WorkOne offers several programs to assist job seekers

The Indiana Region 8 WorkOne office located in Linton is dedicated to helping ensure everyone able has a job in the area.

Career Counselor Valerie Abshire said she and her staff work in groups through the classes offered at the WorkOne office and also on an individual basis to help job seekers reach their maximum potential.

"WorkOne is probably the single most important stop a job seeker or changer can make. Whether you are unemployed, laid off or currently employed and looking to change careers," Abshire said.

Abshire stressed the importance of helping individuals and families get back on their feet in order to create more productive citizens.

"Every person who develops a salary, creates job prospects or lets us help them get back to school is an economic developer," Abshire stressed.

To begin a job search, Abshire said the first step is to come into the WorkOne office, located in the Linton Shopping Center, for a short orientation session. The job seeker can then be set up with a career advisor immediately or set up an appointment within the next two to three days.

"If you've got 15 minutes on your way home from Walmart and you want to stop in to get started, we will work around your schedule," Abshire said.

There are five career advisors, two of whom are training specialists, and one is a Veteran's representative. Anyone over the age of 65 who is looking for a job can work with the AARP representative.

Abshire stressed these services are not only offered to people who are receiving unemployment insurance benefits.

"Any job seekers can request to meet with a career advisor, and we can discuss their circumstances, needs, goals and help them to create an individualized goal," Abshire said. "A lot of people have an extended period of unemployment. Let us work with you to figure out what is stopping you so you don't feel so alone."

There are also group classes available each month to help job seekers build their potential to enter the work force.

The first Wednesday of the month is a Creating Your Resume workshop at 9 a.m. and a Healthy Lifestyles workshop at 2 p.m. The second Wednesday is a Budgeting and Financial Literacy workshop at 9 a.m. and Interview Skills at 2 p.m. The third Wednesday is a Work Readiness workshop at 9 a.m. and Job Search Techniques at 2 p.m. The last fourth Wednesday of the month is a Career Interest and Indiana Career Explorer workshop at 9 a.m. and Introduction to Federal Employment at 2 p.m.

The workshops are free, and those interested just need to call to reserve a spot.

There are also computers available at the WorkOne office to aid in the job search. She noted some customers just stopped in to use the computers, but she suggested getting individualized help would be the most effective.

Abshire added many people have not taken the time to assess their own skills and understand the right path for them. To address that issue, she suggested those looking for a new career should visit www.onetonline.org.

Patrons can also take free classes at the WorkOne office to prepare for their GED test.

Abshire said she has had customers who are dedicated to their job search, and while they had set backs along the way, they never lost hope.

"We can't work miracles, but we can walk the road with you. We are invested in your success ... I've seen people get frustrated, but with the help of a career advisor they don't lose momentum. They don't lose hope. They are frustrated, but they didn't lose hope and they are now employed," Abshire said.

She added one reason she feels the Linton WorkOne location has been successful in getting local residents back on their feet is because of the dedication of the staff.

"They (advisors) get very excited about this," Abshire said.
