How to Survive the Perils of New Year's Eve [Video]

How to Survive the Perils of New Year's EveNew Year's Eve might be the best party night of the year, but it can also be the most stressful, from losing your phone to the far more perilous drive home. Here are a few things you can do now to stay safe and sane this New Year's.

Install a "Find My Phone" App Just In Case

How to Survive the Perils of New Year's Eve Try as you might, the chaos of New Year's Eve is a breeding ground for lost and stolen phones. There's not much you can do about it on New Year's itself (short of gripping it tighter), but you can prepare for the inevitable by installing a "Find My Phone" app before you go out. That way, if you find yourself phoneless the next day, you can find it once you've shaken off the hangover. Check out our favorite phone recovery tools to see your options. We recommend Find My iPhone for iOS users and Prey on Android, which gives you tons of options for finding your phone, even if it was stolen. Of course, if you forget to do this, you can always try previously mentioned Plan B to get your Android phone back after you've lost it.

Hail a Cab or Find a Hotel, Wherever You Are

How to Survive the Perils of New Year's EveIf you threw back one too many drinks at this year's party, you obviously shouldn't be driving home. You have a few options, from calling a cab to finding a hotel, and we've mentioned apps for both. HotelPal for iOS and Android will find where you are on a map and point out the nearest hotels and their prices. You can even reserve a room right from the app.

If you'd rather spend the night in your own bed, Cab4me for iOS and Android will find the nearest cab companies, let you call them, and even copy their numbers to the clipboard, so you can send them in a text message to your similarly drunk friends.

Lastly, many local AAA clubs have started a program called "Tipsy Tow" in the western US, where from 6pm-6am you can get a free ride home, and even tow your car back with you. It isn't available nationwide, but local clubs everywhere are starting similar programs, so you might have to call your local AAA and see if they have anything like that. Keep in mind they won't drive far; most clubs are noting a 5 or10 mile limit, but if you're partying nearby, it can be helpful.

Get a Traffic-Aware Navigation App to Avoid Drunk Drivers

How to Survive the Perils of New Year's EveEven if you're sober, that doesn't mean the roads are safe. While we'd recommend staying off the roads entirely, if you absolutely must drive home, get a navigation app with live traffic updating so you can stay out of the busy areas. Android users already have Google Maps on their phone, which should do just fine, but both iOS and Android users should also check out Waze, our favorite navigation app. It'll keep you up to date on traffic, accidents, and police cars (not that you should have any reason to avoid them), so you can stay out of the more dangerous areas.

Get Rid of That Hangover on January 1st

Sadly, the pain of New Year's Eve doesn't end when the night is over. The best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink so much, but if you didn't prepare yourself ahead of time, we've gone over the best and worst hangover cures for your education. In short: drink water, eat breakfast, and try to stay away from coffee, more alcohol, and painkillers like you may have been taught.

New Year's Eve can be a hotbed of stress if you aren't careful, but with a bit of preparation beforehand, you should be able to keep yourself safe and worry-free all weekend long. If you've got any of your own New Year's tips, share them with us in the comments, and be sure to check out last year's roundup of the best New Year's party apps, too.

FSU picks off Notre Dame in Champs Sports Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The day before his team took the field for its Champs Sports Bowl matchup with Notre Dame, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher acknowledged that he had higher hopes for his team than how they ended up in 2011.

Loaded with talent and expectations in the preseason, the No. 25 Seminoles squandered early season opportunities against ranked foes and fizzled again late in the year to end any path back to the Bowl Championship Series.

Thursday night's 18-14 win over Notre Dame in front of a sellout crowd at Florida's Citrus Bowl might not have been the national stage FSU expected to be on this season, but how it won the game could be proof it is finally making progress.

The Seminoles rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit and used a pair of touchdown passes by E.J. Manuel and two field goals from Dustin Hopkins to earn their fourth straight bowl win and second under Fisher.

"I'm proud to coach this football team," Fisher said. "... We've had a lot of trials and tribulations...But that team has special character about it."

FSU receiver Rashad Greene, who caught one of Manuel's touchdown passes, was selected the game's MVP.

"We had a very good finish," Manuel said. "We play for each other, not individual stats and performance. We just beat Notre Dame. We're going to feel good for months."

The Seminoles had just 18 yards of total offense in the first half. They finished with just 290, including going 3 for 14 on third down, and got an efficient night from Manuel. He played behind a young offensive line, but was 20 for 31 passing for 249 yards.

Injuries forced the Seminoles to start four freshman on their line and they gave up five sacks, but their defense picked off Notre Dame quarterbacks Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix three times and also had four sacks.

Notre Dame shuffled between Rees and Hendrix throughout the game, but both struggled. They were a combined 19 for 35 and 187 yards passing.

FSU scored on all four of its red zone chances.

The Irish also were without their biggest offensive weapon late, with receiver Michael Floyd being forced to the sideline following a third quarter touchdown catch with what coach Brian Kelly described afterward was an "upper body injury."

He returned to the game, but was a non-factor.

"It started in South Florida," said Kelly of the Irish's recurring theme of turnovers and missed opportunities. "And it continued to shoot itself throughout the entire year. We know what we need to do. We've already talked about it, and the players that are going to be back for the 2012 football season will be committed to getting that end done."

Junior linebacker Manti Te'o, who led Notre Dame with 13 tackles and got in on a sack Thursday, said fatigue was not a factor in the Irish not being able to maintain pressure on Manuel in the fourth quarter.

"They made their corrections and we just, as a defense, we just needed to get to the quarterback and we knew what E.J. could do back there when he had time...So that is something that we have to look at.

"We have a long time to prepare for next year, and when that time comes, that doesn't happen again."

After some stagnant offense on both sides in the first half, FSU trailed 14-0 early in the third quarter before finding some momentum through the air.

The Seminoles closed the gap to 14-9 with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Manuel to Bert Reed to open the fourth quarter, but failed on their 2-point conversion attempt.

They took the lead just 1:32 later after Nigel Bradham intercepted a Hendrix pass inside the Notre Dame 20 to set up an 18-yard touchdown catch by Greene to make it 15-14 with just over 13 minutes to play following another failed 2-point try.

The Seminoles added their second field goal of the game a series later.

Notre Dame punted on its next possession, but pinned FSU inside its own 5 and forced a quick three-and-out.

A poor punt by the Seminoles and a facemask penalty on the return gave the Irish the ball on the FSU 28 with 3:56 to play, but Rees was picked off in the end zone with 2:48 left and FSU was able run out most of the remaining time.

Notre Dame took a 14-0 lead on its opening drive of the second half by capping a nine-play, 62-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rees to Floyd. Floyd fought Seminoles cornerback Greg Reid for the ball on to play, juggling it multiple times before finally getting his hands around it.

Reid stayed down on the turf after the play and left the game with concussion symptoms.

FSU bounced right back with a 77-yard kickoff return by Lamarcus Joyner, but Notre Dame's fifth sack of the night on Manuel helped force the Seminoles to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Hopkins.

Safety Terrance Brooks, who had a late interception to help seal the win, said belief in themselves is the biggest thing they will carry into next season.

"Just go out there and do it," he said. "You know you've got it in you. We went out there and read our keys and got the job done."

China gold demand robust amid falling prices

``Gold prices in China have eased in recent months, tracking a similar trend in the overseas market. International gold prices slumped 20 percent to around 1,600 U.S. dollars per ounce. And correspondingly, retail prices of gold in Beijing have declined three times this month. It's spurred gold investors into a shopping frenzy... Figures from the World Gold Council show, China overtook India in the third quarter as the largest gold jewellery market. ''

Police name Texas Christmas shooting suspect (Reuters)

GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) ? Dressed in a Santa suit, Aziz Yazdanapah showed up at his estranged wife's home near Dallas during a Christmas celebration with her sister's family, and killed everyone before turning the gun on himself, police believe.

The seven bodies were discovered strewn in the living room area of the Grapevine apartment, amid opened presents and near a Christmas tree.

Police identified the dead on Tuesday as two families connected through a pair of sisters.

Suspected shooter Aziz Yazdanpanah, 58, had been estranged from his wife and two teenage children when they moved out of the family's upscale home in nearby Colleyville earlier this year.

His wife, Fatemeh Rahmati, 56, who was a licensed manicurist at a local salon, as well as their daughter, Nona Yazdanpanah, 19, and their son, Ali Yazdanpanah, 14, were also killed.

In the other family, who were visiting Rahmati's apartment on Christmas morning, were her sister, Zohreh Rahmaty, 58, Hossein Zarei, 59, and daughter Sahra Zarei, 22.

"Aziz is the one that was dressed in the Santa suit, and whom we believe ... to be the shooter at this time," Grapevine Police Lieutenant Todd Dearing told Reuters late on Tuesday.

"It was a family incident, they were all related by marriage or blood," he added.

A memorial organized by Nona Yazdanpanah's best friend is scheduled to take place at Parr Park in Grapevine on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Yazdanpanah's family, Iranian immigrants who had settled in the Dallas-Fort Worth area decades ago, had been fighting foreclosure and had declared bankruptcy on their home, a 3,000-square foot house built in 1990 and recently valued near $350,000, according to public records.

Neighbors said that while bankruptcy and foreclosure proceedings moved through the courts, Yazdanpanah had continued to live in the home on Sycamore Court in Colleyville, which borders Grapevine, known for its upscale suburban lifestyle and situated just a few miles away from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

He was a friendly man who loved his children, neighbors said.

"They were very good neighbors," said Fred Ditmars, who lived across the street from the family for more than four years. "Quiet but very nice."

Ditmars said Yazdanpanah would watch his house when he and his family were away.

The killings rocked the quiet, festive Dallas suburb dubbed the "Christmas Capital of Texas" and known more for its tourism, Christmas season events, festivals and vineyards than for violence. It was the worst outburst of gun violence in the history of the town, which hadn't seen a homicide since June 2010.

The dead were found by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency call, authorities said.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sergeant Robert Eberling of the Grapevine police department, who called it a "gruesome crime scene."

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

China tests 500 kmph super high-speed train

BEIJING | Tue Dec 27, 2011 2:27pm EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - China launched a super-rapid test train over the weekend which is capable of travelling 500 kilometers per hour, state media said on Monday, as the country moves ahead with its railway ambitions despite serious problems on its high-speed network.

The train, made by a subsidiary of CSR Corp Ltd, China's largest train maker, is designed to resemble an ancient Chinese sword, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

It "will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations," it quoted train expert Shen Zhiyun as saying.

But future Chinese trains will not necessarily run at such high speeds, CSR chairman Zhao Xiaogang told the Beijing Morning News.

"We aims to ensure the safety of trains operation," he said.

China's railway industry has had a tough year, highlighted by a collision between two high-speed trains in July which killed at least 40 people. Construction of new high-speed trains in China has since been a near halt.

In February, the railways minister, Liu Zhijun, a key figure behind the boom in the sector, was dismissed over corruption charges that have not yet been tried in court.

California (7-5) vs. Texas (7-5) (ET)

GAME NOTES: This year's Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl features two storied programs as the California Golden Bears of the Pac 12 and the Texas Longhorns of the Big 12 will square off at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Jeff Tedford is the winningest coach in Cal football history and led his squad to a 7-5 overall record in 2011. The Golden Bears had big wins over Utah and Arizona State and took Stanford to the wire in a 31-28 battle. California won three of its last to finish 4-5 in the new look Pac 12 Conference.

Tedford is 1-1 in Holiday Bowls with the Golden Bears, who are 10-9-1 all-time in postseason play. California's last bowl game appearance came in the 2009 Poinsetta Bowl, a 37-27 loss to Utah, snapping a four-game bowl win streak for the Golden Bears.

Texas had a good season by most standards, but it was a letdown due to the high expectations Mack Brown has established since taking over in Austin in 1998. Texas is happy to be playing a postseason game after last year snapped an 18-year streak of being invited to the bowl season. During his tenure, the Longhorns set a record with nine straight seasons of 10 wins or more, including winning the 2005 BCS National Championship.

This marks the fifth all-time meeting between these two teams on the gridiron. Texas has won all four previous matchups, with the last one coming way back in 1970.

This will not be the first Holiday Bowl appearance for Brown and Texas, as his team played in the postseason matchup in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2007. Brown is 2-2 in Holiday Bowls. Texas is 25-22-2 in bowl games overall, with its last one being a 37-21 loss to Alabama for the 2010 BCS Championship.

California's late season burst can be attributed to the development of its offensive stars Zach Maynard and Isi Sofele. Tedford commented on Maynard's progression

"He is a first-year player in our program. I really felt like if you look at the last half of the season and took the UCLA game out of it he completed close to 69 percent of his passes with 159 passing efficiency. He played really, really well and didn't turn the football over. I think it was key for him the manage the game and we got our run game going which really helped us finish the year strong".

Maynard threw for 763 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception in his last four games. He did throw three or more interceptions in two games this season, but seems to have grasped the offense better with experience. Maynard's top target this year was his brother Keenan Allen. The sophomore wideout finished the regular season with 1,261 yards and six receiving touchdowns. Allen's 7.4 catches per game ties for 12th in the nation. The duo will have his its work cut out as it faces the Big 12's top passing defense.

Sofele is the key component of Cal's attack. The junior tailback rushed for 1,270 yards and nine touchdowns on 232 carries in the regular season. Sofele is a workhorse as he has carried the ball over 20 times in each of his last four games. California's balanced attack gives it the 37th best offense in the nation with an average of 418.7 total yards of offense per game.

Despite playing in the Pac 12 with the likes of Oregon and Stanford, the Golden Bears are ranked 26th in the nation in total defense (339.4 yards allowed per game). Tedford's defense is very aggressive and ranks 17th in sacks (2.67 per game) and fifth in tackles for loss (7.67 per game). Cal's defense is led by the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Mychal Kendricks, all-conference second-team selection Trevor Guyton, and team captain D.J. Holt.

The Longhorns' offense is decent with averages of 404.0 yards of total offense per game and 28.7 ppg. The offense's key players are all very young, however. Case McCoy, younger brother of Texas alum Colt McCoy, emerged as the team's starting quarterback late in the year. McCoy set career highs in all of the following categories in the regular season finale against Baylor as he completed 24-of-39 pass attempts for 356 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. David Ash could see some time under center as both young quarterbacks continue to develop.

The Longhorn's top rusher Malcolm Brown missed the team's last game. The freshman star gained 707 yards on the ground despite missing three games. Joe Bergeron, also a freshman, reeled off back to back 100-yard performances in the middle of the year, but missed the last two games with injury. Although banged up, Brown and Bergeron have been practicing and are expected to split the carries against the Golden Bears' stifling rush defense.

Mike Davis is the team's top receiving option as he racked up 609 yards on 45 catches so far in his sophomore season. Freshman wideout Jaxon Shipley submitted his second 100-plus yard receiving performance of the year against Baylor with 121 yards on four catches.

The Longhorn defenders experienced a learning curve under first-year defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Cornerback Carrington Byndom spoke about the team's progression during the course of the year

"I think we have come a long way. Definitely in the beginning of spring, it was a little difficult with trying to learn a new system. He put in his time with it during our 13 or 15 practices in the spring, and then in our two-a- days we had to learn and pick up the system. As the season went on, I think everyone started to buy in and started to see the concepts of the defense."

Diaz did a tremendous job as his defense is tops in the Big 12 with 315.3 yards of total offense allowed per game (15th nationally) and ranks first against the run and the pass. The aggressive gameplan has resulted in three players with double-figure stops for losses - end Jackson Jeffcoat (14), linebacker Emmanuel Acho (13.5), and end Alex Okafor (12.5). Acho leads the team with 102 total tackles and was named to the 2011 All-Big 12 First-Team.

While California seemed to click as the season went on, Texas dealt with injuries that took a toll on its late season run. With a few weeks rest, Texas should be fresh. The Longhorns will win this one with exceptional defense and a strong freshmen tandem at tailback.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas 24, California 20

Arkansas Shows Greatest Gain in Ranking of Most Valuable College Football Programs

Chris Smith
Forbes.com

Read the source article

College football fans have to wait until January 9 for the BCS Championship Game to decide this season?s college football champion, but no game is needed to determine this year?s money winner: the University of Texas Longhorns have once again topped our ranking of College Football?s Most Valuable Teams, with a value of $129 million.

Texas? total value is driven largely by a football profit of $71 million last season, up from $65 million in 2009. Texas football generated $96 million in revenue, $36 million of which came from ticket sales. Another $30 million was comprised of contributions tied to amenity seating like club seats and luxury suites. The Longhorns also benefited from $10 million worth of sponsorship deals, with Coca-Cola, Nike and PepsiCo?s Gatorade giving a combined $2 million last year.

The biggest change since 2009 belongs to eighth-ranked University of Arkansas, whose football program climbed 59% in value over the past two years. Several key factors influenced this growth. The first is that Arkansas played in the Sugar Bowl last year, securing the SEC an $18 million payout. Arkansas also added another revenue stream in the form of the ?Southwest Classic? rivalry game with Texas A&M. The century-old rivalry was reintroduced two seasons ago after an 18-year hiatus and has generated additional revenue for both teams. Finally, Arkansas increased ticket prices by $10 for SEC games and introduced a new seating equity plan that increased contribution levels for premium seating. The new seating plan is reported to have brought in an additional $6.5 million.

But SEC rival Louisiana State University was the conference?s most valuable team, rising three spots to No. 4 on our list. LSU is also a great example of how college football programs generate immense value in surrounding communities. Adam Knapp, the President and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce, has seen the effects firsthand. He estimates that upwards of 150,000 people flock to the area on days of home games. The influx of fans generated nearly $60 million in additional spending last year. One local business that thrived off of local enthusiasm for LSU football was Tiger District, a custom T-shirt shop opened by Jared Loftus. His success in Baton Rouge allowed him to sell his store and create College District,? an online network of school-specific stores. College District has already grossed nearly $1 million this season, thanks in large part to the now-famed Honey Badger T-shirt.

Report details quake damage to Washington Monument

Friday December 23, 2011

WASHINGTON -- The earthquake-damaged Washington Monument has extensive cracking and chipped stones near its peak that left it highly vulnerable to rainfall, and inspectors found cracks and loose stones along the entire length of the 555-foot structure, according to a report released Thursday by the National Park Service.

The report was prepared by the engineering firm whose employees rappelled down the sides of the monument in September to inspect the damage. It offers the most detailed portrait yet of damage to the 127-year-old monument, which has been closed to visitors since a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the nation?s capital on Aug. 23.

The report does not estimate how long repairs would take or how much they would cost. The federal spending bill approved last week allocates $7.5 million to fix the monument, with the understanding that the National Park Service will raise an equal amount through private donations.

The repairs recommended by the report include reinforcing the cracks with stainless steel plates and filling them with sealant; replacing as many loose pieces of marble as possible and shoring them up with steel anchors or mortar; and cleaning and re-sealing all joints in the top portion of the monument to keep water out.

The report also recommends a seismic study to gauge the monument?s vulnerability to future earthquakes.

While the monument remains structurally sound, the cracks left it

so exposed that after rainstorms, "a substantial amount of standing water collects on the floors of the display and observation levels," the report found.

The inspection found six cracks that extend through the full thickness of the marble panels that form the exterior of the monument?s pyramidion, the uppermost portion of the obelisk where it begins narrowing to a point. Cracks and chipped or loose stones, found all along the structure, were more concentrated at the 450-foot mark and above.

The largest piece of stone to become dislodged was in the interior of the monument and weighed more than 200 pounds.

The corners of the pyramidion, which are topped by metal lightning rods, sustained particularly complex damage, and the entire lightning protection apparatus will need to be removed so that portions can be replaced before it is reinstalled, the report says.

There is no timetable for repairing and reopening the monument. The park service plans to solicit bids for the work, and it?s not clear whether the monument could reopen before repairs have concluded.

Construction began on the monument in 1848 and, after an interruption during the Civil War, it was completed in 1884. It remains the tallest structure in Washington and was the world?s tallest manmade structure until it was eclipsed by the Eiffel Tower.

Teargas fired at Chinese protesters in Haimen

Villagers protest in Haimen, China

Villages gather to protest in Haimen. Riot police fired teargas in an attempt to end the demonstrations, now running into their fourth day. Photograph: AP

Chinese riot police have fired teargas to break up a protest against a planned power station, while a state TV station showed confessions by two detained activists in an attempt to get other protesters off the streets.

Footage from Hong Kong's Cable TV showed police firing several rounds of teargas in Haimen town in the southern province of Guangdong, forcing hundreds of people to flee covering their mouths and noses with their hands.

Hours later, a local TV station carried interviews with two detained protesters, a man named Li and a woman, Yung. Sitting behind bars with their heads bowed and handcuffs in full view, the two took turns to confess. "It was wrong to surround the government and block the highway," Li said, with his eyes lowered.

"I do not know the law. If I knew, I will not block the expressway. If I could have understood this, I wouldn't have been so brash," Yung said, her voice shaking.

In an obvious attempt to end the demonstrations now running into their fourth day, the Shantou TV station also lined up several Chinese legal experts and quoted them as saying that such actions carried a maximum penalty of five years in jail, and urging protesters to surrender.

The protests in Haimen, a coastal town of about 120,000 people under the jurisdiction of Shantou city, intensified this week as people in Wukan village, about 80 miles further along the coast, called off a 10-day blockade of their village in protest against what they said was a land grab by officials.

Protests in China have become relatively common over issues such as corruption, pollution, wages, and land grabs that local officials justify in the name of development. People have become increasingly unwilling to accept the relentless speed of urbanisation and industrialisation and the impact on the environment and health.

Chinese experts put the number of "mass incidents", as such protests are known, at about 90,000 a year in recent years. While Communist party rule is not directly threatened by such incidents of unrest, officials fear they could coalesce into broader, more organised challenges to their power.

Residents of Haimen took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against plans to build a coal-fired power plant after what they complain has been years of air and water pollution from existing power plants in the town.

"Villagers complained that the current power plant had led to a rise in the number of cancer patients, the deterioration of the environment, and a drop in fishing hauls," state Xinhua news agency reported on Friday. "The Shantou city government announced Tuesday evening, shortly after the protest, that the project would be suspended. Some village residents said that they knew nothing about the announcement, while others said they had no trust in the suspension decision."

Hong Kong newspapers reported earlier that the villagers wanted the project to be scrapped altogether and have pledged to keep up their action if police did not release detained protesters. China's state news agency, Xinhua, had reported that police had detained five people for vandalism on Wednesday evening.

Lack of snow means business for golf courses

BOISE -- Local ski areas continue to fret over their lack of snow. But while that's made for a slow skiing season so far, it's meant an extended season (and additional revenue) for another popular activity in the area.

Mark Bryant is one of 30-some golfers who played a round at Warm Springs on Wednesday.

"Some of these guys are out here everyday," said Bryant.

He's one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, who is still playing golf all over Southern Idaho, which is quite something, considering it's officially winter in the Northwest.

Bryant says he's been out five times this year, but he knows other golfers who have been on the course pretty much every day in December.

"It's keeping us busy," said Peter Nichenko, Head Golf Pro at Warm Springs. "We've seen our fair share of golfers."

There's one obvious big reason that golf courses in the area are seeing good business, especially when compared to last year. It's the same reason that ski areas are seeing no business, a complete and total lack of snow.

"It's not good for the ski resorts, but people have to do something in the winter," said Nichenko. "So, we're seeing some extended golf."

"We've been golfing all winter long," said Nichenko. "There's no snow on the mountains, so all the guys who are the skiers, are out here continuing to golf. They're a little unhappy with that, but we've been having a wonderful time."

With no snow on the ground, once the morning frost melts, these courses are open for business. And business is pretty good. It's not what you'd see in the middle of summer, but it's good. That's especially true when compared to last year when most courses were closed by snow in November.

Now, course managers are reporting as many as ten times as much business this December than normal. That means a lot more green for businesses that are usually hibernating this time of year.

"It's good. We get a little bit of revenue," said Nichenko. "It keeps us busy. Better than sitting around, twirling our thumbs."

Course managers say they'll need to see snow sticking to the greens to actually close up shop. Right now, they're not seeing it. There's a possibility they just won't close, staying open until spring, the unofficial start of the next season.

Stranded Ariz. student, Texas family rescued

(AP) ? An Arizona State University student says she had nothing to eat but two candy bars while her car was stuck in the snow for nine days in a remote area of east-central Arizona.

A state away, a Texas family found themselves struggling to breathe after nearly two days in their SUV, which was buried in a snowdrift on a rural New Mexico highway.

The frigid ordeals ended with separate rescues Wednesday for Lauren Weinberg and the Higgins family. Authorities said all were recovering after being taken to hospitals. Weinberg was released from Flagstaff Medical Center early Thursday.

The 23-year-old undergraduate at Arizona State University was seen leaving her mother's home in Phoenix on Dec. 11, and later said her car became stuck in the snow a day later.

Coconino County sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair said Weinberg was driving around with no specific destination when she traveled south from Winslow toward the Mogollon Rim ? a prominent line of cliffs that divides the state's high country from the desert.

The paved road turned into a dirt road. Weinberg stopped her vehicle at a fence line and when she attempted to move a gate she found that it was stuck in the snow, according to Blair. Soon, her car was stuck as well.

Weinberg had two candy bars with her and told a sheriff's deputy that she put snow in a water bottle and placed it atop the sedan she was driving so it would melt, Blair said. She wasn't prepared for the winter conditions and did not have a heavy coat or blankets, Blair said.

Two U.S. Forest Service employees on snowmobiles found her about 45 miles southeast of Winslow while they were checking if gates on forest roads were closed.

"I am so thankful to be alive and warm," Weinberg said through a spokeswoman at the Flagstaff Medical Center, where she was taken. "Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers, because they worked. There were times I was afraid but mostly I had faith I would be found."

Other than being cold, hungry and thirsty, Weinberg was in good condition, lucid and speaking coherently, Blair said.

Weather forecasters and authorities said her survival was remarkable, given the more than 2 feet of snow in the area and temperatures that dipped to near zero some of the nights. Blair said Weinberg had a cellphone but the battery was dead.

"It's pretty harrowing that she'd been there since the 12th in an area that's totally foreign to her," he said. "We're certainly very happy that we found her, and we found her alive."

Phoenix police told local TV station KTVK that Weinberg bought items at convenience stores in Chandler, Superior and Show Low on Dec. 11 and in Holbrook the following day, but there was no other sign of her since then.

In New Mexico, rescuers had to dig through 4 feet of ice and snow to free the Higgins family, whose red GMC Yukon got stuck on U.S. 56 near Springer when a blizzard moved through the area Monday, state police said.

Rescuers found David and Yvonne Higgins and their 5-year-old daughter, Hannah, clinging to each other and lethargic early Wednesday. The family was recovering at Miners Colfax Medical Center in Raton.

David Higgins told The Associated Press he and his wife both have pneumonia but his daughter is fine.

The family, who had left their home near League City, Texas, on Sunday for a ski trip in northern New Mexico, started to hit bad weather soon after they crossed into New Mexico on Monday afternoon. Eventually, visibility dropped to zero.

"It was white. You couldn't even see the yellow line," David said.

The snow stopped the family in their tracks. David Higgins tried backing up and then driving forward again. He made some progress but then the back end slipped around and the vehicle started to slide down an embankment.

He was able to keep the car running for a couple of hours, but when he wanted to clear the exhaust pipe, his door was blocked.

"By 9 or 10 Monday night, I realized there was solid snow outside my window. I tried to shove my arm through the top of the window," the 48-year-old father said. "I pushed as hard as I could. My arm went about 16 inches, and there was still snow."

The Higginses had plenty of water to drink, sandwiches, chips and Chex mix. But as the hours passed, it seems as if they were working harder to breathe inside the buried SUV.

"We weren't sure of it, but we think we were running out of air. That was spooky," he said.

Higgins was able to reach his brother in Texas by cellphone and the distress call was relayed to state police, which launched a search Tuesday evening.

The National Guard was called out, along with state transportation workers. State highway trucks with plows and rescuers in four-wheel-drive vehicles pushed through heavy snow and drifts as high as 10 feet as teams probed the snow looking for the family's SUV.

One of the rescuers hit the hood, and the digging started.

"They pulled us up and out of it," he said. "The rescuer took pictures and it looked like a rabbit hole. We were 3 to 4 feet above the vehicle."

"Tired and whooped" is how Higgins described his family after their ordeal.

Whether they would make it home in time for Christmas was still unclear.

Higgins had a simple message for travelers this winter: Throw a case of water and a sleeping bag in the car.

"It will be there if you need it," he said.

The rescues came after an elderly New Mexico couple took a wrong turn early this month and got stranded on a remote forest road in eastern Arizona. They survived two winter storms over five days before the woman collapsed and died as they tried to hike to safety.

New Report Breaks Down Post Tornado Spending in Joplin

Reported by: Gretchen Bolander

Joplin, MO- "Construction and home improvement is up about 42% and motor vehicles is up about 38%. So that pretty well helps us determine that a lot of this is replacing the lost items from the tornado." That, according to City of Joplin Finance Director Leslie Jones. A new report shows the City of Joplin collected nearly $2.8 million on construction and home improvement alone in Fiscal Year 2011. Add in car sales - that another $2.2 million.

Jones added, "Furniture stores are up 21% - people replacing their furniture." There's a category for discount stores - an increase for more than 10%. And malls - up 5% in 2011 compared to 2010. "Restaurants up 10% visitors here. Every one of these you can absolutely tie to the tornado, whether it's visitors being here or people rebuilding and replacing items."

But there are some exceptions to the increase. Entertainment outlets saw a slight drop. Grocery stores are down nearly 10 percent... and the development district at 17th and Range Line saw a 34% decrease. Said, Jones, "1717 obviously was gone for several months of 2011. So that explains why that was down. And grocery stores, we obviously lost a grocery store in the tornado."

Overall, it adds up to an extra $2 million in sales tax revenue for the City of Joplin. Compare that to 2010, when the city saw a 2.9% decrease, along with the fact the city has much bigger bills to pay after the tornado.

Accused Army document leaker Manning faces hearing (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? An American Army intelligence analyst accused of giving hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents to WikiLeaks for public disclosure made his first court appearance on Friday to face charges including aiding the enemy, which could send him to prison for life.

Private First Class Bradley Manning, accused of supplying WikiLeaks with massive dumps of classified U.S. documents, went on trial at a courthouse at the Fort Meade military base in Maryland.

Security was tight as media and some protesters gathered at the base, which also serves as the home of the secretive intelligence-gathering National Security Agency.

WikiLeaks eventually posted online hundreds of thousands of sensitive diplomatic cables that exposed the candid views of U.S. officials and their allies.

It also released about half a million classified U.S. files on the Iraq and Afghan wars -- actions that Washington said jeopardized national security.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday called the WikiLeaks dump a "a very unfortunate and damaging action ... that put at risk individuals and relationships."

Prosecutors aim to show there is sufficient evidence to bring Manning to trial at a general court martial on 22 criminal charges.

If convicted of all counts, Manning would face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment, reduction in rank to the lowest enlisted pay grade, forfeiture of all pay and allowances and a dishonorable discharge, the Army said in a statement.

The most serious charge, aiding the enemy, is a capital crime that carries the death penalty, but the Army has indicated it does not plan to seek that punishment.

For much of the time since his detention beginning in May 2010 in Iraq, Manning was held on a charge of improperly obtaining a classified gunsight video that showed a 2007 helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in Iraq, including two Reuters journalists. The video was released publicly by WikiLeaks.

The additional charges were brought against Manning last spring.

HEARING BEFORE BIRTHDAY

The proceedings begin one day before Manning, a Crescent, Oklahoma, native, celebrates his 24th birthday.

Members of the Bradley Manning Support Network plan demonstrations on Friday outside Fort Meade and a march outside the base on Saturday, joined by protesters from the Occupy movement's encampments in Washington and on Wall Street, the organizations said.

Daniel Ellsberg, who released the controversial history of the Vietnam War known as the Pentagon Papers in 1971, is expected to address the protesters on Saturday along with former military veterans and diplomats, Manning supporters said in an email.

Manning defenders see him as a hero. Some view the release of the cables, with their frank discussion of corruption in some countries, as having contributed to the Arab Spring protests in the Middle East.

"He stands accused of doing the right thing," said Zack Pesavento, who was at Fort Meade on Friday morning.

Manning was caught after he bragged about his activities to former hacker Adrian Lamo, who turned him in to authorities, Lamo told Reuters.

Lamo said Manning, who worked as an intelligence analyst for the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade in Iraq, told him he would come into work with music on a recordable CD labeled "something like 'Lady Gaga." He would then erase the music and download data from the military's Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, known as SIPRNet.

Manning said he "listened and lip-synced to Lady Gaga's song 'Telephone' while exfiltrating possibly the largest data spillage in (A)merican history," according to a transcript of his Internet chats with Lamo, the details of which were confirmed by Lamo to Reuters and which were published by Wired Magazine.

In his Internet chats with Lamo, Manning appears to acknowledged giving materials to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He wrote to Lamo: "I'm a high profile source ... and I've developed a relationship with Assange."

For his part, Assange is in Britain fighting extradition to Sweden over accusations of rape and sexual assault made by two female former WikiLeaks volunteers in August 2010.

Leverkusen expects Ballack to leave

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:28 a.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) -Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller says Michael Ballack will probably leave the club next year.

Voeller told Sky television on Thursday, "At the moment the tendency is for him to only go on (at Leverkusen) until summer."

The 35-year-old Ballack said last month that he did not expect to renew his Leverkusen contract which expires in the offseason.

Ballack indicated he would play for another one of two years "at a high level" elsewhere.

German media has linked the former Germany captain with a move to the MLS.

Leverkusen is in Friday's Champions League draw for the last 16, and is eight points behind Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich.

Sprint reveals it has Carrier IQ on 26 million phones (Digital Trends)

Sprint Samsung Conquer 4G

Responding to questions from U.S. Senator Al Franken regarding its use of the controversial Carrier IQ software, US mobile operator Sprint has revealed (PDF) that it has installed Carrier IQ on more than 26 million handset ? but insists its use of the software is limited solely to diagnostic data and does not constitute a breach of users? privacy. Furthermore, Sprint says that it only has Carrier IQ active on about 5 percent of the devices with the software at any given time. A particular ?research request? from Sprint personnel may result in Carrier IQ being tasks with data collection on about 30,000 devices. Sprint also emphasized that all the information collected by Carrier IQ is transmitted in encrypted form to Carrier IQ, then anonymized.

?Sprint recognizes that it is fair to ask whether the data collected using Carrier IQ software goes beyond ?technical diagnostics information,? and Sprint?s answer is unequivocally no,? Sprint?s VP for government affairs Vonya McCann wrote in the response.

Sprint did not identify which devices it offers have the Carrier IQ software.

Carrier IQ responded to Senator Franken?s request with a 19-page document outlining how its software works and how it can be used to assist mobile providers in operating their networks.

AT&T has also responded to Senator Franken?s request for information (PDF); AT&T claims to have been using Carrier IQ since March of 2011, with a total of about 900,000 devices currently using the software. Of those, 575,000 are collecting ?wireless and service performance information? for AT&T. Handsets with Carrier IQ include Pantech Pursuit II, Pantech Breeze III, Motorola Atrix 2, and the Motorola Bravo ? the HTC Vivid, LG Nitro, and Samsung Skyrocket also have Carrier IQ embedded but not (yet) activated. As with Sprint, AT&T insists the data it collects is related solely to network performance and diagnostics and does not represent a breach of privacy.

Samsung and HTC have also responded to Franken?s letter. Samsung says it has installed Carrier IQ on as many as 25 million devices at the request of wireless operators. HTC says it began installing Carrier IQ on selected handsets in 2009 at Sprint?s request, and so far has put the software on about 6.3 million devices. Both Samsung and HTC say they have no knowledge of or involvement with whatever data is collected by the carriers using the software.

Franken is expecting responses from Motorola and T-Mobile by December 20.

Despite the rapid clarifications and statements from a number of companies implicated in the Carrier IQ scandal, Franken so far remains unimpressed.

?I appreciate the responses I received, but I?m still very troubled by what?s going on,? said Sen. Franken in a statement Thursday. ?People have a fundamental right to control their private information. After reading the companies? responses, I?m still concerned that this right is not being respected. The average user of any device equipped with Carrier IQ software has no way of knowing that this software is running, what information it is getting, and who it is giving it to-and that?s a problem.?

Republican Ryan backs new bipartisan Medicare plan (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Republican lawmaker Paul Ryan, who caused an uproar this year by proposing to privatize Medicare, unveiled a new bipartisan approach on Thursday to cut costs in the government's $525 billion health plan for the elderly.

Ryan, chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, joined Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon in a plan that would retain Medicare's popular fee-for-service program and allow private insurers to compete for more of its 48 million beneficiaries.

The plan would provide financial support allowing seniors to select insurance through a new, regulated exchange intended to foster competition and reduce costs.

Wyden and Ryan said they were raising the idea at the start of the 2012 election campaign as a way for Republicans and Democrats to find common ground to reform a popular program that has long been seen as politically untouchable.

"This is about trying to get out in front of this issue before it's just another high-decibel shouting match," Wyden said in an interview with Reuters.

"We're outlining a bipartisan approach that would give us a chance to have what might be characterized as an adult conversation about Medicare," he said.

Ryan faced fierce criticism from senior citizen groups early in 2011 with a plan to convert the entire Medicare program into a "premium support" system to help senior citizens buy private insurance.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich initially castigated the so-called Ryan plan as right-wing social engineering. Analysts said the public reaction undercut support for Republicans among senior citizens, a critical base of voters who had helped the party take control of the House from Democrats in 2010.

The new Wyden-Ryan plan would retain the premium support idea so that Medicare funds would help beneficiaries purchase private coverage vetted by federal health officials and sold through the exchange.

Insurers like UnitedHealth Group and Humana Inc already provide care for millions of beneficiaries through Medicare Advantage plans sponsored by the government.

The lawmakers said their plan would also impose a battery of consumer protection measures to ensure comprehensive and effective coverage.

"Our plan wouldn't merely ensure that American retirees have more health-care options than they have today. By allowing private plans to compete directly with traditional Medicare, our plan would also spur a wave of innovation to lower healthcare costs," Wyden and Ryan wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece published on Thursday.

Beginning in 2022, the plan would allow Medicare spending to rise no higher than the growth in U.S. gross domestic product, plus 1 percent, they said. It would require Congress to cover any additional increases with measures including lower payments to healthcare providers and premium increases for higher-income beneficiaries.

Wyden said there were no plans to introduce legislation in the foreseeable future.

Rumblefish accesses 3.5 million songs with CD Baby deal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? YouTube users now have a lot more music to choose from when creating a soundtrack for their videos.

Rumblefish, a company that specializes in licensing music for social media, announced Tuesday a new partnership with CD Baby, the world's largest indie music store and online music distributor.

The result is that both consumers and businesses can add music from CD Baby's catalog to their online videos, presentations and games.

That catalog includes about 3.5 million tracks from artists like Joe Purdy and Macklemore.

"We're here to help our artists connect with their fans through every avenue available," CD Baby president Brian Felsen said in a statement. "Fans can add soundtracks to their videos and slideshows, and they can share them on their favorite sites like YouTube and Vimeo."

This partnership comes less than a month after Rumblefish struck deal with APM Music, which has a vast catalog of music from films, television shows and advertisements. That opened up the music from "Avatar" and "Mad Men" to non-professional makers of YouTube videos.
