LeBron James and the 6 Most Explosive Stars in the NBA

The best basketball player in the world is the league?s most explosive. Go figure.

Blessed with uncanny ability, James has exhibited fine form on the hardwood. You'd be hard-pressed to find better agility.

There's nobody better in the open court, nobody better inside five feet. When you think you've gotten around him for an easy bucket, he explodes into third gear to block your shot into the cheap seats.

In the past year, LeBron has put on a scoring clinic against the NBA and the world. He's certainly quieted the doubters who said he could be beat by letting him shoot outside jumpers. Now he ices teams with three-point barrages in the final minutes.

His game has evolved to a place where defensive schemes are null and void.

Easy to forget James looks like he came from straight out of a video game.?Even in America's most explosive sport, football, their GMs think LeBron could make it at tight end or safety.?

Nothing comes easy because the League MVP is that good.

Simply, the dude is beastly.

Mixed legacy of George W. Bush hovers over Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Where is George W. Bush?

The last Republican president was a no-show at the Republican convention this week. And the party that he led for eight years barely mentioned him ? or his record.

Nevertheless, Bush's fiscal legacy ? including hundreds of billions spent on two wars that helped balloon the federal deficit ? loomed large over the gathering, as Republicans tried to make the case that the GOP was the party of smaller government and restrained spending.

Paul Ryan, for one, even lumped Bush in with President Barack Obama, blaming both for the nation's tenuous fiscal condition.

"In a clean break from the Obama years, and frankly from the years before this president, we will keep federal spending at 20 percent of GDP or less," Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman from Wisconsin, said as he accepted the vice presidential nomination Wednesday.

The legacy of the Bush years complicates Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's case against Obama as both fight to win over an electorate frustrated by the nation's enormous debt and budget-busting deficits.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, likes to taunt Obama for presiding over the largest increase in the national debt of any U.S. president. It's up $5.3 trillion under Obama ? in large part because of the recession and expensive efforts to revive the economy.

But Bush's record isn't far behind with a $4.9 trillion increase over his eight years in office. Republicans unhappy with Bush's fiscal record often cite the Republican's financial industry bailout in 2008, a whopping $700 billion, as akin to stimulus and bailout programs under Obama. They seldom complain about his huge tax cuts, which also drove up the red ink.

"People soured on him, it's true," said Ranae Lentz, an Ohio delegate. "But we're not here to discuss what's old. We're here to discuss what's new."

Bush declined an invitation to appear at the convention, likely mindful of the need for the party to turn the page and the political headaches his appearance could have created for Romney in a race that polls show is close just 10 weeks before Election Day.

There are signs Bush fatigue lingers in the electorate. In May, a CNN/ORC poll found 54 percent of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of Bush. A recent Washington Post/ABC News poll found Americans still blame Bush more than Obama for the country's current economic problems, 54 percent to 32 percent.

Romney aides dismissed questions of whether Romney had worked to downplay Bush's legacy or had instructed convention speakers to limit references to Bush.

Few ? if any ? uttered his name.

That included his secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, whose formal speech got a rousing reception from the crowd.

Rice generally spoke of her own experiences and only indirectly praised him for a shift in the nation's approach to terrorism that endures today after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

"I will never forget the bright September day," she said. "From that day on, our sense of vulnerability and our understanding of security would be altered forever."

Delegates rose to their feet and cheered, a sign her eight years with Bush had not dampened the GOP's affection for her.

To be sure, Romney's convention planners made sure to give a respectful nod to the Bush family in a five-minute video that featured interview clips with Bush, and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and their wives. The crowd in the forum warmly cheered when the images of the father-and-son former presidents seated beside each other appeared on the video screens in the arena.

In the video, the elder Bush said of his son, "I think the thing I take pride in is the integrity." The younger Bush's wife Laura added: "I'm so proud of George."

Bush's brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was scheduled to address the convention Thursday.

"This election is about the future of this nation," he said in an excerpt provided in advance of his remarks.

Beyond the video and positive feelings from some delegates there were plenty of Bush-era reminders ? awkward ones.

Memories of his heavily criticized handling of Hurricane Katrina were revived by the uncanny timing of Hurricane Isaac's landfall in Louisiana nearly seven years to the day after the hurricane devastated New Orleans.

The large, fast-ticking "debt clock" prominent on the convention hall wall was as much a reminder of spending woes under a Republican administration as a Democratic one.

"Let's face it, George W. Bush didn't do us conservatives a lot of favors by the end of his administration," said James Smack, a Nevada delegate to the convention.

Others talked more fondly of Bush ? when asked about him.

"I have tremendous respect for President Bush," said Robyn Johnson of Wichita, Kansas. "He led our country during difficult times."

Bush is not the first past president whose mere name has had the potential to cause trouble for the nominee; both parties have struggled with how to handle recent former presidents.

In 2000, then-President Bill Clinton ? who had been impeached ? spoke at the Democratic National Convention but was marginalized by nominee Al Gore during the campaign.

Clinton's standing improved over time.

By 2004, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry had embraced Clinton's economic legacy. Next week, Clinton, who already is appearing in an ad for Obama, gets the main spotlight Wednesday night at the Democratic convention.

(AP) ? Isaac dropped unrelenting rain Thursday, flooding areas north and south of New Orleans, and officials had to scramble to evacuate and rescue people as waters quickly rose. Inside the city, the fortified defenses held and life began to slowly get back to some sort of normalcy.

Along the shores of Lake Ponchartrain near New Orleans, officials sent scores of buses and dozens of high-water vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as rising waters lapped against houses and left cars stranded. Floodwaters rose waist-high in some neighborhoods, and the Louisiana National Guard was working with sheriff's deputies to rescue people stranded in their homes.

To the east, evacuations were ordered in a sparsely-populated area as a lake dam threatened to break near the Mississippi-Louisiana border. Officials in Tangipahoa Parish, La., feared the water it would pour into the already swollen river would flood low-lying areas downstream. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said officials there would release water at the dam.

Even as Isaac weakened on its slow trek inland, it continued to spin off life-threatening weather including storm surges, inland flooding from torrential rain and potential tornadoes. Nearly half of Louisiana electrical customers lost power and another 150,000 were out in neighboring Mississippi.

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted a couple and their dogs early Thursday from a home in LaPlace, between the Mississippi River and Lake Ponchartrain, after storm surge poured into their neighborhood and local authorities called for help. The couple was taken to New Orleans and reported in good condition.

"The husband and wife and their two dogs were in an area where a lot of houses washed away," said Lt. Cmdr. Jorge Porto. "They used a flashlight inside the house as a signaling device, which made all the difference in locating them effectively."

The floodwaters "were shockingly fast-rising, from what I understand from talking to people," Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said. "It caught everybody by surprise."

A tow truck driver was killed Thursday morning when a tree fell on his truck in Picayune, Miss., just across the state line from Louisiana. Authorities said Isaac was causing heavy rain and strong winds at the time.

President Barack Obama declared federal emergencies in Louisiana and Mississippi late Wednesday, allowing federal aid to be freed up for affected areas.

Isaac arrived seven years after Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city's fortified levee system easily handled the assault.

"Unfortunately, that's not been the case for low-lying areas outside the federal system, in particular lower Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes," said Louisiana Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. "Hurricane Isaac has reinforced for us once again just how vulnerable these critical areas are. We must re-engage the Corps of Engineers on this."

Louisiana's Public Service Commission said 901,000 homes and businesses around the state ? about 47 percent of all customers ? were without power Thursday. Utility company Entergy said that included about 157,000 in New Orleans.

New Orleans' biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding. One person was reported killed, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

"Hopefully, as far as the city of New Orleans is concerned, the worst is behind us," Landrieu said Thursday.

But in Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over an 18-mile levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall to relieve the strain.

Officials rushed to evacuate more than 100 nursing home residents from Plaquemines Parish, an area with a reputation for residents hunkering down to weather storms and perhaps the hardest hit by Isaac. In this hardscrabble, mostly rural parish, even the sick and elderly are hardened storm veterans.

"I don't think we had to evacuate to begin with," said Romaine Dahl, 59, as he sat in a wheelchair. "The weather was a hell of a lot worse last night than it is now. And I got an idea that after all this is said and done they're going to say everything is over with, go on back home."

Other residents in the Riverbend Nursing and Rehabilitation Center were loaded into ambulances and taken to a nearby naval station. Residents had their names and birth dates attached to their shirts.

Josephine King, 84, handled the move well, waiting in a wheelchair. "I'm feeling good," she said.

By midafternoon Wednesday, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm. The Louisiana National Guard ceased rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, saying it felt confident it had gotten everyone out. There were no serious injuries. National Guard spokesman Capt. Lance Cagnolatti said guardsmen would stay in the area over the coming days to help.

Isaac's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 45 mph and the National Hurricane Center said it was expected to become a tropical depression by Thursday night, meaning its top sustained winds would drop below 39 mph. The storm's center was on track to cross Arkansas on Friday and southern Missouri on Friday night, spreading rain as it goes.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move farther inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend.

Even at its strongest, the storm was far weaker than Hurricane Katrina, which at its peak was a Category 5 and hit New Orleans as a Category 3. Isaac came ashore late Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, with 80 mph winds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It drove a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland. Because Isaac's coiled bands of rain and wind were moving at only 5 mph ? about the pace of a brisk walk ? the threat of storm surges and flooding was expected to linger Thursday as the immense system crawled across Louisiana.

In coastal Mississippi, officials used small motorboats Wednesday to rescue at least two dozen people from a neighborhood Isaac flooded in Pearlington. In addition, the National Weather Service said there were reports of at least three possible tornadoes touching down in coastal counties. No injuries were reported.

None of the reports had been confirmed. Until the weather clears, there is no way for survey teams to assess the area to determine whether damage was done by tornadoes or straight-line winds, said NWS Meteorologist Shawn O'Neil.

Back in New Orleans, the storm canceled remembrance ceremonies for those killed by Katrina. Since that catastrophe, the city's levee system has been bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements. The bigger, stronger levees were tested for the first time by Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

In Vermilion Parish, a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle ahead of the storm. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a crawl inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. New Orleans reported at about 10 inches in some places as rain continued to fall late Wednesday.

Samsung Ativ Tab and Ativ S details leak, hint a Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 power duo

Remember those Ativ Tab and Ativ S trademarks we saw just a couple of days ago? They may well be more than just Samsung's daydreams. As long as details at The Verge prove true, the devices attached to those names represent a two-pronged revival of Samsung's Windows-based mobile strategy. We're most interested in the Ativ S: thanks in part to Windows Phone 8's multi-core support, it's effectively a Galaxy S III for the Microsoft crowd with a similar 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front shooter. Swinging attention to the Ativ Tab shows what's likely to be a commonplace list of features for a Windows RT slate. Outside of the 10.1-inch screen, it's sporting its own 1.5GHz dual-core chip and 1.9-megapixel front camera as well as a 5-megapixel rear sensor, HDMI video out and USB. We're still missing a slew of details, such as storage and launch dates, although we might not have to wait long at all to know -- if the claims are correct, one or both of the Ativ models may show their faces at Samsung's IFA 2012 events.

Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation serves as Integration Core Lab for DeFACTO Study

MINNEAPOLIS, MN August 29, 2012 A study published in the most recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) presented encouraging news regarding physicians' ability to determine blood flow and associated coronary artery disease (CAD) using noninvasive CT scanning technology. Data from the Determination of Fractional Flow Reserve by Anatomic Computed Tomographic Angiography (DeFACTO) study were presented on August 26 at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich, Germany. John R. Lesser, MD, a Cardiologist and senior researcher at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, served as a principal investigator for the DeFACTO study and Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation Cardiologist and senior researcher Robert Schwartz, MD directed the Integration Core Lab coordinating data from 17 sites worldwide.

"The study showed improved diagnostic accuracy with CT scanning when we also use a new technique called fractional flow reserve that identifies the rate of coronary blood flow and possible blockages in the arteries that may interfere with flow," said Robert Schwartz, MD.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR) has been identified as a procedure that may help to reduce unnecessary angiography and stenting when used. It requires a minimally invasive procedure. FFR with CT scanning requires no invasive procedure and has the potential to deliver equally useful data.

The objective of the DeFACTO study was to assess the diagnostic performance of CT with and without FFR for diagnosis of significant coronary stenosis. In its conclusion, the use of noninvasive FFRCT among patients with CAD was associated with improved diagnostic accuracy and discrimination.

"DeFACTO is worthy of note because, while it did not achieve it's endpoint, it definitely showed improved diagnostic accuracy using FFRCT vs. CT alone," stated Schwartz. "We are always looking to use the least invasive procedures to get the best results and DeFACTO indicates that we may soon have another useful tool in evaluating and treating heart disease."

In an editorial in JAMA, Manesh R. Patel, MD, Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke University Medical Center, wrote, "The current report describes an important noninvasive technology that may improve existing care and has the potential to outperform established noninvasive technologies."

DeFACTO is a multi-center diagnostic performance study involving 252 stable patients with suspected or known CAD from 17 centers in 5 countries who underwent CT, invasive coronary angiography (ICA), FFR, and FFRCT between October 2010 and October 2011. The primary study outcome assessed whether FFRCT plus CT could improve the per-patient diagnostic accuracy. Among study participants and compared with obstructive CAD diagnosed by CT alone, FFRCT was associated with improved diagnostic accuracy and discrimination.

Scientists probe mysterious origins of humongous star explosions

Super-luminous supernovas, the biggest known explosions in space, remain shrouded in mystery. But scientists are beginning to understand their origins, which could help explain the creation of heavy elements in the early universe.

By Charles Q. Choi,?SPACE.com Contributor / August 24, 2012

Gamma rays detected by NASA's Fermi space telescope show that the remnant of Tycho's supernova shines in the highest-energy form of light. This portrait of the shattered star includes gamma rays (magenta), X-rays (yellow, green, and blue), infrared (red) and optical data.

The most powerful exploding stars in the universe are still cloaked in mystery, but some are now yielding the secrets of their origins, scientists say.

Research is also shedding light on gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe, up to a million times brighter than a supernova, scientists added.

The most powerful star explosions are supernovas, which are bright enough to briefly outshine all the stars in their galaxies. There are two known ways supernovas occur ? a Type Ia supernova arises when one star piles fuel onto a dying star known as a white dwarf, and a Type II supernova happens when the core of a massive star runs out of fuel, collapses to an extraordinarily dense nugget in a fraction of a second and then bounces and blasts its material outward.

In the past 12 years, scientists have detected a new class of supernovas, ones about two to 100 times brighter than all the others. These so-called super-luminous supernovas apparently come in three different flavors, only one of which is well-understood. [Amazing Supernova Photos]

The rarest but seemingly best-understood of these super-luminous, or super-bright, supernovas are the radioactively powered SLSN-R. These supernovas seem to arise from the collapses of stellar cores, and apparently also each involve huge amounts of a radioactive isotope of nickel in those dying stars, enough to equal several times the mass of the sun. As this radioactive material decays, it releases energy in the form of gamma rays and antimatter that makes the expanding material from the supernova glow.

The way this radioactive nickel is created remains hotly debated. One possibility is that it gets forged during the collapse of stellar cores; the other is that it is created in nuclear reactions involving oxygen in very massive stars, said study lead author Avishay Gal-Yam, an astrophysicist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

Probably the most observed type of super-luminous supernova is the hydrogen-rich SLSN-II. They apparently typically emerge from stars that possess thick hydrogen envelopes, which veil their light and make it difficult to say what causes these explosions. They may get the boost in brightness from a number of culprits, such as newly formed black holes, which rapidly suck matter into themselves, or magnetars, which are rapidly spinning neutron stars with powerful magnetic fields ? either of these possibilities might disrupt the hydrogen tremendously, with luminous effects.

"SLSN-II are technically Type II supernovae, but are unlikely to be the same as common Type II supernovae that come from exploding red supergiant stars," Gal-Yam said. "The properties of SLSN-II cannot be matched by any red supergiant we know ? they must have different progenitors."

Britain concerned at report of new Syria massacre

AMMAN (AP) ? Britain said Sunday it was deeply concerned by emerging reports of a "brutal massacre of civilians" in a Damascus suburb where activists claim more than 300 people have been killed over the past week in a major government offensive to take back control of rebel-held areas in and around the capital.

The British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 32 more dead bodies were found in the streets of Daraya on Sunday and that they had been killed by "gunfire and summary executions." Among them were three women and two children, the group said. It put the toll for the past week at at least 320.

Another activist group, The Local Communication Committees, claimed 300 bodies were discovered Saturday in Daraya and 633 people have been killed there since the government launched its assault last week.

President Bashar Assad, in comments carried by state media, reiterated his long-standing claim that a foreign plot was behind the uprising against his rule and said he would not allow it to succeed "whatever the price might be."

Britain's Middle East Minister Alistair Burt, meanwhile, said if confirmed, the massacre "would be an atrocity on a new scale requiring unequivocal condemnation from the entire international community." He added that it "highlights the urgent need for international action to bring an end to the violence, end this culture of impunity and hold to account those responsible for these terrible acts."

Burt said he had discussed the killings with U.N. and Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

It is impossible to independently verify the death tolls for the town because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict. However, activists and residents have reported excessive use of force by the regime in major battles, with indiscriminate shelling from the ground and the air.

The LCC said some of those killed by regime forces in Daraya were buried in mass graves on Sunday. Video footage posted by the group showed bloodied bodies wrapped in colorful blankets lying next to each other with branches of date palms strewn over them.

Another video posted on the Internet and dated Saturday shows dozens of bodies on the floor of a mosque in Daraya. Most of the bodies are bloodied and wrapped in blankets. The anonymous commentator said there were at least 150 bodies there and blamed a pro-government militia known as shabiha for the killings. The authenticity of the two videos could not be independently confirmed.

On Thursday, troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships stormed Daraya after intense shelling and fighting that lasted days.

The battle for Daraya showed the regime to be struggling to control Damascus and its suburbs though the firepower available to it is far superior than anything the rebels might have. Government forces are stretched thin, with a major ongoing battle for control of the nation's largest city, Aleppo in the north, as well as smaller scale operations in the east and south.

On Sunday, regime forces also used helicopter gunships and tanks to pound rebel-held areas in the northern city of Aleppo and the restive southern town of Daraa along the Jordanian border. The Observatory said it had reports of fatalities, but did not have exact numbers yet.

Activists say more than 20,000 people have died in 17 months of fighting in Syria, as an uprising that started with peaceful protests against Assad's rule has morphed into a civil war.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, several thousand Syrians gathered at Bab al-Salameh border crossing, having fled airstrikes in their northern towns and villages. They squatted on the sidewalks of three large hangars once used for cargo inspections of trucks. Some said they had been there a week or more.

Mohammed Abdel-Hay, 41, said his family of seven fled the village of Marea after a regime warplane bombed it last week, destroying a house and killing two people.

"They shelled us and we didn't leave. They hit us with helicopters and we didn't leave. Then they brought warplanes than drop huge bombs that destroy entire houses and we left," he said.

Since then, the family had staked out a patch of sidewalk where they sit on a plastic mat with a few grain sacks full of clothes.

Mustafa Khatib, 40, a middle school principal from the same village, said he, his wife and their five children had fled about the same time and been staying in the hangar since.

The hangar had only one set of latrines, which the women and children used, so the men used nearby fields. Water was short, meaning he hadn't showered in a week, and all he'd eaten all day was a piece of bread and a hardboiled egg brought by a local Syrian aid group.

Like most of the families, he hoped to get into a refugee camp in Turkey, but had been told there was no room.

"We'll stay here and wait and see," he said. "Every day, we ask and they tell us today or tomorrow, but they've been saying that for a week and we're still here."

In Damascus, Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa appeared in public for the first time in several weeks for a meeting with a senior Iranian official, ending rumors that he had defected. Reporters saw him get out of his car and walk to his office for a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of Iran's powerful parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy.

There have been a series of high-level defections from the Assad regime in the past few months.

Al-Sharaa was last seen at the funeral of four top security officials killed in a blast in Damascus on July 18. Since then, there had been rumors that he defected to Jordan, though al-Sharaa's office and Jordan repeatedly denied he defected. He was seen at the door of his office, shaking hands with Boroujerdi, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene. He said al-Sharaa looked serious and steered away from reporters covering the meeting. He did not make a statement.

Pan-Arab satellite channel Al Arabiya reported that air force intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Hassan had been assassinated, but a senior government official denied it. The official insisted on anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the media. The Al Arabiya report said Hassan, a powerful member of Assad's inner circle and religious Alawite minority, was shot dead Saturday by one of his aides who defected to the opposition.

Addounia TV, a pro-Syrian government channel, also denied the report. It said Hassan is "fine and the news about his killing is absolutely untrue."

In neighboring Jordan, officials say the country is bracing for a mass exodus of Syrians in the wake of intensified fighting.

Jordan appealed for increased international assistance to 160,000 Syrian refugees it is hosting. Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah said the refugee influx has swelled even further, with more than 2,300 Syrians crossing into Jordan on Friday ? the largest arrival in a single day since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in March 2011.

"The number of refugees is growing and our limited resources are thinning," Maaytah said. "The international community should come to the aid of the Syrian refugees."

The United Nations refugee agency said it has yet to secure half of the $190 million aid appeal launched earlier this year to support Jordan and other countries hosting some 200,000 registered Syrian refugees.

Jordanian police spokesman Col. Mohammed Khatib said a Syrian rocket fell in the northern border town of Ramtha late Saturday, but no injuries were reported. It was the seventh rocket to fall in Jordan in five days, underlining the intensity of the army assault on southern Syrian towns such as Daraa, the birthplace of the uprising against Assad.

A police statement said 200 Syrian refugees pelted stones on Jordanian security guarding their desert camp late Saturday, wounding several policemen. The refugees were protesting poor conditions at the camp.

Quentin Tarantino, Richard Kelly Pay Tribute to Director Tony Scott ...

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Richard Kelly were brought together Friday at the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood by Jeff Goldsmith of The Q&A podcast and Backstory digital magazine to remember the life and career of director Tony Scott. The tribute, titled ?Writing for Tony Scott,? featured a discussion and screenings of True Romance and Domino, Scott films penned by Tarantino and Kelly, respectively.

In a theater packed with film students and movie fans, Goldsmith made the announcement that Scott had been buried earlier that day. Less than a week after Scott took his own life by jumping from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, the mood in the theater could easily have been somber, but the audience erupted with cheers and applause as the lights went out and ?A Tony Scott Film? flashed onscreen and the opening bars of Charlie Sexton?s ?Graceland? heralded the beginning of the director?s gritty fairy tale True Romance.

After the credits rolled, Goldsmith brought out guests of honor Kelly and Tarantino to discuss their experiences writing and working for Scott.

Tarantino admitted he was pleased to see the outpouring of support and love immediately following Scott?s death. ?One of the things that?s actually been kind of gratifying about reading all of this Internet stuff, where everyone?s talking about their favorite Tony Scott movie and stuff, is people were not saying that in 1990,? he said. ?People used to [say] ?Oh, he?s a commercial hack. His stuff is bullshit.? And I loved his shit. I thought it was fantastic.?

True Romance has achieved cult status and is beloved today, but Goldsmith recalled that the film was actually besieged by detractors and negative reviews when it was released. ?Even when True Romance got good reviews, they wouldn?t give Tony the credit for the good reviews,? Tarantino added. ?They would actually say that he glossed up my script ? that he made it too pretty. He made it too vivid.?

Tarantino went even further, comparing Scott to another director who didn?t receive the appreciation he deserved during his lifetime. ?He?s just like Douglas Sirk, man. Douglas Sirk never got any respect in the ?50s,? he said. ?His movies were considered too commercial. Everybody put him down and now they teach classes on him.?

When Goldsmith asked Tarantino about Scott?s restructuring of his original True Romance script, the influential writer/director downplayed the changes. ?It was so easy to restructure that I think they just did it with a Xerox machine,? Tarantino joked before hinting that an alternate cut of the film, which follows the structure of his original draft, is rumored to exist. ?From what I?ve heard, he tried my structure but went nuts with it ? went far beyond what I did. So apparently there?s this really metaphysical avant-garde cut of True Romance floating around out there somewhere.?

Speaking of avant-garde, Scott had been a fan of Kelly?s Donnie Darko, and brought the young director in for a meeting when the conversation finally turned to Domino, a project Scott had been trying to get off the ground for more than 10 years. Kelly described his experience writing for Scott as very collaborative. ?Usually the screenwriter isn?t really welcome on set or he?s sort of only invited on certain days or it?s a very ?keep your distance? sort of a situation, but this was the opposite,? Kelly recalled. ?It was a wonderful, wonderful experience.?

Known for his over-the-top visual style, Kelly explained that Scott inherently understood that cinema is about the overall experience for an audience. ?I remember that in a movie like The Fan, people would complain, ?When it rains at night, they cancel the baseball game,? and Tony was like, ?I don?t care. I want it to be raining.? He understood that they?re movies, and it?s about the experience.?

?It?s easy to talk about Tony and just get lost into the whole visual thing,? Tarantino continued, ?But Tony was one of the best director of actors that there was. Him and Denzel Washington?s relationship was one of the best actor/director combinations of our time.?

As prominent directors in their own right, Goldsmith asked about the experience of writing for a director like Scott. Tarantino admitted that his version of True Romance would have been more cynical, and Christian Slater?s character Clarence would have died at the end. ?I wanted to do that. I wanted to make you fall in love with Clarence and then I wanted to blow his fucking head off. I wanted to do that to you,? Tarantino said, gesturing to the crowd. ?Tony didn?t want to do that to you.?

?He fell in love with Clarence and Alabama, and it became ? in fact, I think he loved them even more than I did,? he continued. ?I think I took them for granted a little bit because Clarence was kind of me, so I could be brazen with me. I could blow my head off and that would be kind of a punk-rock move. Tony loved him and Tony loved Alabama, and it was very important to him that they get away.?

Tarantino admitted he had accused Scott of ?wimping out for commercial bullshit? when he changed the script to give Alabama (played by Patricia Arquette) and Clarence a happy ending, but the director held firm. Launching into a vivid Scott impression, Tarantino said: ?Quentin, I?m not doing it to be a commercial fuck, I?m doing it because I love those fucking kids.?

Kelly also recalled Scott having a similar sensibility while the pair worked on Domino. ?I?m someone who ? I kill all my characters. My movies are depressing and confusing and esoteric and they test horribly, and I?m basically the worst nightmare for like a studio test audience,? he said. ?So it was great to get that endorsement from Tony, that while we were holding on to the radical nature of the screenplay, we could have a happy ending that was still honest and it was earned.?

Goldsmith wondered whether working with Scott had influenced either director and, if so, what they had learned or taken from him. ?For me, it was the importance of research. Tony was a meticulous researcher,? Kelly said. ?I?d never seen anyone push that deep into the research, and it was amazing. I carry that with me forever now.

Tarantino admitted that while his own style is often diametrically opposed to Scott?s, he appreciated the director?s visual aesthetic, and he even went to him for advice after his 2007 feature Grindhouse flopped. ?I felt like the planet Earth broke up with me,? Tarantino said, explaining that Scott was there to console him.?Just remember how lucky you are,? Tarantino recalled Scott saying, ?How lucky you are that you got to make the movie you wanted to make and you got to make it the way you wanted to make it. People backed you. People supported you and you did it.?

At one point in the evening, Goldsmith read a quote from Scott that can be heard on the commentary track of Domino, which reflected many of the characters the director brought to life in his long and impressive filmography: ?I?m always attracted to people going to the dark side who manage to get back and when they get back, they?re different human beings, but having touched those places, it makes them interesting people.?

The entire ?Writing for Tony Scott? discussion will be made available through Goldsmith?s podcast The Q&A.

Gonzalez homers in debut, Dodgers beat Marlins 8-2

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer on the second pitch he saw in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform, and Andre Ethier tied a franchise record with his 10th straight hit in an 8-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

Clayton Kershaw pitched three-hit ball over eight innings for the new-look Dodgers, hours after they acquired Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett in a blockbuster trade with Boston.

Ethier and Mark Ellis also went deep for Los Angeles.

Gonzalez, a four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove first baseman, batted cleanup between Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez, with Ethier dropped to sixth despite his four hits and four RBIs in Friday night's 11-4 win over the Marlins in the series opener.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: 'Don't I Have a Right to Be Angry?'

I frequently hear this question from my counseling clients: "Don't I have a right to be angry? I have been betrayed (or hurt) and it seems to me that I certainly have a right to be angry in this situation."

My answer is, "Yes, of course you have the right. But what's the point? Is your anger working for you to get you what you want?"

We always have the right to feel whatever we feel. We also have the right to express anger when we feel hurt or betrayed. However, the real question is not whether you have the right, but whether or not your anger is working for you.

Samantha asked this same question in her first Skype session with me. Over two years ago, Samantha had discovered that Brad, her husband of 12 years, had been having numerous affairs. She was devastated, and her response was anger. Two years later she was still angry, and even though Brad had been in therapy for sexual addiction and was no longer having affairs, she was miserable.

"Samantha, what are you hoping for by being angry?"

"I want Brad to feel REALLY awful about what he did so I can be sure he will never do it again."

"So you are punishing him, hoping to have control over him?"

"Yes, I guess that's what I'm doing. I don't want to be hurt like that ever again."

"Since you can't be certain he will never do this again, why have you decided to stay in the relationship?"

"I love him and we have two children."

"So the purpose of your anger is to control him and protect you from feeling your heartbreak and helplessness over him?"

"Well what should I do? Just forgive and act like nothing happened?"

"Samantha, is what you are doing making you happy? Is it bringing you joy? Is it healing your marriage?"

"No, I feel awful most of the time."

"The fact is that this happened, and you can't make it not have happened. And it was heartbreaking for you. You actually have only two viable choices if you want to feel better: You need to accept that Brad did this and is attempting to heal his underlying issues, or you need to get a divorce. The only way you can truly accept it is to stop taking his behavior personally, and learn to manage your feelings of heartbreak and helplessness over him. Anger is generally a cover-up feeling -- covering over deeper, painful feelings such as heartbreak and helplessness over others."

"How can I not take it personally? He did this to me."

"No, he did it out of his own fears, just as you are angry due to your fears. He abandoned himself by having affairs, and now he is learning and healing. You are abandoning yourself by trying to control him with your anger, and hopefully now you will also learn and heal. What would happen if you decided to not take his behavior personally?"

"I would still feel heartbroken."

"Yes, of course you would. And your heartbreak is stuck inside, being blocked and covered over by your anger. Right now, breathe into your heartbreak and let yourself fully feel it. Bring deep kindness, tenderness and compassion to your heartbreak."

Samantha started to sob deeply. I kept reminding her to be very gentle with herself. After awhile, the sobs subsided and Samantha looked relieved.

"How are you feeling now?"

"Better. I've needed to cry like that for a long time. I can see that the anger stopped the pain."

"Samantha, each time the heartbreak comes up, instead of getting angry and covering it up, bring compassion to this very painful feeling and let it release as you just did. How are you feeling about Brad right now?"

"I actually feel some compassion for him too. He had a devastating childhood with no love at all and I'm so glad he is working on his own healing now. He really is a good guy who made some bad mistakes and hurt both of us. And now I've been hurting him with my anger. I don't want to do that anymore."

"I'm very glad to hear that. Compassion for yourself and him will bring about healing, while anger will continue to hurt both of you. Are you willing to begin practicing compassion for yourself and him?"

"Yes!"

Samantha did practice compassion and things began to change between her and Brad. Eventually Brad joined us in conjoint Inner Bonding Skype sessions and was able to learn to have compassion for himself and Samantha. Brad saw that his affairs were a way of trying to get the love that he didn't receive as a child. He saw that he had been treating himself as his parents had treated him -- abandoning himself with much self-judgment, which resulted in his sexual addiction. Sex had become his way of avoiding feeling his painful feelings, just as anger had become Samantha's way of avoiding hers. As both Brad and Samantha learned to be move loving to themselves, they were better able to share their love with each other. Their marriage is healing.

How do I end the twin soul separation and struggle phase?

Even though you have met your twin soul, there are no guarantees that everything will work smoothly from that day on. (Luckily, there?s also no guarantees that it won?t!) The separation phase is often explained by karmic debt, but we have a different idea on that. This post applies to both twin souls who have already met and those who haven?t met yet.

The old school new age teaches that to make it possible for twin soul couples to be together, they have to be free of all karma. That is a troublesome concept for two reasons. One has to do with non-automatic reincarnation which makes karma unnecessary, secondly, and more importantly, if you look at twin soul couples who are happily together? Do we trust all of them have ?made good? all their bad deeds? I can?t even begin to imagine the amount of bad karma the normal smugness of having found your twin soul the thinking pattern ?this is the reward for my good deeds and high soul age level? would rake up. Your twin soul isn?t a reward for good behaviour or ?enlightenment?, you better get away from that thinking because it?s simply not healthy. If you understand karma in the context that you don?t exactly have to do anything to clear it, but just ?live it through? this makes you sit and wait for some indefinite time frame until you feel it?s right? Or not.

What happens has everything to do with psychology and the law of attraction. If you understand the basis of the law of the attraction, in short, in this context, it can be summed up as ?you get what you believe you deserve?. If deep down you think that you don?t deserve to be loved, the settling karma -thinking would allow you to get around it by ?I have now suffered enough to deserve happiness in the end.? Your time would be better spent on self-improvement, self-empowerment, and clearing your mind from defeating attitudes and negativity. You don?t need to do this in the context of twin souls, but any normal psychologist will be able to help you here. If you are not that way inclined, any life coaching resource might help you, self-help books and simple self-reflection as to what are the reasons that you feel your twin soul doesn?t, can?t or won?t love you, or why you can?t find him in the first place. (It sounds like a different thing if you have met your twin or not but both situations are related. If you haven?t met your twin soul yet, it?s simply because you believe things like this don?t happen to people like you.)

?Get ready for love? does sound a lot simpler than ?align myself with my twin soul? doesn?t it? When you think about it this way, you may have a bit of a chuckle. We do like to mystify things, don?t we? :p The truth is that the twin soul relationship is mysterious and complicated enough as it is, we don?t need to complicate it further. I believe the mystification comes from the need to explain to others that ?my love is bigger than your love?, and although all of us know the difference when it?s your true twin, we also know that people who haven?t experienced this have absolutely no clue. Sorry I am rambling.

What we must do for ourselves before our twin soul relationship can work we need to get rid of any insecurities, doubt and bitterness we might harbour. These things don?t obstruct normal relationships because we are not as afraid of screwing it up and being told that we are no longer loved. There?s nothing more mysterious to it than that. The twin soul connection will freak out even the most confident of us, and put us face to face with our own failures. We must work on our self-esteem, to learn exactly what is keeping us from either giving love or accepting love. Please note that if one of you is perfectly fine with who they are, the other one will have SO MUCH EASIER TIME accepting your relationship even if they hadn?t worked on their issues yet. This happens, because a person who is happy within themselves will never have to retort. They can take rejection, blow ups, fuck ups and all the fury of Hell from their twin flame and not blink, and unless the twin soul is absolutely torn to pieces by their personal experiences, this is usually enough to keep them together and the hurting twin will be able to heal themselves with the help of the whole one.

To fast track your own healing, it would be a great idea to seek counselling from a relationship life coach or a psychologist. These are very practical solutions to what seems to be a mysterious problem but really isn?t. Remember that all-consuming love is not the privilege of only those who hold new age beliefs. There is also nothing telling that you shouldn?t seek couple?s therapy if you are struggling to hold onto each other.

For the cheap, ;) the DYI folk and those who like things mysterious, you need to be very courageous in looking into your own psyche and finding out your own issues for yourself. I would highly recommend you contacting your soul and ask help in clearing out your internal drama. If you ask this, remember that the answers you hear will be what you NEED to hear, not what you want to hear, and even if it didn?t make sense, keep going and TRY to make sense out of it. I would suggest the pendulum for this as a tool.
