Assistant Director Tax - HigherEdJobs

The Assistant Director of Tax is a key member of the University's tax office and will be responsible for providing direction for taxation for the University. S/he is responsible for fostering a collaborative and service-oriented approach to tax policies and procedures in support of the mission of the University. The Assistant Director of Tax reports to the Tax Director in the Office of the Controller and manages the tax office staff. The Assistant Director of Tax is responsible for the guidance and oversight of tax reporting and tax compliance for the University. S/he plays an important role in relationships with University divisions and department as well as collaboration with Johns Hopkins Health System for a variety of joint ventures activities that generate unrelated business income.

The Assistant Director of Tax will be an individual with exceptional accounting and tax skills who can serve as a key contributor to the finance team at the University. S/he will embrace collaboration and teamwork, transparency and open communication. S/he must work at the highest levels of integrity and honesty, and create strong and enduring collaborative relationships throughout the University. The Assistant Director will be an inclusive consensus-builder leading thoughtful discussions and involving others in the policy-making process as appropriate.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the job

  • Assist the tax director in the oversight of federal and multi-state tax compliance as well as multi-state business registrations
  • Manage and coordinate the preparation of the Forms 990 and 990-T including multi-state tax returns and prepare schedules for the IRS Forms 990 and 990-T
  • Compile and review state allocations from IRS Forms K-1 for partner's share of income, deductions, credits, etc.
  • Analyze contracts and agreements for services to determine whether there is unrelated business income working
  • Collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Health System tax staff for tax matters related to joint ventures
  • Research technical tax matters on a variety of tax topics
  • Supervise, manage, develop, coach and mentor staff
  • Innovate processes both within the tax office and those related to customer service/relations
  • Review and compose policies and procedures as well as related training materials and provide training to divisions and departments
  • Other duties as assigned by the Tax Director

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or other related field is required. Advanced degree preferred. i.e. MBA Finance or other related discipline.
  • CPA required
  • Minimum of seven years progressively responsible experience in accounting and tax is required. Prefer 8 - 10 yrs related experience.
