Nokia confirms Windows Phone 7.8 coming to the UK today, prices Lumia 620 at ?149.99

Nokia 620 priced at 14999 in the UK, arrives on February 6th

Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia's update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2's pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that'll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It's available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.

You'll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUK and Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it'll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we've got some bad news -- Nokia has said it's not likely to happen.

Propping open the door to the blood brain barrier

Feb. 1, 2013 ? The treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases can be particularly challenging because many of the therapeutic agents such as recombinant proteins and gene medicines are not easily transported across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Focused ultrasound can be used to "open the door" of the blood brain barrier.

However, finding a way to "prop the door open" to allow therapeutics to reach diseased tissue without damaging normal brain tissue is the focus of a new study by a team of researchers at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University presenting at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society (BPS), held Feb. 2-6, 2013, in Philadelphia, Pa.

The group is investigating the feasibility of using heparin, a common anticoagulant, to enhance the delivery of therapeutic macromolecules using ultrasound into the brain. Heparin could be employed to increase treatment efficacy in patients with different types of CNS diseases under the guidance of medical imaging system providing new hope in these challenging cases. Initial results show that heparin does have the potential to optimize therapeutic delivery with ultrasound, acting as a "doorstop," allowing drugs to better permeate the BBB and enhancing treatment success.

"A higher acoustic pressure and longer sonication, and/or a higher dose of microbubbles may increase the delivery of drugs or tracers into the sonicated brain tissue," explains Kuo-Wei Lu, a member of the research team, "but side-effects, such as microhemorrhage, can also increase dramatically. The results of this study indicate that heparin may offer a safer way can to enhance the delivery of therapeutics to patients with CNS diseases."

With these encouraging results, the next step for the team is to develop a focused ultrasound system with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) guidance to establish suitable parameters needed for patient clinical trials. "Focused ultrasound sonication is a noninvasive technology capable of localized and transient BBB opening for the delivery of CNS therapeutics," Lu states. "We hope by developing suitable parameters and using chemical enhancers like heparin, this can be a valuable tool in the treatment of patients with CNS diseases, opening the door to better patient outcomes."

Best Home Location for making drinks:

Ideally centralise making all drinks next to a sink ? close to fridge & glassware for waste disposal and all other ingredients ? waste motions are the enemy of a good liquid chef, so minimize any unnecessary movements and keep everything in close quarters and continue to make good drinks efficiently at home

Trick to making nice drinks & cocktails on efficiently is Preparation.
Once the prep has been done it becomes easy. Like cooking a stir fry!!

Bar Kit Requirements Home Kit if no proper cocktail Kit

25 or 50ml Measure - Egg Cup holder ? Old Camera Spool holder ?

Muddler - Rolling pin

Punch Bowl - Large Sauce pan or fruit bowl / with Soup Ladle

Cocktail Shaker - One Large Jar (One lid with holes ? One without)

Pour Mat ? Just use a dish towel to catch any drips

Cubed Ice ?
To make cocktails well! Always get three times the amount of ice you think you need. Ice is critical to making drinks, so always make sure and get loads. It melts and you use ice constantly when making cocktail so make sure you don?t run out or things will go pear shaped.

Crushed Ice ?

Double bag your cubed bag ice and bash it with rolling pin or muddler till crushed

Prostate cancer treatments can be worse than illness, Vanderbilt ...

Living with prostate cancer may be better than trying to fight it.

New research by Vanderbilt University reveals that men experience widespread complications after undergoing either surgery or radiation therapy. Most men are rendered impotent within two years regardless of which procedure they choose, and more than a third who opt for radiation have problems controlling bowel movements, according to the research published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine.

?The reality of it is both of these treatments cause a whole heck of a lot of side effects,? said Dr. David Penson, senior author of the article.

But not all prostate cancer patients require such aggressive intervention, Penson said, noting that a third or more have slow-growing tumors that can be closely monitored.

Video: Sen. Wicker met with Hagel, still expresses opposition

>>> following big breaking news. the tense back and forth within the last 30 minutes between senator lindsey graham and senate nominee chuck hagel . he was confronted with past remarks the former senator made that leaders on capitol hill are intimidated by the, quote, jewish lobby .

>> name one person in your opinion who's intimidated by the israeli lobby in the united states senate .

>> well, first --

>> name one.

>> i don't know.

>> well, why would you say it?

>> i didn't have in mind a specific person.

>> sir, do you agree it's provocative statement. i can't think of a more provocative thing to say about the relationship between the united states and israel and the senate or the congress than what you said. name one dumb thing we have been goaded in to do because of the pressure of the israeli or jewish lobby .

>> i have already stated that i regret the term nlg.

>> you said back then it makes us do dumb things. you can't name one senator intimidated. now give me one example of the dumb things we're pressured to do up here.

>> we were talking in that interview about the middle east . about positions. about israel .

>> now that exchange followed another faceoff earlier today with senator john mccain over the war in iraq .

>> will you please answer the question? will you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge would be the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since until nam? were you correct or incorrect? yes or no?

>> my reference --

>> are you -- the question is, were you right or wrong? that's a pretty straightforward question.

>> well --

>> i would like to answer whether you're right or wrong and then you're free to elaborate.

>> well, i'm not going to give you a yes or no answer on a lot of things.

>> let the record show he refused to answer the question. please go ahead.

>> well, if you would like me to explain why --

>> i actually would like an answer. yes or no.

>> well, i'm not going to give you a yes or no.

>> okay.

>> i think it's far more come placated than that.

>> senator mccain said hagel 's refusal to answer the question could play a role in whether he votes to confirm his fellow vietnam war . let me bring in a member of the armed services committee against hagel 's nomination. thank you, sir, for your time, i appreciate it, mr. wicker.

>> thank you. thank you for having me on the show.

>> let me first ask you, how do you measure or what is your opinion of chuck hagel 's performance so far?

>> well, i don't think it's going very well for senator hagel . you know, there's a telling part at the beginning of the hearing where it was mentioned that senator kerry, the newly confirmed secretary of state, came out of his committee on a unanimous basis. confirmed with only dissenting votes in the senate. i think it's very, very telling that although a number of us disagree with senator kerry on a number of issues, we have confidence in him to represent capably the united states view and, frankly, a lot of us served with senator hagel . i think the fact it's going to be close, there's hardly any republican support for him from people who worked with him and in caucuses with him and on committees with him. i think it speaks volumes about the level of confidence that we don't have about this individual to head really the number one national security job in the united states .

>> i want to get to the votes in a second. some of the number that is are out there. but i want to play your exchange with chuck hagel during this hearing today. your questioning of him regarding israel . let's play it please.

>> okay.

>> when you talked about the jewish lobby , were you talking about apack? were you talking about norpac in were you talking about christians united for israel ? and do you still believe that their success in this town is because of intimidation?

>> i have already said i regret referencing the jewish lobby . i should have said pro- israel lobby . i think it's the only time on the record that i've ever said that. now, you all have done a lot of work with my record and, yes, it is appropriate, by the way.

>> senator, is that answer acceptable to you?

>> well, he didn't say who he was referring to. we may be able to get to that. was he talking about apac? was he talking about the various christian organizations that deeply support israel ? we didn't get an answer to that. maybe we will later on.

>> are you a no? i know you said that before.

>> yes. i'm absolutely a no and there's nothing that's gone on today to counter what we all know. that you could not pick a united states senator from the last decade that has had more anti-israeli comments, that has had more troublesome votes or more troublesome positions or statements against the nation of israel . this vulnerable democracy in the middle east than chuck hagel . it's a stunning choice by a president obama from someone who says he's supportive of the jewish state .

>> you have thad cochran to vote for confirmation for el. first read says it puts it about 56. the question is, if all of the democrats support mr. hagel , do republicans really pursue a filibuster against their former colleague and the answer is, what?

>> well, the answer is that i would consider that but it's something that i would have to think long and hard about and not made a judgment about that so i cannot tell you how i would come down because the hearing isn't over. the follow-up questions on the record aren't over. but it is a very troublesome nomination for someone like me who really, really supports the right of this little country of israel to exist in such a hostile environment. as well as all of the problems that senator hagel has with regard, really, to the global leadership of the united states . i think it's -- he could not have picked a more troublesome, out of the mainstream nominee and i'm not alone. "the washington post " in an editorial early this year begged the president not to choose senator hagel as being totally out of the mainstream.

>> senator wicker, thank you for your time. i greatly appreciate it.

Chuck Hagel Faces His Biggest Critics Today

Thursday in Washington could see the most contentious confirmation hearing of Barack Obama's presidency, as former Senator Chuck Hagel fights for his chance to be the next Secretary of Defense.?At least seven of the 12 members on the Senate Armed Services Committee have expressed some reservations on Hagel's nomination and a few have stated outright that they plan to vote against him. That may not be enough to shut down his appointment, but it could lead to some fireworks today as the Republican committee members get their chance to challenge him directly. Unlike John Kerry, Hagel didn't make a lot of friends during his time in the Senate and will not get the benefit of a rubber-stamp coronation.

RELATED: Meet Chuck Hagel, Your 'Likely' New Secretary of Defense

So why do his haters want to keep Hagel?a brave enlisted man, a decorated veteran, and a former Senator like themselves?from running the Pentagon? Two reasons, really: Israel and Iran, two nations for which Hagel does not appear to share the appropriate level of concern.

RELATED: Five Best Friday Columns

For Israel, the problem is that?Hagel has in the past seemed indifferent, or worse, openly hostile to Israeli leaders and the "Jewish lobby," as he unfortunately referred to it supporters. With Iran, he hasn't been hostile enough, voting against sanctions several times as a Senator, and arguing that engagement with their?government?and "containment" of their nuclear program was the better course of action. Obviously, being insufficiently angry with Iran is another sign you don't care enough about?Israel, but the intertwined issue of how Chuck Hagel feels about our Friends and our Enemies will make up the bulk of the questioning.

RELATED: Obama Launches the Untouchable Hagel Defense

Another matter of concern will Hagel's opinions about the future of the military. He's complained in the past about the "bloated" Armed Forces, and may look to?shrink?the defense budget rather than expand it?an almost blasphemous idea in the Armed Services committee, which has never had any problem giving our army more money. You can also expect a lot of questions about his priorities for war planning: fast, nimble, and computer-heavy or big, loud, and powerfully destructive?

RELATED: The People Who Are Actually Saying They Oppose Chuck Hagel

It doesn't even really matter that Hagel's most?controversial comments happened years ago, or that Congress still controls his budget, or that not all Americans agree with the Republican approach to foreign policy. The hearing is as much about voicing official objections to the Obama administration's?behavior as it about taking down Chuck Hagel. And even if they can't find out Hagel's mind, maybe they can't learn something about the President's?

RELATED: Chuck Hagel: A Highly Controversial Nominee Almost Certain to Be Confirmed

?

Because Democrats control the Senate and therefore the committee (and even most opposition members are inclined to defer to the president on political appointees) the odds are slim that Hagel will not become the next Secretary of Defense. That doesn't mean that doesn't mean the Senators who will grill him today can't make the rest of his morning?and the next four years?very uncomfortable.

Microsoft Surface sales well below shipments, says iSuppli

Surface RT tablet.

(Credit: CNET)

Sales of Microsoft's first Surface tablet fell well short of the 1 million mark, while return rates were high, IHS iSuppli told CNET.

Shipments of the Surface RT device, which debuted last quarter, into the channel were about 1.25 million, but sales out of the channel "were significantly lower, maybe on the order of 55 to 60 percent of that figure," said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at iSuppli, citing the market research firm's estimates.

That would put sales in the range of between roughly 680,000 and 750,000 based on those percentages.

That kind of "sales out" percentage is not unusual, however, according to Alexander, adding that she has seen similar percentages with newly introduced Android devices.

And, needless to say, almost every manufacturer's sales-out figure pales against Apple's, the gold standard, where the percentage is typically in the mid to high 90 percent range or even 100 percent. Apple sold 22.9 million iPads in its most recent reported quarter.

And Alexander said she sees little evidence of continued production of the Microsoft RT device -- which runs a limited version of Windows 8 on top of an ARM processor -- in the first quarter because Microsoft is still trying to sell off inventory.

But that inventory carryover is also not unique to Microsoft. The Amazon Kindle Fire, when it was first introduced, had excess inventory that carried over into the following quarter. As a result, Amazon temporarily cut production, Alexander said.

Surface RT has other challenges, too. The return rate on the device was "very high," Alexander said. "If you put the high return rate together with low sell-through [sales out] rate, that's indicative of a problem," she said, adding, again, that the Kindle Fire initially had very high return rates and low sell-through.

Why the high return rates? "It seems to be linked in a lot of cases to a steep learning curve of the [Windows 8] OS -- which is not necessarily intuitive," she said.

And another problem possibly looms big this year. There is a "distinct lack of interest" from device makers in pursuing RT devices at the moment, she said.

For Microsoft partners the question is, "where is the win for us?" -- according to Alexander.

During last week's earnings conference call, Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein repeated a number of times that Surface contributed to revenue. "Certainly this quarter [Surface] was a contributing factor to revenue growth in the Windows business," Klein said.

During the call, Microsoft cited Surface as a part of non-OEM revenue that grew 40 percent.

Microsoft has not talked about sales figures. And the company would not provide a number when contacted.

Microsoft is about to bring out a second line of tablets, the Surface Pro, that runs the full version of Windows 8 on top of a mainstream Intel processor. Alexander says she sees more momentum industrywide for these kinds of devices.
