump gives "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" seven different chances to walk away with the Golden Popcorn (and remember, the franchise still unbelievably has never scored the coveted Best Movie prize despite several nominations over the years).

"21 Jump Street" now has six chances come next Sunday's show, while the nods for "Thor" and "Captain America" give both of those films their lone nominations for this year's awards. Still, both movies will no doubt be serious contenders for next year's awards given the amazing success and acclaim of "The Avengers," which features the titular heroes in addition to Iron Man, the Black Widow, Hawkeye and the Hulk.

The winner for Best Hero will be presented with the Golden Popcorn statue during the live show on MTV, Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for Best Hero and your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET.

Panama Real Estate: Evictions | endhighbloodpressure.com

Introduction ? Our law company, Panama Lawful, sometimes gets queries about the eviction method in Panama for residential true estate. Below follows a brief summary from the approach and time frames concerned. This can be not authorized suggestions, just an outline of what exactly is concerned.

Applicable Legislation ? Regulation #93 dated 1973 will be the regulation that addresses residential actual estate leases in Panama. Some leases that will be excluded from coming under this law would be leases with following attributes:

* leases of rural residence
* leases of residence inside the reverted Canal Zone
* leases exactly where the lease is calculated from the day such as a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, boarding house, Inn, and so on.
* leases of residence mostly designated as vacation property where the term including any existing renewals in the lease is beneath 180 times
* leases whereby the federal government of Panama or its municipalities are events inside the lease arrangement. Nevertheless should they do appear inside the lease arrangement as the residence owner or landlord they can make use of the eviction provisions from the relevant law we?re coping with here.

Rental Values ? When the residential real estate in question has an first rent in surplus of $150 per month, the agreement can integrate rental raises as agreed to by the get-togethers in the lease arrangement.

Lease Phrase ? There is excellent independence allowed in picking a phrase for the lease as long as the rental worth is in excess of $150. There can also be provisions for extensions from the lease term too.

Lease Cancellation ? The tenant is permitted to cancel any residential lease on 30 times published notice.

Security Deposit ? Generally a security deposit equal to one months lease is submitted towards the Panama Housing Ministry, which is returned in the end of the lease unless of course the owner data files a declare for damages.

Eviction Proceedings ? This can be typically likely to consider one hundred twenty days. The gathering from the unpaid lease (if any) is going to choose about 270 times. When the workload with the court is large legal processes could acquire extended. Don?t program on it heading any quicker.

Summary ? The eviction course of action is actually a relatively long one. In numerous other countries it could even acquire for a longer time. Some nations which might be known for their significant quantities of homeless folks do have a lot more abbreviated eviction methods. Should you be renting to an expatriate one demands to bear in mind which they could up and decide to depart Panama sometime. When they do that discretely and never pay lease for his or her final couple of months here the landlord would endure. They could have their funds out with the country as well as all of their property. They may also have their property secreted in foundations and companies which you know nothing at all about thus keeping them immune out of your attaching them.

If you are a landlord and are concerned about leasing to foreigners get in touch with our legislation company and we should be able to design some protecting measure for you personally which are lawful.

When you are a landlord never interact in almost any self-eviction methods. Under no circumstances disconnect the electrical energy or drinking water, under no circumstances transform the locks and don?t determine that their entrance doors or windows will need painting on a Saturday evening and take away them for painting. Actuel could file counter promises in opposition to your lawful action and further prolong some time frames for eviction. Do seek capable lawful counsel.

FDA warns about counterfeit Adderall tablets

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that a counterfeit version of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug Adderall is being sold over the Internet.

The FDA says the product purports to be 30-milligram Adderall tablets, but it does not contain the right ingredients. The pills contain the pain drugs tramadol and acetaminophen instead. The agency says the counterfeit tablets are white and round, and they do not have any markings like letters or numbers. Genuine Adderall tablets are an orange/peach color and have the letters "dp" embossed on one side with the number 30 on the opposite side.

Adderall is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., and it is used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. The drug is in short supply because of shortages of the active ingredients.

Beetle flight: Flapping protective wings increase lift

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? The forewings of beetles, the elytra, are hardened structures which protect the insect's flying wings and body. The function of the forewings in flight has been questioned, which is what prompted researchers at Lund University's Department of Biology to study how the forewings and the underlying flying wings work in dung beetles. The researchers studied the air flow created by the wings when the beetles fly in a wind tunnel. The wind tunnel in Lund is one of a few of its kind in the world.

"The results show that the forewings, which are held out and flap during flight, generate lift, helping the beetles to stay airborne," says Christoffer Johansson Westheim, researcher at Lund University.

The study also shows, however, that the beetles are less effective at generating lift than other animals, as a result of their forewings negatively affecting their flying wings. Thus the protection afforded by the hardened forewings comes at a cost in the form of lower efficiency in flight. One conclusion to be drawn from this is that if the flying wings alone could provide enough power to keep the insect in flight, the forewings would fold back over the body while the beetle is flying, which is precisely what happens in some species. The study is the first of its kind on beetles, but the researchers consider that the results could apply generally to beetles whose flying wings flap behind forewings -- despite the fact that the dung beetles are a fairly extreme case, with a body weight of 5-7 grams and a wingspan of around 15 centimetres.

The beetles used in the current study were captured in South Africa, where they normally fly at night over open terrain, on the hunt for dung. Their flight speed is high and the dung beetles are hardly known for their manoeuvrability. They often miss the dung they are looking for and land some way away from it, but they prefer to walk the last distance rather than attempt a more accurate landing. The research study is part of a project aiming to understand the adaptations of various animals to flight, and how the animals' different origins affect their capacity to fly.

The researchers taking part in the current study are Christoffer Johansson Westheim, Sophia Engel, Emily Baird, Marie Dacke, Florian T. Muijres and Anders Hedenstr?m, all of whom work at the Department of Biology at Lund University.

As Layoffs Loom, RIM?s Chief Legal Officer Steps Down

office_5x3_med-resThere goes another one -- RIM announced today that Chief Legal Officer Karima Bawa will soon be leaving the company. This is RIM's second major departure in as many weeks, with RIM sales head Patrick Spence leaving the ailing smartphone maker last Wednesday. At the time, sources pointed to audio electronics company Sonos as his likely landing spot, though neither Spence nor Sonos have officially commented on the situation. Unlike Spence, who reportedly jumped ship after being passed over for the company's vacant COO spot (Sony Mobile EVP Kristian Tear eventually got the job), Bawa's situation seems much less contentious. After spending nearly twelve years with the company (two of which were in her current spot), she's finally looking to retire.

Cardinal among plotters in Vatican scandal?

Paolo Gabriele (bottom left), the pope's butler, was arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists.

By msnbc.com news services

VATICAN CITY --?The worst crisis in Pope Benedict's pontificate deepened on Monday when Italian media said at least one cardinal was among those suspected of leaking sensitive documents as part of a power struggle at the top of the Catholic Church.?The pope's butler, who has been arrested, has pledged to cooperate in the probe.?

Leading Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero reported Monday that the pope's butler ? arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists ? clearly did not act alone, and that an unidentified cardinal is suspected of playing a major role.?

The scandal exploded last week when within a few days the pope's butler was arrested, the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed and a book was published alleging conspiracies among the cardinals or "princes of the Church."

Vatican cops arrest pope's butler over leaked papers alleging corruption

However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports that a cardinal might be the next target of the "Vatileaks" probe. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted: "There is no cardinal under suspicion."?

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the pope's butler says his client has pledged "full cooperation" in the investigation and wants the truth to come out.?

On his final day in Cuba, Pope Benedict noted that the Cuban government has taken steps to allow greater freedom of religion, but still has room for improvement. Vatican analyst George Weigel talks about the Pope's message and his meeting with Fidel Castro.

The commitment by butler Paolo Gabriele to cooperate raises the specter that higher-ranking prelates may soon be named in the scandal. Leaks of confidential Vatican correspondence have shed light on power struggles and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church.?

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after documents he had no business having were found inside his Vatican City apartment. He remains in detention in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.?

The 46-year-old father of three was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders said they were baffled by his alleged involvement. Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, reported Monday that Gabriele was "very serene and calm."?

So far,?Gabriele?has been the only?one arrested, but Lombardi stressed that the investigation was continuing.?

Pope at Easter vigil: Technology without God is dangerous

The probe is working on two separate tracks. Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. Separately, Pope Benedict appointed three cardinals to form an investigative commission to look beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks.?

Those cardinals have the authority to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said, and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them.?

The Catholic Church accused the nation's largest organization of American nuns of espousing "radical feminist" ideas. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the charges with Sister Jeannine Gramick, who was once silenced by the Vatican, and Jeff Stone, communications director of Dignity USA.

They report directly to the pope, who Lombardi said, was being kept informed of the investigation.?

Like a Dan Brown book? Vatican allows mobster to be exhumed

Benedict has not commented directly on the scandal.?

Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators marched to St. Peter's Square on Sunday to demand information on Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican messenger who disappeared in 1983 at the age of 15.?

Various theories have surrounded her disappearance, linking her kidnapping to an attempt to free the Turkish gunman who shot John Paul in 1981, or to alleged Vatican financial dealings with a Rome criminal gang.?

The march came a day after an Italian prosecutor told CNN that a priest who used to run a church in Rome is under investigation on suspicion of complicity in her?abduction.

Xperia Play notably missing on Sony?s ICS upgrade list

Sony Xperia S owners weren?t all too pleased when they found out that the ICS upgrade for the flagship phone has been slightly delayed, but at least they will still be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich treat on their plate errm? phone. The same thing can?t be said about Sony Xperia Play at the moment; it has disappeared?inexplicably from the company?s list of eligible phones expected to receive Android 4.0.

Sony had promised that all Xperia devices released in 2011 will be getting ICS this year, therefore it?s quite odd to see the Xperia Play being singled out and removed from the list. The new list only covers the following phones now:?

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia Neo and Neo V
  • Xperia Mini and Mini Pro
  • Xperia Pro
  • Xperia Active
  • Xperia Ray
  • Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

Is this a typo or has Sony changed its mind about upgrading the Xperia Play to ICS? Sony has released an ICS beta ROM for the Xperia Play, ?so for now we?re leaning toward the former as the reason for the disappearance. Unfortunately, the usually informative support staff at Sony?s website?hasn?t?gotten back to us yet with a definitive answer; something that has never before been an issue for the dedicated team. Here?s hoping that the curious case of disappearing Xperia Play can be solved soon.

We?ll update this piece once we get more information. Our fingers are crossed that Sony Xperia Play won?t be left out from the ICS upgrade.

67 Year Old Fitness Fan Comments on Senior Health and Fitness ...

Look, I don't want to push pseudo-science on anyone, and I don't want anybody to think that a 67 year old guy who really likes to read and write about health, has some sort of fantastic insight on how to heal or prevent a terrible disease.

What I am doing, is scanning the news that's out there that seems to be valid, and trying to pass it on to those who might not have the time or inclination to root through all the news stories, myths, websites, and street-corner wierdos to get near the truth.

Here's a bit I recently uncovered. It's new research, so conclusions are not final, but, if making a diet change or taking a supplement which is not dangerous has the possibility of preventing or slowing Alzheimer's disease, I'm in.

A newly published study apparently showed that people whose diets contained the most omega-3 had the lowest blood levels of a protein known as beta-amyloid.

Beta-amyloid deposits are commonly found at autopsy in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. Several studies also suggest that high blood levels of the protein may predict Alzheimer's disease before memory loss occurs.

You can read the whole article here.

In the meantime, two Omega-3 supplements you might want to look at are the Hypercet Omega 3-6-9 Omega Supplement, and Omega Guard? from Shaklee.

Immigration Dogs King | Cafe Con Leche Republicans

Simplify illegal alien enforcement problem, by enacting it as a FELONY to enter this sovereign nation. This should have been run through our whimpering Congress long ago; instead they allowed pressure groups to influence them. This will not happen under a Tea Party Congress, that will stifle any new laws so illegal aliens can gain any kind of amnesty. Our laws are a travesty and are soft on punishment. Put businesses that don?t use E-Verify in mandatory jail, along by seizing assets and harsh fines. Award Whistle blowers who detect illegal aliens working in companies to ICE. Amend the Birthright Citizenship law so no children smuggled into the U.S. are only eligible for citizenship, if one parent is born in America or a naturalized citizen. This will discourage illegal migrants and immigrants arriving here as they have for decades, through neglect at our borders and other entry ports.

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO ALLOW MORE POVERTY ENTER THE UNITED STATES?

Employment visas should only be granted to professional people and STEM workers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workers to the U.S. in an expedited process. The Constitutional TEA PARTY is gaining in power and will unseat liberal Democrat-Republican pro-illegal immigration politicians, derailing open border zealot ideologies. Lastly we must oversee all elections, as Democrats are indifferent to illegal aliens voting, which is carefully hidden; surf the Internet for information on voter fraud and ID theft that has been gaining momentum in the last two decades. Read the latest regularizes by zeroing in on Florida.

Alabama, as Arizona and the 48 states are up against the wall of harsh forced unfunded mandates by U.S. courts. Every state is confronted by billions of dollars to pay for illegal immigration in public welfare. The cost to Alabama for Costs for Illegal Aliens as studied by The Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIRUS) it was $2.7 billion dollars owing to the growing illegal alien population. But of course nobody knows the true amount as figures for population and the costs to support these people are kept subdued. During the arguments between David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz about illegal immigration, a report overshadows the latest Census data indicates Texas?s illegal immigrant population is costing the state?s taxpayers more than $4.7 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. Even if the estimated tax contributions of illegal immigrant workers are subtracted, net outlays still amount to more than $3.7 billion per year.

The annual fiscal burden amounts to about $725 per Texas household headed by a native-born resident. But the majority of Americans are well aware that according to studies of FAIRUS and other pro-sovereignty organizations, that annually the expenditure is well over $113 billion dollars. In addition organizations have completed their own studies, that if another Amnesty was enacted we would raise our U.S. treasury deficit from 16 Trillion dollars, by another 2.6 trillion dollars. Many groups and media aspire to offer information about the movement and costs of illegal immigration into this country, but much is not factored in to taxpayer?s outlay and intelligence which can be found at the websites of American Patrol and NumbersUSA.

Sen. Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney had better stick to their principles, and they promised the taxpayer that passages of new negative immigration laws will not be tolerated, but only those in the best interests of the people. Americans are frustrated with the draining of their money to subsidize any person who crosses the border, including the escalation of births to illegal aliens and then claiming citizenship when the annual figure is 400.000. Any thoughts of gaining passage of Amnesty by either party will condemn the majority of states to even more need for health care treatments, hospital inpatients for dialysis and serious surgeries all for free. These are more costs dumped eventually on taxpayers of uncompensated care from the central government. Awarding education for hundreds of thousands of illegal children, who can claim citizenship under a very shaky law, which is destined to reach the Congress thanks to Rep. Steve King? In less than 15 years are schools are overrun by illegal children who cannot speak English, necessitating more time spent by teachers and therefore affecting the failing grades across the country in education.

Of all the politicians that must be thrown out of office, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada must go. Not only has he derailed a amendment to stop illegal aliens living in this country, receiving mostly fraudulent IRS child tax reimbursement, to the tune 0f 4.2 billion dollars, he has done nothing to halt the influx of foreign nationals occupying Nevada. The tired old lawmaker has guaranteed that those working in this country illegally will be sustain in receiving billions of dollars in tax reimbursement for children that are not even present in this country. He is responsible for stopping ICE from raiding the building construction sites, but clandestine inviting mass illegal aliens into the state. The TEA PARTY must adjoin to seat a new younger Senator leader in his place, as he is just one of the liberal-Democrats, involved in wrecking this country?s economic return.

By passing another Comprehensive Immigration Reform would devastate our economy. ICE prohibited programs as the Democrats Dream Act, the Sanctuary policies has its costs, to all taxpayers and further encouraging the exploitation of the American low income worker. Less enforcement also has a negative impact, as Obama administration stands down from proceeding with large scale ICE raids or the deportation of all individuals. Years of complete indifference by both political parties to securing the borders, interior ?seek and detain? has allowed large influxes of criminal illegal aliens, with many reentering time and time again. The fact that illegal alien expectant females are procuring even more billions of dollars in education and schooling for their children, if once stepping on to U.S. soil, or disguising their pregnancy when alighting from aircraft, with a design to take advantage of the ?Birthright Citizenship? law badly manipulated from its original intent.

There are obstacles in Congress by both sides of the aisle, but even so 59 bipartisan sponsors to amend this law. Similar is to mandate the very controversial E-verify bill, that instead of voluntary for businesses, so it becomes the rule of the land. That every business, no matter how large and small must authenticate their workers, showing they are eligible to work in the United States. This is a very strength of every voter, to stop the continuation of these wrongly enacted laws, to amend Birthright Citizenship, so one parent must be a U.S. citizen, by birth or naturalization. All voters must fight back and demand from your Senator or House Representative that E-verify must be implemented permanently and Birthright citizenship be amended.

Neither new law costs money, but will save absolutely billions in YOUR taxes. The controversial publicity around ?Chipotle? is typical of businesses that think they are above the law, when hiring workers. Cheap labor is for profiteers, who have no conscious hiring foreigners, when there are thousands of legal Hispanics who would in this recession; jump at a chance of a job? As an addition ?Secure Communities? is now a mandatory law, so all suspects taken into custody will have their fingerprints sent to Homeland Security and ICE. But we must push the idiots in Washington, to pass mandated E-Verify and the amendment to the Birthright Citizenship Act.

E-Verify as nationwide push of enforcement have a 98 % successful program, that detects foreign labor and unable to verify, they will start to expedite departure to their home countries. All these policies, rules and regulations is the agenda of the monumental growth of the Constitutional TEA PARTY splinter group of the Republican Party. Both entrenched parties are nervous of this rise of a national party, which they cannot control.

Time To Start Investing In Gold

My husband and I have been doing a lot of talking recently, and although gas prices here in the South seem to be going down, we think it maybe time to slowly start purchasing gold and silver. Once our legal tender is worth nothing, gold and silver will be worth a lot more than we would pay for it now, and well we maybe poor money wise at this time, our smarts might make us rich when the rich are poor.

When purchasing gold we have to purchase smart. We have to find the best deals for our money, and then we have to bury it in the backyard? Okay, maybe not bury it in the backyard. However, we have to be wise when we?re purchasing or it might hurt more than help. I have been looking at Golden Eagle gold bars, and really thinking about making a small purchase.

If we can purchase small amounts through out the years they will add up, and we all know the price of gold goes up not down, so this would be a very wise investment to make. Even if we are dead before our legal tender becomes no more. This would give our daughter a running start on having something.

Have you thought about purchasing gold, for that just in case?

Even if it?s not for the just in case, have you thought about investing in gold at all? I wish I had some gold right now to sell, I often go yard sales, to see if I might get lucky and find some gold. So far no luck!

Following the Ice: In the Beginning

The river crossing in May last year before the annual melt made it unpassable.

The river crossing in May last year before the annual melt made it unpassable.

Over the past few months I lost sleep almost every night thinking about Greenland. Polar bears and river crossings were always at the edge of my mind while lying in bed in Massachusetts. These thoughts sometimes kept me up till dawn. But the first night in my tent, I fell asleep instantly and slept well.

The morning I left, I loaded my car and took my dog on one last walk. When we got back she laid down next to the car and wouldn?t move, anxious about the large amount of gear in the car. The two of us set off for the airport?she took a flight to Minnesota where she?ll spend the summer with my parents and I left for Greenland.

After a night in Copenhagen and an amazing flight to Greenland (I was glued to the window watching the Greenland Ice Sheet), we landed in West Greenland in the town of Kangerlussuaq. While other towns in Greenland are composed of picturesque colorful houses clinging to the sides of fjords, Kangerlussuaq is more like an old army base. The town is, in fact, a former U.S. Air Force base, and life seems to revolve around the airport. That being said the town is exceptionally friendly, there are some good tourist shops, and if you like eating musk ox, this is the place for you. The animals are hunted and butchered locally and served at every restaurant. You can get musk ox burgers, musk ox pizza, and musk ox curry?my standard breakfast, lunch and dinner in town. It?s the kind of place where drivers wave at each other on the few roads, and it?s not uncommon to find employees at shops playing a game or goofing off when there are no customers.

At the airport I met my team, a scrappy group of young British graduate students and researchers. Everyone was carrying huge backpacks and wearing down jackets. All of us were excited to finally be at the start of the field season. Nice weather greeted us, the sun was shining, it wasn?t too cold, and the wind wasn?t blowing. After a compulsory musk ox burger at the airport, we began our many errands in hopes of heading to camp that day. We asked our contact at the Kangerlussuaq Science Support Center whether it?d been an especially warm spring and he looked at us slightly annoyed and said, no it?d been very cold, like usual. That afternoon as if to prove his point, it snowed for hours.

Our camp is about 15 miles as the crow flies from Kangerlussuaq. To get there we drive down a dirt road for about an hour and then turn onto a smaller road that ends at a river. Just before our turn-off we pass an old plane crash that?s spread over either side of the road. We?re told the plane crashed years ago when a fighter pilot couldn?t land because of bad weather, but that he ejected safely. At the end of the road is a river, and if it weren?t for this river, our camp would be much less isolated. As the melt season progresses, the river will swell with glacial meltwater and the ferry we?ve built?which consists of a small dingy, a static climbing rope and some pulleys?could become unusable. Last summer, icebergs the size of compact cars and a set of rapids kept us from crossing for over a month during peak melt. When we ran out of fuel for our generator and food for us, someone in town came out to our crossing, and using a rope we?d strung out above the river, transferred some essentials. If this happens again this summer, we?ll become even more dependent on our satellite phones and our wits.

After the river crossing, camp is an hour hike, over a riverbed and then up a long, steep hill covered in sand dunes. It?s never an easy hike and we typically have too much gear on our backs. Helicopters in Greenland are expensive and can be very hard to schedule, so much of our equipment, food and fuel, is hiked in.

Camp in May 2011

Camp in May 2011

Having spent almost four months living in our camp last year, I took my time hiking in this year. Very little had changed. I passed the caribou antlers I?d placed on a boulder, the musk ox mummy that marks the start of the hill climb, and looking across the valley I saw the large white rock I routinely mistook for a polar bear (which I did again this year). It felt like I?d never left and in fact I?ve only been gone nine months. I set my ?science tent? up in the exact same place and used the same rocks to secure it from the wind.

My science tent (which is currently keeping me sheltered from some freezing rain) is a hefty green dome tent where I live and work. I?ve tried to make it as comfortable as possible. My feeling is that the more comfortable my living situation is the more I?ll want to stay and work. To that end, I?ve hiked in a small worktable, a chair, and best of all, a little cot to sleep on. The tent?s dark green color even helps dim the arctic summer night. After a windstorm, dust and sand covers everything so I keep a small broom for sweeping (no shoes inside!). For electricity I?ve hiked in several car batteries that can be charged on solar panels or during the few hours a day we run the generator.

Like last season, I?ve taken my running shoes and clothes. Running over musk ox trails on the tundra next to the Greenland Ice Sheet is a memorable experience. The ground is soft, the peaks steep, and the views are spectacular. I usually run to the top of a small peak that overlooks the Greenland Ice Sheet where I?ve started a pile of rocks (one for each run). At the top, I stretch, shadow box and soak up the surroundings. It?s a much-needed respite from camp, a chance to be alone, and it makes me appreciate the immensity of the place. Back in camp after a run there are a few minutes I?m warm enough to take an ice-cold bucket shower. After about a week without a shower, I think most people start to miss being clean (and want to go home), so I suck it up, hold my breath, and convince myself to pour the burning cold water on my head.

Last year, the month of May was marked by frequent visits by very curious arctic foxes. We named an especially friendly one Foxy Prince (see previous post) and his ?girlfriend,? Foxy Princes. At one point Foxy Prince sauntered into our mess tent in the middle of dinner. When there is no one else for miles around it?s very unnerving to see someone else wander in. He looked at us as if surprised we weren?t expecting him, and then bolted back out the door. My favorite memory of Foxy Prince is the time he took a nap a few feet from me while I was playing guitar. My own dog hates my guitar playing and though she?ll lie down next to me, she whines incessantly (I swear I?m not that bad!). During the early part of last season Foxy Prince came by my tent every morning and woke me up. I think he?d figured out the location of the largest secret candy stash in camp.

I?ve yet to see any foxes yet, though we?ve heard their laughing bark and seen their tracks. It seems they?ve been replaced in camp by ravens?one woke me up this morning. He called a few times and then landed on top of my tent where he said something else, his odd call sounding like pebbles being dropped into a still pond. Ravens have managed to carry away tins of food and have even opened them up.

Also missing so far are musk ox?I?ve yet to see or smell any (sometimes you can smell them before you see them). Last year, hardly a day went by without seeing ?our herd? or ?Harold.? Harold being a satellite bull I often saw, usually while out on runs. Animal populations in the Arctic typically go through boom and bust cycles, so perhaps the past winter was a rough one or the heard has moved. I?d been looking forward to seeing Foxy Prince and the other animals again, in a way like seeing old friends, so I?m bit sad they?re not around yet.

Glaciers 101

A typical large load coming to camp last year and the way we typically brought it in.

In view from our camp and an hour hike away, is Leverett Glacier, a mid-sized, land-terminated glacier that spills off the Greenland Ice Sheet. Through there are other more accessible glaciers in Greenland (Russell Glacier for example), through years of work, we?ve learned that Leverett has a massive and definable catchment area, a single meltwater discharge point, and because it is moderately accessible in a fairly inaccessible country, we?ve chosen to study it extensively.

How glaciers melt and move is complex. Forced downhill by gravity, glaciers compress, deform, and slide while moving and crushing the rocks beneath them. Lakes of meltwater form on the ice surface and when the weight of the water becomes too great, the ice splits open, and can drain them in a matter of hours. During the early season before efficient meltwater channels develop under the ice, meltwater at the bottom of glaciers can physically lift the entire mass of ice and move it downhill. As this basal water (water at the glacier?s base) rushes beneath a glacier, it slowly breaks down and dissolves rocks and even supports a diverse community of microbial life that lives beneath the ice.

My work will focus on the chemistry of meltwater discharging from Leverett Glacier and my goal is to determine where the meltwater comes from and where it?s been. Some of the questions I?m interested in are:

??????? How long has the meltwater spent under the ice sheet?

??????? What percentage of the meltwater is derived from ice melted at the glacier?s base, how much is melted surface ice, and how much is snowmelt?

??????? Does friction cause more ice to melt at the glacier?s base when the glacier is accelerating?

??????? Do the types of subglacial meltwater flowpaths have an effect on the physical acceleration of glaciers?

??????? Will a warmer climate cause these glaciers to slide faster or slower?

??????? What are the weathering rates of the rocks beneath the glacier and can I estimate the amount of CO2 consumption via rock weathering occurring under the glacier?

??????? And finally, are subglacial environments conducive to methylating mercury, and if so is glacial meltwater is a source for methylmercury in the Arctic marine food web?

To answer these questions, I?m taking samples of the glacial meltwater river next to our camp at all hours of the day and night. The team is also taking many kinds of samples and each type is collected in a bottle specifically prepared for a particular analysis. We?ve also deployed a hefty arsenal of detectors, probes, and instruments into the river to monitor things like pH and electrical conductivity 24 hours a day. Extremely accurate GPS stations have been installed across the glacier and the Greenland Ice Sheet to monitor when and how Leverett Glacier moves. Data from the GPS stations will be compared with our chemical and physical observations at the river discharging from beneath the glacier. Hopefully we can synthesize all of this data and through lots of collaboration, put it all together.

Stay tuned for the next update! We?re only 10 days into the season and I?ve got over 70 more to go!

The term aerobics means using oxygen. It gives you more energy and makes you feel better about yourself. It will raise your heart rate and get blood and oxygen flowing more quickly around your body.

The goal of taking aerobics is to improve all elements of fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It comprises rhythmic exercise with stretching and strength training and is generally performed to music in a group that is being led by an instructor. These classes are often divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced. There are different routines and fitness goals for each of these classes.

The main reason that many people take up an aerobics class is to lose weight but aerobics classes can also be used to:

? Relieve stress
? Strengthen bones
? Prevent/lower high blood pressure
? Maintain appropriate weight for height and build
? Tone muscles
? Improve confidence and self esteem
? Relieve depression and lift your mood
? Maintain flexibility
? Fight the ageing process

A general aerobics routine usually lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. You will start your aerobics routine with a warm up, which takes about five minutes to complete. This warm up is usually done on the floor. After your warm up you will move onto stretches, which again will last about five minutes. These stretches are intended to lengthen muscles ready for your actual aerobics work out, which comes next. The actual routine will last about 35 minutes. Once you have completed your routine you will perform a cool-down exercise lasting roughly five minutes. This cool-down will gradually decrease in tempo allowing better circulation. Once your cool-down exercises have been performed you will be able to complete your final stretches.

There are two main types of aerobics that are based on the impact of the exercise. These are categorised as high impact and low impact. High impact is a very energetic performance that involves a lot of movement which will lift you off the ground such as jumping, hopping and jogging. A high impact practice will make your body release endorphins and serotonin, which make you feel refreshed and energised.

The second type of impact is low impact aerobics. These are floor based exercises that involve a lot of stretch movements. These low impact performances are good for people who are older, pregnant, with weak joints and who are recovering from surgery.

There are certain circumstances where aerobics is not advised and if you fit into one of the following categories then it is important that you do not undergo aerobics:

? You have a history of heart or respiratory problems
? You have problems with your joints
? You have recently had surgery, or are prone to or recovering from injury (high impact only)

If you are looking for a keep fit programme that you can easily fit into your busy life then aerobics could be the answer that you are looking for. Classes can usually be taken late in the evening and on weekends so that it doesn?t disturb your working day. It is also suitable for both men and women.
