Obama to seek more Alzheimer's research money

(AP) ? The Obama administration wants to spend just over half a billion dollars on Alzheimer's research next year, hoping to battle back against what could become the defining disease of the aging baby-boom generation.

Not all the spending must wait for approval from Congress: Under the plan being announced Tuesday, the National Institutes of Health will devote an extra $50 million to Alzheimer's research this year ? opening the possibility that at least one stalled study of a possible therapy might get to start soon.

"The science of Alzheimer's disease has reached a very interesting juncture," with promising new findings to pursue after years of false starts, NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins told The Associated Press. "We would love to be able to come up with a way of bringing forward an even larger amount of support."

The NIH currently spends $450 million a year on Alzheimer's research. In his budget proposal to be released next week, President Barack Obama will ask Congress for $80 million in new money for Alzheimer's research next year, Collins said.

The move is part of the administration's development of the first National Alzheimer's Plan, a congressionally-ordered strategy that will combine research toward better dementia treatments with steps to help overwhelmed families to better cope today. In addition to biomedical research, the administration said it will propose spending $26 million for other goals of the still-to-be-finalized plan, including caregiver support.

"We can't wait to act," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement. "Reducing the burden of Alzheimer's disease on patients and their families is an urgent national priority."

Patient advocates long have said the nation's spending on Alzheimer's research is far too little considering the disease's coming toll. At a meeting last month some of the government's Alzheimer's advisers said it could take a research investment of as much as $2 billion a year to make a real impact.

"Our country cannot afford not to make these commitments," Alzheimer's Association President Harry Johns told that meeting.

More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's or related dementias, and, barring a medical breakthrough, that number is expected to more than double by 2050. Today, medical and nursing home bills for Alzheimer's total about $180 billion a year, a tab expected to reach $1 trillion.

For comparison, the government spends nearly $3 billion on AIDS research; about 1.1 million Americans are living with the AIDS virus.

Given the nation's fiscal problems, it's not clear what the chances are in Congress for a boost in Alzheimer's funding.

But for this year, Collins said Alzheimer's is such a priority that the NIH will shift some of its budget from other research areas to eke out an extra $50 million right away.

Among his examples: Some cutting-edge gene-mapping will be directed to concentrate on uncovering the genetics of Alzheimer's, including what protects the brains of some people in dementia-prone families. Collins also said he will determine whether the extra money is enough to start some clinical trials that otherwise would have to wait, including one to test whether an intranasal form of insulin might reach and protect the brain cells of people with early dementia symptoms.

6.8 earthquake shakes central Philippines; 1 dead

A strong earthquake struck the central Philippines on Monday, killing a child, destroying buildings, shattering windows and triggering a local tsunami alert that sent residents fleeing.

The 6.8-magnitude quake hit in a narrow strait just off Negros Island. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued the tsunami alert for central islands, saying the quake could trigger a 3-foot (1-meter) wave along the island's eastern coast as well as west of the country's second-largest city, Cebu.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a wider regional warning.

The epicenter was closest to Tayasan, a coastal town of about 32,000 people flanked by mountains in Negros Oriental province. A child there died when a concrete fence of a house collapsed, said Benito Ramos, head of the Office of Civil Defense.

"So far one dead, but we could not yet account for the damage to buildings," Tayasan police officer Alfred Vicente Silvosa told The Associated Press by phone. He said there were still aftershocks "so we are outside, at the town plaza. We cannot inspect buildings yet because it's dangerous."

"I felt the building shaking, so I rushed out of the building. Our computers, shelves, plates, the cupboards, water dispenser all fell," he said.

A three-story office building collapsed in La Libertad town in Negros Oriental but there were no immediate reports of casualties. Occupants of the building ran out.

Five bamboo and wooden cottages were washed out from a La Libertad beach resort by huge waves, but there were no reports of injuries, police Superintendent Ernesto Tagle told The AP.

Negros Oriental police chief Edward Carranza said that the temblor damaged many houses in Guihulngan, a city of about 180,000 people, and he ordered his men to help displaced residents find shelter. A public market collapsed and a bridge in the city was damaged.

People rushed out of schools, malls and offices during the quake, which hit at 11:49 a.m. (3:49 a.m. GMT). Officials in some areas suspended work and canceled classes. Power and telecommunications were knocked out in several places.

Carranza said policemen rushed out of his building when the quake struck. "All my personnel ran out fearing our building would collapse," he said.

"Now it's shaking again," he said as an aftershock hit. "My keychain is dancing."

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 44 miles (72 kilometers) north of Dumaguete city on Negros and hit at a depth of 29 miles (46 kilometers). The area is about 400 miles (650 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Manila.

President Benigno Aquino III's spokesman said authorities did not force people to evacuate but implored those along the shore to be vigilant. The coast guard grounded all vessels while the tsunami alert was in effect.

A mall in San Carlos city in neighboring Negros Occidental province was damaged when its windows were shattered by the shaking, Ramos said. The quake was also felt in Cebu, where it lasted about 30 seconds.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. A 7.7-magnitude quake killed nearly 2,000 people in Luzon in 1990.

The 9 most surprising facts about the Facebook IPO (Yahoo! News)

Facebook's SEC filing reveals a treasure trove of information on the social media behemoth

It's official:?Facebook, the world's most famous internet company, is about to go public. In a move expected to net the?social networking giant a cool $5 billion, Facebook shares will be available for purchase this May under the ticker symbol FB.

It's a?little surprising that Facebook is "only" raising $5 billion ? previous suggestions put the figure as high as?$10 billion.?Nevertheless, that will still make?Facebook's IPO the largest in?internet history; significantly bigger than?Google's. And while Facebook is raising $5 billion, the company itself could be worth as much as $100 billion.

But while those facts may be surprising, they're hardly the?most surprising aspects of the Facebook IPO.?Because Facebook had to?file a prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission ? essentially, a public advertisement explaining why you should buy Facebook stock ? we've learned a heck of a lot about America's newest public company over the past few hours:

Facebook is the largest social network by a huge margin1. People are?very friendly with each other
Facebook is bringing the world closer together. That's not just marketing mumbo jumbo, it's a cold hard fact: Since the company's 2004 launch, a total of 100 billion friendships have been established. That's just over 14 friends for every man, woman, and child alive on Earth. (No word yet on how many of them are?fewer than six degrees of separation from?Footloose star Kevin Bacon.)

2. One out of every eight people in the world use Facebook monthly
In the prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, it was revealed that Facebook averaged 845 million active users for the month of December 2011. That means that one out of every eight people?in the world are actively posting on Facebook. And well over half of those people ? 485 million ? are so hooked on social networking that they use Facebook every day.

3. If your parents aren't on Facebook yet, they probably will be soon
If you thought Facebook was done growing as a social networking platform, you'd be dead wrong. On December 31, 2009, Facebook had 185 million active daily users. One year later, that number was up to 317 million ? an increase of 71%. Active users swelled another 51% in 2011. Certainly, the social media giant can't keep up that pace forever. After all, if it did, every single human being in the world would be an active daily user on the site before the end of the decade.

4. Virtual farms are serious business
Farmville and Frontierville aren't just fun and games ? they're Facebook cash cows. Their maker,?Zynga, was responsible for 12% ($445 million) of Facebook's revenue in 2011. And the percentage of revenue Facebook gets from Zynga ? mostly in the form of the 30% cut Facebook gets from all in-game transactions ? is slowly growing. The relationship is so important to the future of Facebook that the company included a statement in its SEC filing saying its fortunes are inexorably tied with that of the social gaming kingpin. Facebook's contract with Zynga expires in 2015.

Facebook users have a lot to say, and they don't hold back5. If there's one thing people like, it's hitting their Like button
Think having someone post?1,000,000 replies to a single comment is impressive? You might need to think again ? a total of?2.7 billion likes and comments are posted to Facebook each and every day. That's 31,250 likes and comments each and every?second.

6. Existing Facebook employees are about to get the deal of the century
We don't know yet what the price of a single share of Facebook will be yet ? after all, that's for the free market to decide. But Forbes is already estimating that a share of Facebook could easily head north of $100 per share. That'd be good news for Facebook investors and employees who will be exercising stock options to buy 138 million shares of stock. Their price? An average of $0.83 per share. That's a tidy 12,000% return on their investment in mere seconds.

7. More people use their phones than their computers to check in to Facebook
It appears that the?Facebook app is becoming an absolute juggernaut. Of the 845 million people who checked in to Facebook last month, 425 million ? just over half ??did so with their mobile phones. This presents itself as a major future revenue stream for the company ? advertisements are absolutely prolific on the main internet site, but largely absent from the mobile version. That could soon change.

8. The value of your Facebook profile: $4.39
According to the Facebook IPO filing, the company raked in a massive $3.71 billion in revenue last year. When you consider that Facebook now has 845 million active monthly users, that means your presence on the social networking site was worth approximately $4.39 to the company. Just don't expect them to write you a check for that amount any time soon.

9. The Facebook IPO crashed the SEC website
Without a doubt, excitement over the Facebook IPO is running high. But is it really so exciting that even the federal government can't handle it? That appears to be the case: Enough people tried to view Facebook's SEC filing that they crashed the?regulatory agency's website. Perhaps the SEC would like to talk about renting some extra?server space at Facebook's new Oregon facility?

Where the Lines Overlap Needs a Best Friend!!

. . . .no, you did not read the topic title wrong; the roleplay 'Where the Lines Overlap' is in current need of a dedicated roleplayer to take up the role of 'The Best Friend.' Posting has already begun, and the unfortunate curse of inactivity has forced us to seek out someone to take up this slot! We are not far along as of yet, and everyone in the roleplay is friendly and dedicated to their writing. So, anyone who would express interest in joining and filling this slot would be welcomed warmly.

The roleplay is co-GMed by myself, Beta Type Jakuri, and the wonderful Winds of Fate.

So, what is 'Where the Lines Overlap' about?

Well, it is a high school roleplay; but wait! Don't let the 'high school' factor spoil it for you, while the roleplay is rather open-ended and a character driven roleplay, it's very open and is ripe for the makings of a great roleplay. What sets this roleplay apart from other high school roleplays, is the fact that the story and premise is about the connections between the characters, the relationships and bonds that exist now, ones that will develop, and ones that will change as the roleplay progresses. Drama, comedy, love and hate, all of these things will come to pass as we go along, and with the plethora of interesting characters, it will not be dull at all.

Now, what does the Best Friend slot entail exactly?

I'll give you the pre-written description,

'The Best-Friend -This is the best friend to the Roommate, he?s kind of a leech in a way with how he tails after the Roommate, but he means well. He genuinely likes the Roommate for who he is and not just because he?s popular. He does have a secret though; he has had a crush on the Girlfriend for a long time, but for the sake of his friendship with the Roommate, he does not act on these feelings. Still though, when it comes down to it, he will act as a guardian and protect the Girlfriend with everything he has. He is also good friends with the Crazed Fangirl, and he rooms with the Homosexual, who is the Reverse-Trap?s best friend.'

Why should you join?

There are many reasons for that, but to put it simply, it's because 'Where the Lines Overlap' will not be a dull roleplay. The things that come to pass relies entirely upon the minds of the roleplayers themselves, and while there will be predetermined events that happen that effects the whole cast of characters, those things will be matters such as school-events and other happenings like this. The things that come to pass between the characters, those are matters left to the writers.

As long as if falls in the realm of reality, and can happen in high school, it can happen here, as long as it isn't too violent or overly sexualized! Given this, who knows what will happen? It will be exciting!

Well, if you gotten to this point of this thread, I hope it means that your interest has been piqued~ If it has, then follow the link below to the roleplay and begin creating your character~
