For people with heart conditions and other ailments that require monitoring, life can be complicated by constant hospital visits and time-consuming tests. But what if much of the testing done at hospitals could be conducted in the patient's home, office, or car?

Scientists foresee a time when medical monitoring devices are integrated seamlessly into the human body, able to track a patient's vital signs and transmit them to his doctors. But one major obstacle continues to hinder technologies like these: electronics are too rigid.

Researchers at the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, working with a team of scientists from the United States and abroad, have recently developed a design that allows electronics to bend and stretch to more than 200 percent their original size, four times greater than is possible with today's technology. The key is a combination of a porous polymer and liquid metal.

A paper about the findings, "Three-dimensional Nanonetworks for Giant Stretchability in Dielectrics and Conductors," was published June 26 in the journal Nature Communications.

"With current technology, electronics are able to stretch a small amount, but many potential applications require a device to stretch like a rubber band," said Yonggang Huang, Joseph Cummings Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, who conducted the research with partners at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea), Dalian University of Technology (China), and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "With that level of stretchability we could see medical devices integrated into the human body."

In the past five years, Huang and collaborators at the University of Illinois have developed electronics with about 50 percent stretchability, but this is not high enough for many applications.

One challenge facing these researchers has been overcoming a loss of conductivity in stretchable electronics. Circuits made from solid metals that are on the market today can survive a small amount of stretch, but their electrical conductivity plummets by 100 times when stretched. "This conductivity loss really defeats the point of stretchable electronics," Huang said.

Huang's team has found a way to overcome these challenges. First, they created a highly porous three-dimensional structure using a polymer material, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), that can stretch to three times its original size. Then they placed a liquid metal (EGaIn) inside the pores, allowing electricity to flow consistently even when the material is excessively stretched.

The result is a material that is both highly stretchable and extremely conductive.

"By combining a liquid metal in a porous polymer, we achieved 200 percent stretchability in a material that does not suffer from stretch," Huang said. "Once you achieve that technology, any electronic can behave like a rubber band."

The graduate student Shuodao Wang at Northwestern University is a co-author of the paper.

Islamists continue destroying Timbuktu heritage

(AP) ? Despite international condemnation, the radical Islamic faction controlling the northern Malian outpost of Timbuktu continued destroying the city's ancient tombs on Monday, laying waste to the city's five-hundred-year-old heritage.

The destruction began on Saturday, after the al-Qaida-linked faction Ansar Dine secured its hold on the three main towns in northern Mali, including Timbuktu. They descended on the tombs of the city's Sufi saints with axes and shovels, as well as automatic weapons, saying that they were idolatrous. Their destruction spree continued through Monday.

"This morning, the Islamists continued breaking the mausoleums. This is our patrimony, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO," said Aboubacrine Cisse, a resident of the town who slipped outside on Monday to witness the destruction. "They are continuing to destroy all the tombs of all the saints of Timbuktu, and our city counts 333 saints," he said.

The U.N. cultural agency has called for an immediate halt to the destruction of the sacred tombs. Irina Bokova, who heads the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, cited in a statement Saturday reports that the centuries-old mausoleums of Sidi Mahmoud, Sidi, Moctar and Alpha Moya had been destroyed. Meeting in St. Petersburg in Russia, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, last week placed the mausoleums on its list of sites in danger at the request of Mali's government.

And in Dakar, Senegal, on Sunday, Fatou Bensouda, prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, said that the destruction of the city's patrimony constitutes a "possible war crime," according to private radio station RFM.

Reached by telephone in an undisclosed location in northern Mali, a spokesman for the Islamic faction said that they do not recognize either the United Nations or the world court.

"The only tribunal we recognize is the divine court of Shariah," said one of Ansar Dine's spokesmen, Oumar Ould Hamaha.

"The destruction is a divine order," he said. "It's our Prophet who said that each time that someone builds something on top of a grave, it needs to be pulled back to the ground. We need to do this so that future generations don't get confused, and start venerating the saints as if they are God."

For years before the north of Mali became a base for an offshoot of al-Qaida, Timbuktu was a must-see for backpackers and package tour groups. Much of the city thrived on tourism, from young men who memorized the history of the tombs to act as tour guides to the numerous hotels and restaurants, nearly all of which are now shuttered.

Hamaha said he didn't care about the impact that their actions will have on tourism.

"We are against tourism. They foster debauchery," he said.

Feds propose $3.7M penalty for Mich. oil spill

(AP) ? Federal regulators proposed a $3.7 million civil penalty Monday against the Canadian owner of a pipeline that ruptured in 2010, dumping more than 800 million gallons of oil into a southwestern Michigan river.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said the penalty against Enbridge Inc. would be the largest it has imposed. The agency also said it was recommending 24 enforcement actions against the company, based in Calgary, Alberta.

"We will hold pipeline operators accountable if they do not follow proper safety procedures to protect the environment and local communities," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

A 30-inch pipeline extending from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario, ruptured July 25, 2010 in Calhoun County, about 60 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. Investigators found numerous violations of hazardous liquid pipeline safety regulations, including failure to follow procedures and operator qualification requirements, PHMSA said.

The rupture happened during a scheduled shutdown, the agency said.

"Despite control center alarms, there were several attempts to restart the line, resulting in more pressure that expelled more oil," it said in a news release.

More than 20,000 barrels had spilled by the time a local natural gas company employee informed Enbridge's control center about the spill the next day.

Enbridge has 30 days to respond. It could accept the agency's findings and pay the penalty or request a hearing before an administrative judge.

The agency is expected soon to issue a report on what caused the pipeline break.

LA's 'Teardrop Rapist,' wanted since 1996, may have struck again

By Stephanie Miranda, Antonio Castelan and Melissa Pamer, NBCLosAngeles.com

Police say?a man dubbed the "Teardrop Rapist," who is linked to at least 35 attacks on women in the southern Los Angeles area, may have struck again.

Since attacks began in 1996,?multiple composite sketches of the suspect show a changing face, but his mode of operation hasn?t changed, authorities said.

"He will approach them. He tries to make conversation with them. He'll pull out a weapon,? Los Angeles police Detective Jesse Alvarado said.

Investigators say the man strikes in the early morning hours, often before the sun comes up.?

The most recent attack happened 5:30 a.m. June 15 in southeast of downtown LA.?

A 29-year-old woman?was approached by a man who attempted to converse with her and then produced a handgun and forced her to walk into an alley where he attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

A?vehicle came into the alley and the suspect fled on foot.

"He is the type of person that will flee the minute he believes he may be seen by someone," Alvarado said.

Detectives said the sexual assaults have happened across a broad swath of?the city -- within six police divisions and in an unincorporated area. Many of the incidents have occured in South Los Angeles and Koreatown. ?

In 33 of the 35 cases, Latina women have been the victims. ?

In April, the Los Angeles Police Department released nine different sketches of men described by victims in similar attacks. Many of the sketches show one or two teardrop tattoos under one eye. ?

At that time, police said the most recent assault was in November 2011. The new incident has neighbors frightened. ?

"I feel scared especially since we have a lot of little kids on this block," says Margarita Martinez, a South Los Angeles resident. ?

Martinez lives only a block away from where the suspect is believed to have hit last.?Officers say the rapist has assaulted girls and women ranging from 14 to 41 years old. ?

"Maybe I'll carry a shank or pepper spray," Martinez said. ?

Detectives said the rapist is leaving behind DNA that has already linked him to?10 sexual assaults.?They are hopeful word of mouth will lead to a break in the case. ?

"This individual is known by someone in the community. It's going to take someone to say this does look like my neighbor," Alvarado said.
